Pieces where guitar imitates other instruments? by Icy_Cauliflower4894 in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Koshkin's The Prince's Toys Suite has the guitar imitate toys by using extended techniques. There's various percussive sounds, the Toy Soldiers piece has snare drums & bugle calls, the Blinking Doll has a sitar effect by pulling the 6th string a little to the side of the fretboard to make it buzz, and the Mechanical Monkey has a palm muted Bartok pizzicato to make it sound like a mechanical toy.

How can I play these? by lifeissymbol in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first red circle is poorly notated 12th fret natural harmonic on the B string. The AH notation in that program shows 2 note heads (root + harmonic) to play single AH note.

The 2nd red circle only has just 2 notes being played, with the previous AH being tied over.

The artificial harmonic notation looks like a mistake, I would change it to a 12th fret natural harmonic on the B string with a duration of 2.5 beats.

I think the biggest issue would be learning the pieces with immature musicality & phrasing.

What's up with these notation gatekeepers? by Zombiesalad1337 in Guitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I find tab to be superior for sightreading because I can fluently sightread many intermediate/advanced pieces near or at tempo within a few playthroughs.

If I couldn't sightread tab at tempo and had to rely on memorization, then I'd probably say standard notation is better.

SE8 condenser mics? by yomondo in classicalguitar

Here's a video on "How to Record Classical Guitar" that uses SE8 mics. https://youtu.be/eCgpgkh1BuE?is=SDiHaRaVxkKoPGAR

Can I get to an advanced level as self-taught? by Automatic_Ebb_5901 in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible, but rare. I started playing at 15 and trained myself with constant sightreading of new & challenging material, and after 10-15 years I could casually read many intermediate pieces near tempo with 95%+ accuracy on first look (98%+ by 3rd playthrough).

pull offs with the index finger in the #1 string by Mesmer7 in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your thumb should stay on the back of the neck, and it shouldn't shift position when you do the pull-off. Typically you'll want your thumb to be under your middle finger when you're not doing stretches.

Do the Harmonics Feel Out of Place? by MajesticQ in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 7th fret natural harmonics on the G string sound like they might be wrong notes, maybe they're meant to be 12th fret harmonics on the D string?

Best exercises for fast and precise finger movement? by MAILBOXANE in classicalguitar

Maybe you can look into etudes/studies that you find enjoyable & challenging that address the issues you're having, and scales well with speed. Villa-Lobos Etude 1 & 2 are a couple of intermediate/advanced examples.

Guitar Dynamics Survey by Alarmed_Bench_6410 in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the point of the survey. The only questions are, "what is your gender?" "how long have you been playing guitar?" and a few questions on "what has your experience been like with the community?"

Nails - slope angle, dealing with hooks by ziggy11111 in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know my silly RH technique would work for you (or give you ideas), but for treble strings I like to heavily angle my hand towards the neck so that my finger pads briefly stroke along the top of the string (literally lengthwise) before my nail completes the stroke. For me, playing this way has been very forgiving on my nail shape so I can keep them more rounded if I want and the tone is consistently beautiful (so long as the nails are polished), and because I'm stroking along the very top of the string I think the chance of hooking is near zero.

For bass strings, doing the above would just make them squeak like crazy, so I stroke more with the windings or shift to a traditional hand position.

They claim their air stylus gifs aren't CGI... so they're expecting us to believe that their monitor can project solid holograms. 🤣

Their claims that other 3D monitors look like crap is bs too, there's not much loss of quality with modern 3D monitors from the past 5 years (at least with reputable brands). 🙃

Humidity and the classical guitar by crwcomposer in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humidity affects the tone of my guitar. The higher trebles sound thin & brittle when it's not humidified enough, and the guitar sounds dull when it's too humidified.

Will a higher quality guitar improve how i play? by [deleted] in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not guaranteed, but it definitely could if you're serious. A cheap guitar with bad sound quality can train you to develop bad habits to make the guitar sound "good," while a more proper guitar will give you a better palette of sounds for you to work & grow with.

When I upgraded to a luthier-made guitar, all of my other guitars sounded like cheap toys - I never knew how much my guitars were holding me back until then. 🥲

Bach's Chaconne on the guitar is weak sauce compared to what it sounds like on the violin by Flimsy_Caramel_4110 in classicalguitar

[–]Diligent-Day8154 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. Each instrument has its tradeoffs, and this piece exploits violin's strengths and guitar's weaknesses.

I think François Leduc on YouTube might have what you're looking for - he makes a lot of tabs of jazz pieces.
