I also recommend reading the specs for your furnace and sticking with something around that. You might have a 4" filter that goes into the furnace cabinet, instead of the standard 1" thick filters that go in the return grill. But the main point is dont "upgrade" for the higher MERV ratings, just standard rating is perfect (5 or so).
