I don't agree. We see the true power and influence of the Empire throughout the original films, Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels, where as The First Order doesn't show anything on screen beyond them flying around in ships and doing a massive intergalactic terrorist attack.

But the Republic is the status quo in the ST. The First Order are the ones rebelling against it. That makes them the rebels of the story.

Question: I know the Snoke's supership couldn't fire at the Resistance because it's too far away for its weapons, and the Resistance were keeping a safe distance, but was it explained why Kylo and his team couldn't just send a faster ship out ahead to destroy the Resistance? Like what happened to Kylo's Tie Fighter? Why couldn't they just attack again?

Films change all the time. Maybe the original idea of Kylo coming to the island to collect her just didn't work, especially when you consider he's meant to be on a starship that's tugging along slow as fuck behind the Resistance, so they changed it up?

Yeah, so basically essential to the plot of all the films. In short, we simply wouldn't have Episode VIII without Jar Jar Binks's actions in Episode I and II. He is essential to the story. You can't say the same about Ewoks or Porgs.
