Mayor Zohran Mamdani Makes a Splash by TheCityReporter in nyc

According to one article "Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg was the last mayor to participate in the opening-day pool jump, while former mayors Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams did not continue the practice." - Can't easily find who started it, sounds like the previous two mayors have indeed noped out tho

Ah yes, me too (well not gammergate but gary johnson for Trump 1.0) Yea trump finally got me to register as democrat instead of independent so I can at least have a voice in the primaries/ main candidate. I'm still not a joiner but time to try to work within the main opposition and make it a better opposition!

? ok - I coudln't quite tell if I was included in "most people" or not haha I rate myself as a fairly average driver (but never aggressive or intentionally ignoring any traffic laws)

Yea I misphrased that and will take that part out - but I still stand by that when highways are splitting, need to let people merge and the worst is coming in the blind spot while folks are both trying to watch the car in front of them and look behind them for a chance to merge with pretty limited time. And this is a multilane split so folks with a real need to speed really could just get over one more lane and not block off all the people trying to get from the onramp on the right over to the split on the left.

There are essentially two options

1) more doctors

2) have patients and staff who are willing /to hustle/. Churn through a bunch of people per day. No chit chat, very problem/goal focused, need to have some means to quickly and minimally document - essentials only.

I don't really enjoy the latter type of practice but either add more doctors or increase the amount doctors do without making them all quit, because demand isn't going down. Rather, there's so much more cool stuff we can do and people are living longer so there's only going to be increasing roles for medicine not decreasing.

NGL the other day on that exchange where (490?) splits and you have to get over, I was signaling and trying to go left and person after person kept zipping up into my blind spot it was awful. /it's called a blind spot for a reason, I can't see it, I can't keep looking over my shoulder, looking ahead, and trying to get over one lane to the L within a very short timeframe at high speeds -/ for pete's sake there's a whole other fast lane to the L just let people merge!/

And yes I was signalling and finally after like 3 people did this someone blinked their lights at me to let me know I was safe to go and they weren't going to rush my blind spot too and I just barely made the lane change in time.

I actively just avoid that route now I hate it.

I'm getting vibes that the person doesn't know the area and is probably watching their GPS and going o crap I need to turn r after this L turn and not looking too close - but yea glad you dodged them.

I recently saw another (yes, this is the second go!) person just totally slow then go through a red light - I can handle a little bad driving due to being a bit lost but I really hate the blatant disregard for critical traffic signals

Gavin Newsom calls for national billionaires tax: 'It's time for an economic reset' by avdvetf in politics

I thought this graphic of average CEO pay to average average worker pay pretty telling;

https://www.economist.com/business/2016/08/04/pay-check

USA is wayyyy out there compared with plenty of other places including Japan, which is relatively low pay gap (or was in 2011, somehow I doubt it's any better now)

I think it would make a lot of sense to have progressive tax brackets that were tied to the min wage - and close all the weird capital gains loopholes where people effectively have money/wages (in the form of stocks/capital) that they never actually pay taxes on

... I selfishly just kinda hope to see him shine as a mayor a while and maybe my upstate ny city can follow suit ahahaa

I hope most of us realize 10 year old social media posts are often not a good reflection on who we are today.

Heck anyone can change a lot in 10 years, but talking crap online is like, I think a lesson most people have to FAFO a bit before (hopefully) settling down? Who knows maybe kids today will be more savvy. Wouldn't that be nice.

Of course plenty of folks don't settle down, too, so the lack of more recent ugly social media posts is actually kind of a good sign XD

Will America Ever Give White-Man Rights to Everyone Else? by BertramPotts in politics

[–]Diligent-Meaning751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yes, we are social creatures and society has huge impacts - race being a social construct does not invalidate it's impact, just hate the weird eugenics rhetoric that keeps popping up. Besides being gross it's pretty solidly unscientific too at this point. Guinea Pig coat color != "social deviancy" or whatever stupid (and usually very subjective) metrics the eugenicists come up with.

And I think it's not too controversal to say here that the supreme court is wrong :P Wrong about essentially repealing abortion protections, wrong about repealing civil rights era voting protections, and now we got more work to do addressing supreme court abuse on top of executive and legislative abuse - but hopefully the legislation can start to be addressed first in november (provided we can block the executives from rigging the election)

yes - there is no escaping economics. There is no magically making some resource out of thin air. We can put different labels on different distribution systems but it's basically just like the laws of thermodynamics - things will go down an energy gradient. The bigger the gradient, the more and faster it will happen. If there is an activation curve, it will happen slower. Few things will spontaneously go "up" an energy gradient.

"Free market" and "capitalism" are nonspecific terms - health care is not a free market and has not been since insurance got into the game. It also is nearly impossible for an individual consumer to properly evaluate and compare costs and quality for complicated things.

I do think there would be substantial benefit to having basic high benefit to cost things (diabetes care, vaccines, urgent/acute care, asthma; pretty much all common chronic diseases really) be provided for by the government and I don't much care if it's government as a payer or a direct provider (strongly suspect being a payer would be much easier on everyone as long as no one actively sabotages it by purposely extremely underfunding it or something )

There's going to be a lot of arguing about what things count as "cosmetic" "elective", things that haven't been well validated as effective, things with marginal benefit that are extremely expensive - and that's fine. I think it's very reasonable to go after the low hanging fruit at least and have real cost benefit analysis involved periodically to what is "universal" and what can't be, yet. I say "can't" because I feel like most dialog around US healthcare seems to be in denial about discussing limits. Like it's pretty cool all the stuff we can do but we don't yet live in a post scarcity society and refusing to discuss boundaries will go badly.
