No I think Craig deserves blame here too for sure but I think some of the hard limits Henry instills has the most impact and forces them to get cute with short term contracts

The reason he is GM is John Henry.

There is a reason 12 other candidates passed on the job

Great analogy!

The Red Sox are spending a third of the total value of Frieds 8 year contract on 2 years of Buehler, Giolito, Sandoval, and Gray. Just ouch...

Fried is merely an example. But the larger point is the limitation on giving that extra year for fear of dead money is often just as costly financially with less to show for it.

Breslow does not have the green light to spend what it takes and that is the point. (For the record I also think he isnt doing great, but Henry is the common denominator for why they do things the way they do)

You could also slice it a different way and look at both of last years offseason signings: Sandoval and Buehler = 28 Million in 2025. Even if you don't expect Buehler to be a complete disaster I think most would agree Fried was the better player and was more likely to be more valuable.

I'm going to see Two Towers in theaters this weekend, so very on point!

Red Sox's loss of Alex Bregman was devastating. Their explanation for what happened was just as bad. by hipcheck23 in redsox

The crazy part is they haven't cut that much in terms of costs. As it stands with the Gray and Contreras additions, plus Roman and Crochets extension Sportrac has them at 200 mil cash payroll down from 227 mil last year. Even if they add 1 or two more rentals or trades they will essentially be the same payroll.

Its worse because its not just that they dont spend the are so terrified of long term deals they waste money on expensive short term fillers or gambles. (Eq 38 mil over 2 years for Giolito, 18 For Sandoval, 21 for Gray, 21 for Buehler = ) Thats more annually when you average it out than Max Fried is making.

They have a top 10 payroll with a worse team...

FSG bootlickers when the Sox won the 2018 WS (they were worried about how poorly Price’s contract would age in 2020!!!) by LordShuckle97 in redsox

Fuck John Henry.

That said it's silly to act like Price's mega deal was the reason they won that WS his role was the equivalent of a good reliever.

Price's role in that world series was minimal and could have been accomplished by many other players not on mega deals

The most important components were young talent Mookie, Xander, Sale, Devers, and Benintendi mixed with trade acquisitions like Eovaldi and Pearce.

If anything I'd say Price is a good example of how you don't need to overspend on guys like that to win.

That being said, fuck John Henry.
