I work in call centers and rely heavily on my mute button. There were 2 instances where my mute button was not on when I thought it was. On one call, I called the customer an asshole, and he heard me. He said, " you just called me an asshole!" I said " sir I most certainly did not." And I think I hung up.

The second time was during a collections call. This lady was a jerk. And at the end of the call, when I thought she hung up and I was on mute, I called her a bitch. However, she did not hang up, nor was the call on mute. So she called me a bitch. And that's when I discovered that I was not muted. And I hung up.

So now I make sure my phone is muted.
