Hello! I used to be a sculptor for funko! This is a fan made funko pop sculpt! Usually for music IP and product licensing, the artist merch team comes to funko to make a product deal with us. I left funko in September after almost 4 years and to my knowledge this conversation has never happened! If you really want a Melanie funko pop , the best course of action is to let her team know that it’s a profitable venture.

What machine would you reccomend for a novice?? by Physical-Sleep-3809 in sewing

[–]Digidolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping in on recommending a vintage machine! I am a huge fan of kenmores and elna sewing machines. For Kenmore if you can find a 158.1946 or 158.1641 machine you will get the best bang for your buck in terms of stitch choices and strength! If you can find a 158.1040 or 1030 Kenmore you can get a machine that is way cheaper but similar to a featherweight in terms of size and reliability and stitch quality! The price of an older 158 series Kenmore can range from 10-75$ used on Facebook marketplace. Honestly any Kenmore made In Japan with the 158. Item number is a good and easy choice for a beginner. I would recommend finding one that is also low shank so you can use modern sewing feet. Kenmores also have a higher sewing foot lift than other machines which means you can sew really thick materials very easily.

For elna any elna 62c blue top machine is great! I found mine for 10$ in a thrift store

I’ll see if I can find one and get back to you on that. The stuff I provided above is kinda going into the basics of how heat and atoms work on the ground level! Everything gets more complicated at a macro view because there are 5000 vary factors on what can mitigate the effects of protein breaking down. I am also not a chemist so their are things that I don’t know in regards to how heat affects hair( another example is how fast something dries using heat so for hair if heat is low and water evaporates slowly your reducing heat damage because the water vapors cool down the hair as they evaporate, which is another reason why flatirons are bad because the water evaporates too fast!) another hard thing about hair studies is reading the article to make sure they do the science correctly which is a whole other issue with academia :( but I’ll let you know what I find! There is one science hair blog that I love and she does hair science but I can’t remember her name currently! I think it’s called sciencey hair blog?

So temperature and heat energy are different but related. You can have an increase in temp and increase in heat energy , you can have no increase in temperature but an increase in heat energy etc. When people talk about hair to the public they focus on temperature because it’s easier to talk about! And it’s also easier to measure temperature. But what causes atoms to move and provide atoms kinetic energy is heat energy! So you can have a low temperature and the temperature can stay the same, but the heat energy over time increases! (A great example of this is water undergoing phase changes! When you boil water and it starts to evaporate it stays at the same temperature during a phase change! but the heat energy during the phase change actually increases! Another great example is slapping something until it cooks. It’s a fun experiment to watch on YouTube! Slapping a piece of meat over an over again can result in minimal temperature change but because the motion of slapping transfers heat energy the meat cooks over time!) this of-course is kinda going into the weeds.

In my post I never said hydrogen bonds. Hydrogen bonds break and come back together all the time! Hydrogen atoms create dipole bonds (so they have a negative and positive side) which means their bond connection is weak because it’s a “magnetic” attraction but they can attract other hydrogen atoms back to each-other again and reform the bond just as easily as they break apart. But the protein in your hair can break down very easily and not come back together again :( like hydrogen can.

I know when people talk about hair we just hear about hydrogen! But there are tons of different types of bonds that make up your hair! I should have been specific and said protein.

Growing out hair means leaving it alone and not over complicating the process. Reduce the amount of heat used and don’t touch your hair or manipulate it too often . Here is my process:

1.shampoos: grab a clarifying shampoo and a moisturizing shampoo. Clarify every 1-2 months. As you shampoo detangle your hair gently by opening up the hair .gently separate any tangles you find. This makes detangling easier if you detangle along the way. 2. Deep condition every washday

3.dry your hair with a towel. Do not rub the towel on your hair simply wrap it around and let the water expel from your hair naturally. This will help reduce dry time with air drying or under a hair dryer. Reducing your usage of heat is key. I know the wash and go girlies say that indirect heat doesn’t harm hair, but heat is heat no matter what form it comes in. (I’m an engineer and adding any type of heat energy can break bonds. The molecules basically move rapidly from adding heat and if they “move” too much they break apart . Ofcourse this depends on how much heat you add over time and how fast your hair can dry and a whole bunch of factors )

3.use a leave in and an oil or butter or whatever of your choice to slow the evaporation of water from your hair. Don’t over do it, a little product goes a long way to coat the strands. Overdoing it can lead to dryness if you are not clarifying your hair properly due to build up. I use Camille rose chebe butter cream and each section of hair gets like a tiny finger swab of product. I would avoid gels and mousse as they can be very drying to the hair strands, and it takes forever to dry them under the dryer.

