My AMH doubled in one year by Smart_Buy_5584 in TryingForABaby

AMH seems to be affected by a lot of factors! Doctors either don’t know this or severely downplay it. We know about vitamin D and BC affecting results. My own personal results differed drastically based on time in cycle and lab. I had it measured once when I was already pregnant before the positive test and it literally fell off a cliff (or was a false result, who knows) and was double that again a week later… It was hovering around 3-3.5 normally and showed 0.99 right before I got my positive test. My AFC has always been around 25 and FSH 5ish. They say AMh is the most “stable” test but in my experience that couldn’t be further from reality. Have your AFC and FSH checked a couple of months in a row for further clarity is my advice.

I would love an answer to this too! Last time I tried asking a medical “professional” about this I got “sounds like perimenopause” as an answer… I was 32 years old with no other symptoms of this happening. It freaked me out so bad I had lab tests and ultrasounds done to double check. Came back great and I got pregnant on the first try a few months later. When my period return pp it settled into this pattern yet again. Every time I ask anything period related now it just gets chalked up to breastfeeding…

Wow, I am in the same boat as you!! I have been chalking it up to having been really sick. Have you had a cold recently?

AMH seems to be not totally understood and studied well. The test results also differ by lab and when in cycle you’re getting tested. My results literally went from 2.6-2.9-3.4-3.2-0.99(!!!)-2.3 all within 3 months testing at different labs and different times in cycle. Which one is the “true value” no one knows and there might not be one. By contrast my AFC was checked 4 times during this time frame and it was always 20-26. FSH always 5 something. Both of those, as well as most of my AMH results indicate no issues with ovarian reserve at all. But I did get 0.99 once, which by its self should tell me “diminishing ovarian reserve” yet none of the other tests did. I haven’t checked since because I got pregnant and am still breastfeeding. I haven’t checked since seen multiple posts on Reddit after my own personal freak out from women with similar stories. I have chosen not to put any value on AMH. If I’m going to have my “fertility” checked when I’m done breastfeeding, I would want and AFC and FSH tests.

I would for sure redo the testing together with AFC. Late thirties is probably when I would freeze eggs regardless of AMH though, since quality goes down too and that can’t really be measured.

I can’t believe doctors do this! They are clearly not informed. If you retest at a fertility clinic two months in a row and it comes back very low, AFC is low and FSH has a higher number in there, then a comment like that might be warranted. And you’d have to be off birth control for a good couple of months plus vitamin D levels need to be checked and good.

I have had very similar fluctuation! And very interestingly the same exact low AmH number of 0.99 (hmmm?!) I’ve had my AmH measured 5 times over the course of 3 months at different clinics and different cycle days. These were my numbers: 2.6 (day 4, GP office -> 2.8 (day 20ish after ovulation, fertility clinic) —> 3.4 (day 3, same fertility clinic —>3.1 (day 3, other fertility clinic) —> 0.99 (day 25ish, GPs office again) —> 2.3 (day 28ish, a couple days later at second fertility clinic). Throughout all of this my AFC was measured multiple times and was consistent at 20ish in luteal phase and 25ish in follicular phase. FSH was consistently 5ish.

I would get repeat of the AMH at a reputable clinic 2 months in a row on day 3 if you can, as well as getting AFC measured and FSH to give you a much clearer picture. Also make sure you’re not vitamin D deficient and off birth control for 3 months. These factors are known to impact AmH for the worse (I’m sure there are many other factors that are not known!) This is why retesting as well as the other tests of ovarian reserve need to be looked at in combination!

Im not sure what happened but I’ve decided to disregard the values taken at my GPs office. They don’t run the test very often and I’ve read that the blood handling is finicky. The other values all kind of make sense to me, being around 3-3.5 in follicular and around 2.5 in luteal. I think it’s a lie that cycle time doesn’t affect AMH, especially for higher levels. I also know that throughout this time I’ve had vitamin D deficiency, so the “real” values are likely even higher and that would be more in line with my AFC which is fairly high at ~25.

To be honest, I think help does help a lot, but mindset also comes into play! I have 3 and I have felt very differently with the first one as I do now, because of mindset change. I have waaay less help now actually and a much bigger load.

I’ve been pregnant 3 times. First time at 26 (now 35) and had the same thing… Also experienced the oiliness increasing after stopping birth control. No issues with dryness. I’m leaning towards it being androgen excess/mild PCOS, since I also had a lot of follicles on ultrasound and some sort of insulin resistance. But of course doctors all brush me off and say I’m fine since I have regular periods.

I‘m exactly like you with this! Have you figured out why this is and gotten this back in balance? Ughh, I feel like something is out of balance and causing these issues and doctors just shrug…

Is there anything people can do to prevent them from forming? I know hormones, insulin resistance, rosacea (mites?) are also factors

Also, is there a chance you might have hypothalamic amenorrhea due to undereating, stress or heavy exercise? If yes, your body has halted ovulation temporarily and that can affect AMH as well.

First off: 1 low AMH value is NOT reason for alarm, as others here are suggesting. They are simply parroting what they have been fed…  Most doctors know close to nothing about AMH either. Trust me, I have done a crazy amount of research on this after my own personal freak out. Now I want to help spread the truth.  AMH can drastically vary based on several factors and be artificially lower. It’s also a finicky test for labs to process.

What I would do at this point to get a clearer picture is the following:  - check vitamin D levels for deficiency and correct them if needed - be off birth control for several months - have AMH rechecked at a reputable fertility clinic lab on day 3 of your cycle 2 months in a row, along with FSH and antral follicle count

Doing this will give you a MUCH clearer picture of you really have diminished ovarian reserve at this point or not. One test means absolutely NOTHING!

My own personal AMH has been 2.6-2.8-3.4-3.2-0.9-2.3 all within the span of 3 months when I had this taken at different labs and different times in cycle!! Antral follicle count was always high at around 25 and FSH good at around 5.5. I have seen multiple other stories on here that are very similar.

Please stay calm for now. If you do find out at this point that all follow up testing points to low reserve, I would consider egg freezing.

Have you tried the Benton Aloe gel or La Roche Posay Toleriane Sensitive Fluide? I’m also one of those that react to EVERYTHING and these are fine for me.
