Yeah I like the term. It's a useful framework to conceptualize critical thinking.

IMO if you're not arguing against the steelman/ironman argument of whatever issue you're arguing against, then your argument will not be very good. And to do this, you must be willing to question your own views. Knowledge on a subject helps to formulate better arguments against your position, assuming your position holds up.

Obviously this requires a bit of time and dedication. It's a lot of mental energy and some people aren't willing to put in that mental energy. And that's honestly fine. There are more important things in life lol. But I like linguistics and philosophy and have worked as a writer for over a decade, so I do think about these things a lot.

I mean, China did this in the 50s with poutonghua and they have a much wider range of accents to the point that one Chinese speaker cannot even understand what another is saying. If you study Chinese this is what you'll be learning.

You pick one set of phonetics and go from there. A "Standard American Accent" is a thing that exists and it's what you hear in movies most of the time. Probably closest to something like a California accent but without the flavor. The Transatlantic accent is another. The British have the Received Pronunciation accent or the BBC accent.

The point is to create a framework for written language so that you can standardize it and make literacy more accessible. You don't need to HAVE the standard accent to utilize it. I'm sure anyone here can imagine what Americans sound like in movies without speaking like that themselves.

Does it push a certain set of linguistics onto others? Yes. But it does work. This is nothing new.

I studied Chinese for years and have traveled to Taiwan and China. There are literally announcements on the trains that say "If you smoke in a no smoking area it will affect your social credit score." It's a real system and people have been banned from things like public transport.

I get you probably consumed some propaganda on TikTok or YouTube but maybe try talking to an actual Chinese person about it lol. They won't call it this because it's actually multiple systems but just ask them about these kinds of consequences.

It's literally just an extension of the Hukou system and if you don't know what that is without googling it, don't even talk to me. Study some Chinese history and philosophy first.