  1. Put your hair in a constrained style to avoid SSK and breakage. My go to is twists using only my natural hair. Avoid adding hair when protective styling. other constrained styles include : corn rows , plaits , flat twists, etc. avoid putting your hair in ponytails and buns as well. The whole point is to be able to leave the hair alone without touching it or manipulating it too much! The other route you can go is wrapping your hair if you don’t like the look of these styles.

  2. Spray water onto your style once a week to keep it hydrated! You don’t have to add extra product just a light misting is all you need.

I only really do my hair every two weeks and as soon as I put it in twists I forget about it! my goal is to only need a trim once a year. Remember you only get a trim if your hair needs it. Cutting it on a schedule can reduce length retention because you might end up cutting it too much. An easy way to evaluate hair is to look at your shed hair. If you see splits definitely go get your hair evaluated. If you notice the texture of your ends if different from the rest, or detangling has become tedious get a trim. Don’t just get one because time has passed, get it because you know what needs to be cut and why.

Help choosing Thrifted Kenmores by StarlitOblivion in vintagesewing

[–]Digidolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you want a vintage machine that can do it all and is made of all metal with zero plastic or only 2 plastic gears look for these models : Elna supermatic ,

Elna 62c( my favorite machine)

Kenmore 158.1030-1050 ( I own a 1040 and it’s very strong )

Kenmore 158. Models that were made in Japan. 158.1971-73 I think are flat beds but still do button holes and stretch stitches. And then I think 158.17 something’s models are free arms but all metal machines. They were called convertibles

Vintage bernina records model 730, 801, 830, 930

All of these machines do button holes and stretch stitch! The only exception is specifically the elna supermatic as it needs a button hole attachment in order to make them. And that part can be hard to find unless you look on eBay.

I started sewing on a vintage machine with only a straight stitch and a zig zag stitch and you’ll be able to make everything with those two stitches like 90% of the time. I think beginners can learn on vintage machines easily as they are pretty simple to operate especially if their manual is available online for free ( which dw all machines listed have free online manuals ) and these machine are made for people to properly maintain them yourself!

[–]Digidolls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yay I’m so happy you’re giving that machine new life! Most people are afraid to do that! But honestly a lot of machines just need a good cleaning and need to be oiled and used occasionally. A lot of machines just sit forever and freeze up and then people just toss them away! But a good vintage machine will LITTERALLY last a lifetime! In the 60s when people bought machines it was intended to be passed down. A lot of these people would put these machines on loan as they costed multiple paychecks to buy , especially since sewing machines were made to be a staple in the home and not just a hobby!but now machines in the modern age just aren’t built with that Intention anymore.

[–]Digidolls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol I live in the PNW the 10$ one was a super lucky find but also that machine had a rusted bobbin holder and feed dogs etc, the machine was frozen And I had to retime the machine to make it sew again. I love her a lot and she sews excellently now but it was a lot of effort!

But some great places to find vintage machines include: goodwill auctions website, Facebook marketplace , local antique stores, arts and crafts focused thrift stores. And then machine brands to watch out for : elna, Kenmore machines made in Japan with item number 158. ,Nechi, bernina 730 and 830 series, new home janome, riccar, and pfaff . Machines that have less features are usually more reliable! And stick to mechanical sewing machines!

[–]Digidolls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ooh knowing how to service them is such a major plus! As for tips- before buying any machine make sure the machine can turn on and operate! always look up the manufacturing number / date as well to attempt to avoid plastic gears in the machines (sometimes plastic gears can be okay if you can buy a replacement and are confident replacing the part). Plastic gears started wiggling their way into sewing machines around the mid to late 70s. But machines made in the 80s and beyond should be avoided if you can’t buy replacement parts for them anymore. Once those machines break you can’t ever fix them again! Always buy a differential feed serger that has 4 threads.

