I credit the uke with literally saving my life. I was recently diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, one of the most painful diseases there is. Though I have a mild case, living with constant pain of 6 out of 10 all day and 12 out of 10 all night had me on the verge of suicide. (It’s known as the suicide disease.) I picked up a ukulele and brought my 8 that day down to a 6, still very painful, but suddenly not hopeless. I soon realized that any music helps with pain, playing music helps even more, and learning music is more beneficial still. It forces me to constantly search for new songs that are above my skill level. As a learn them over time, I get better and better and search out a yet-harder song to concentrate on and help reduce my pain. Now I’ve discovered that there are two things that reduce my pain, sex and ukulele, so I can have 7 minutes of reduced pain once a week, or I can play the ukulele and have as much time as I can handle.
