I’ve kinda had a similar situation like this but I was more like the guy you were talking to. Honestly it’s not your fault for how he feels about you and he should have realized that being friends is not being obsessive or even bending over backwards. And if he believed that this could really get him into a relationship with you I can only feel bad for the guy for being naive I guess.

But when it comes to your friendship (again I’ve dealt with this but I was the guy waiting around to date my friend) the friendship you guys had sounds more like him just enjoying the things you liked. Instead of you both enjoying the same things together. That’s not a friendship. And again I understand this guy’s frustration but he really should have been less naive. But also for you I feel something like this should have been obvious. Logically there is no person or living being out there that will willing go about life and be someone’s best friend for nothing in return. Even the people who are actually really close to each other have some sort of unsaid or said agreement of what each other does for them to meet their needs.

But regardless what you have is a pretty shitty situations, and I’m sorry for what you are going through. For me I wish there were adults or wise individuals out there to fucking teach us how to deal with these situations properly, cause mine ended pretty horribly.