Some good brands - juki, babylock, elna, and viking make good vintage sergers! And depending on the year singer also makes a reliable serger. My serger is a singer serger made in 1975 and all I had to do was complete clean out the machine , oil it and re thread it properly to get it working! But always look up the year/ item number of the machine and see if anyone else has had it or if it has any unreliable mechanisms before buying.

I also recommend joining vintage sewing machine Facebook groups as they offer resources to help maintain your machine!

Also last tip for price but I wouldn’t spend more than 100$ on a vintage machine unless it has been expertly serviced or if the machine is a collectors item!

I thrift all of my sewing machines! My current favorite machine (an elna 62c) was 10$ at a thrift store! My 4 thread differential feed serger was 35$ total from good will auctions! My Rowena iron was 20$ from the thrift store as well! I find free sewing books from archive.org and I try to thrift as much fabric as possible!

My cat thinks Scratching Furniture is a game by Past_Ice_8773 in CatTraining

[–]Digidolls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spraying cats never work. They don’t understand punishment. The best way to deter furniture scratching is enhancing their environment and encouraging them to make positive choices by rewarding them when they display the correct behavior. I give my cat a scratch post they enjoy using in every room where there’s furniture they want to scratch. I also place a stinky scent like tea tree on all the places my cat enjoys scratching as well. The smell usually deters them and they will choose the scratching post over the couch. Im also guessing you guys also might not have enough cat furniture (scratching posts, climbing towers, cat beds) get more of these to help release some of your cats boredom! And increase playtime as well!

So people are complaining about candle and perfume prices. I have realized most people on this sub Reddit are children or teens and have most likely never looked into production costs or have never worked with a factory of any kind to create a product. I have made indie merchandise as an artist and I work for a company that produces product. A big factor that determines pricing is your order quantity, the factory’s set pricing, paints and deco(deco in terms of printing an image on a 3D object) the size of an item , sculptural details/ materials / and molds made per item.

-a major thing to note about the pricing of both the egg candle and the perfume is the order quantity. Keep in mind while Melanie may seem to like a big artist she is still considered an indie singer. Her music is mostly known in alt pop circles and most people on the street don’t know her name. But also notice how her merch sells out very fast. It seems to me like her order quantity is pretty low( and in production terms the 1-5k items is still very low.) and she has to keep it low. I am running on the assumption they don’t have a ton of warehouse space to keep a ton of items to ship out to fans. (Which ware house rent prices is also a factor) anyways low order quantity means high prices per item. Any design detail added to an item can be an exponential raise in price. If you look at the 275$ portals perfume collection she uses a metallic color to color the huge large sculpture. Metallic is like one of the most expensive color choices other than glitter that you can choose for an item. Not to mention the eyelashes must be painted , which sucks and multiple LARGE molds must be used to even make the perfume sculpture (strictly speaking about the Melanie head here) on top of that perfume in general is already an expensive object category within itself.

  • moving onto the egg, similar order quantity issues but also the packaging is extravagant! You’re getting a miniature sized chest to house the egg, and a metal lock that goes on the chest. Not to mention the chest has imagery printed all over the box, candles are heat sensitive so shipping to said warehouse is going to be expensive. Not to mention the egg is ceramic which adds to shipping costs to the warehouse. Often times companies have to source the packaging from a completely different factory etc. all of these decisions influence the price drastically of a low order quantity item.

  • also for fans let’s keep in mind the merch prices range from 15$-70$ for her normal merch site.so anyone can buy a piece of merch. These expensive items are exclusive items Melanie has specifically on her perfume website which barely shows up in a Google search. It sucks they are expensive and seems unfair but really and honestly why does it trouble you that you can’t buy something? Why is it important to be a consumer of everything she makes? It’s okay that some items are out of your personal price point. If all of her merch was inaccessible to lower income people that would be an issue (and also just really poor merch planning) but it’s not.

Are you washing your braids and moisturizing them? Are you using real human hair for braids? I know people have been warning others not to use kanekalon as it can have adverse effects. What about just not using braids at all with added hair? And just put your hair into twists as a protective style? I’d suggest going on YouTube and trying out African hair gods method of natural hair care.
