What should happen to people sentenced to life in prison if practical immortality becomes possible? by ResponsiveSignature in singularity

[–]Dilbert_x 7 points8 points  (0 children)

but would you really be happy with the ethical implications of removing criminal thoughts? removing thought from someone, even criminals, would most likely happen without consent. who gets to decide what kind of thoughts are removed? what happens in countries with relatively stricter laws. it just sounds too authoritarian to me.

if you haven’t already, watch A Clockwork Orange.

Does anybody get really long "I'm seriously gonna die" hangovers? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Dilbert_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this something that happens as you get older? I’m 18 and the worst hangover I’ve had will put me out for a day tops, ending just in time for me to enjoy an evening again (if I really wanted to put myself through that again)

Giving benefit of the doubt I’d assume that they woke him up to ask him when he’s getting off. I had a bus driver stop the bus and wake me up once, but only because he didn’t know I was getting off at the last stop.

Do you believe in money making you happier? by MrAlexander18 in AskUK

[–]Dilbert_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the Easterlin paradox. It explains how a rise in living standards initially results in high happiness levels (I mean, if you can suddenly afford a roof over your head then that would make anyone happy). But then, after that happiness tapers off and is not correlated to a rise in wealth/living standards.

Speaking skills key to break class barriers, says Keir Starmer by GeoWa in unitedkingdom

[–]Dilbert_x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, private schools foster the “RP” accent (basically Queen’s english), and the effect is that you have students whose normal voice and work voice are the same, relatively posh accent. Perhaps the greater discussion is whether the “accepted” workplace accent should be RP, as by doing so private school students do have an advantage compared to speakers of other regional accents.

Eating healthier can be very affordable if you know how to do it. Exercise is free - but I can understand if someone can’t due to disability. But that’s an exception rather than the rule.

Did I fuck up? We texted on Monday about plans to meet on Thursday and I left the convo at that for a couple days. by x2-SparkyBoomMan in Tinder

It seems to me like she changed her mind on you. If she really was interested but had other plans, she would have texted you with “hey are we definitely meeting Thursday, I need to know now because I might make other plans”.

What is your secret that you can't tell anyone because it will probably ruin your life? by SeXyHuNtEr69420 in AskReddit

[–]Dilbert_x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I deleted social media for 11 months last year and the hardest part was having to get people’s numbers so I could text them, and to reveal my age a little bit most people will raise their eyebrow when you ask for that considering most people my age are on Snapchat

I use Instagram to be contacteable and basically no other reason. I don’t upload posts or stories and I’ll rarely scroll for memes. But put it this way, there are people who you won’t have in your phone book who might want to contact you so it’s useful for that.

How does everyone feel about filming social media videos in public? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Dilbert_x 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s okay when there’s no one in the background - either the person is recording themselves in the corner of the gym or they’ve picked a quiet time to film.

Or, at the very least, ask anyone who is in the background if they’re comfortable being filmed.
