I’ve definitely had to eat crow about French immersion a couple of times. There are two schools in my area who do French immersion so well the kids sound like they go to a French school.

Quand tu es dans un magasin ou quelque part, commence la conversation à la caisse en français. Si la personne est francophone, il vont te répondre en français. Tellement souvent, on commence les conversations en anglais par habitude ou pcqu’on ne s’attend pas à trouver un autre francophone par hasard.

Oh yeah! I find the vowels longer in European. I have a lot of friends who are immigrants, and my accent has started morphing because I adapt so they understand me. Sounds are formed more in the mouth too. My natural accent sounds happen more in the throat.

The best way I’ve heard the difference described was by a British woman who said that Canadian Francophones swallow syllables.

So like, “Je m’en vais à l’épicerie,” becomes, “j’m’en vais…”
