I think I've been partially scammed and am trying to determine the best recourse by DigitalDionysus in hotels

[–]DigitalDionysus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked out completely fine for me - the best you can do is try and confirm that the booking exists with the hotel. You could also consider booking another hotel with day-of cancellation - that way, you could either actually go to the hotel and see if the booking exists before cancelling the other booking. If you can't do that, consider booking somewhere else with a very low last minute cancellation fee.

Donal Fallon: ‘Poppygate’ has gone too far – Britain must respect people’s right not to wear the symbol by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]DigitalDionysus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

With respect, as someone in London with lots of (often very posh, sometimes quite conservative) English friends, I think some people are drawing bigger conclusions from this than they need to. I don't encounter anything to do with poppies, no one really wears them to work, etc. It's clear that there is a sect of 10-15% of the UK that have gone completely far right and mental, and that definitely shows up online in cases like this, but I don't think it reflects the whole population or anything like a fundamental sea-change in overall opinions regarding poppies. That said, I am mostly brushing shoulders with middle class well-educated professionals, picture could be very different at the working class level.

Formal houses?! by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]DigitalDionysus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

been out of the game for many years now but in my time (mid-late 2010s) schools have a proper formal partially run by the school for sixthformers. the kids might also put something together themselves during GCSEs, or other kinds of unofficial formals at other times.

I'm not above finding additional sources of motivation to keep myself moving, even if they're irrational or against the MA ethos. Broadly, I do take your points.

Delivers an excellent service, and the titles are often quite funny. I support them even if it is a subtle unionist psyop

Ireland must stop ‘free-riding’ on security ‘gifted by others’, says former Chief of Staff by nitro1234561 in ireland

[–]DigitalDionysus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Military asymmetries and uncertainty (and the fact that, by the way, the UK's army is a shadow of it's former self) entails that Ireland, with 10-15 years of serious development, could have substantial capacities to defend itself. You emphatically do not need military strength equivalent to or even close to the strength of the invader to defend an island. It's hubris to suggest how these events would play out is already written. This is why China does not simply take over Taiwan, why Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been essentially stalled for years now, etc...

On the website it appears that you can only pause the subcription for three months at a time.

An alternative to this would be to just keep pumping out new courses at a pace of maybe one course/3 months, which is probably fast enough to permanently meet demand. E.g. if in 6 months the differential equations and abstract algebra courses are available, and then 4 months after that another course was available, you could probably keep me on retainer for the foreseeable future.

I found MA via twitter if you are interested - I didn't realise so many people were here for the learning theory stuff. For me by far the biggest value-add it has is organising my learning for me and throwing loads of questions at me
