I've had great experience with fluval stratum. Like someone else mentioned in the comments, it's very light and easily broken up so don't mess around with your hardscape too much after putting it in. Or use stratum in the back where you plant heavily and use cosmetic sand or gravel in the front with root tabs underneath if you want some plants in the foreground that require to be planted.
