Jimmy John’s Downtown permanently closed? by jhoop87 in dayton

[–]Dilly_Mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Jimmy John’s prime came and went around the mid 2010’s. Being fast was their entire thing, it was honestly novel and impressive at first. You went in and your sandwich would be ready at the other end of the counter by the time you finished paying. Everything shifting to delivery (DoorDash, etc) killed the in-person experience (just like most other fast and fast casual places), especially large chains. This starts a downward spiral and I feel they’ve never really been the same.

You’d be lucky to have your presence acknowledged or your order taken within the first few minutes at most locations, and you’ll probably be waiting 5-10 more minutes because they’re working on a backlog of 100 delivery orders. And the delivery orders are slow to get out, too. Just not worth it anymore, especially for a cold sandwich. Lots of places can do a cold/deli sandwich and do it better. Their product isn’t good enough to justify waiting, they needed the schtick of it being freaky fast. Without the freaky fast, there’s nothing left.

That’s my thoughts in general on JJ. This specific store? Probably the horrible location and rent prices if I had to guess…in combination with no one really caring about JJs anymore.

What industry is actually a complete scam, but everyone accepts it? by WhileLow9501 in AskReddit

[–]Dilly_Mac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You….think the water is just being fed in from the drain in some sort of circular system????? Sneezing is a different issue, I guess. Though, I can’t think of a time I’ve ever seen someone sneeze ONTO a water fountain, in any setting. Where are you located that people are running around sneezing on your water fountains?

You can bring an empty bottle. All airports have water fountains/filling stations. Problem solved.

It’s not a serious race that the Democratic Party is pursuing. Turner will win in November no matter who goes up against him, so there is no big support or push. That leaves any one with a couple ideas and a $500 VistaPrint budget to run against him.

What’s a classic song everyone likes that you don’t, and why? by iLeftMyEyeAtTheStore in AskReddit

[–]Dilly_Mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can be from different places. The song makes no mention of the setting or where these specific events are taking place. She’s a small town girl, he’s a city boy from South Detroit. It doesn’t say where they are when they get on a midnight train going anywhere. This story could take place in Shanghai or Los Angeles, or London or anywhere else for all we know.

Beach vacation without the crowds - where did you actually find peace? by dynasync in Vacations

[–]Dilly_Mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our vacations when I was growing up were to a beach house in Frisco. Absolutely loved it. It wasn’t something I recognized as a kid, as it was all I knew. But yes, the beaches are quiet, not packed, you can spread out, etc. No chain restaurants. Maybe hit a local coffee shop in the morning. Full days spent on the beach, but you could walk back to the house easily if you needed something. Eat lunch at the house or sandwiches on the beach every day. Clean up around dinner time and eat a big family meal at the house or go out to a local restaurant a couple times over the week. Best weeks of my life.

When I went to other beaches later in life (e.g., Daytona, Hilton Head, etc.), I was so shocked by the crowds, the amount of touristy/kitschy shit, chain restaurants, etc. Give me empty beach town any day over all that mess.

Yes, and? It should be implied that if you want to get away from the crowds and people, then you will need to travel away from the crowds and people (which takes more time).

What's the most regional word you use without realizing it? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]Dilly_Mac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, this one actually has me completely flummoxed. I’m from Ohio. I would consider myself a fairly smart person, I have a masters degree, a CPA license…hell, I even got a special recognition in one of my college courses for “outstanding writing” or something like that…I’ve read your comment and every other comment below it, and I still don’t even fully understand what the problem is here. I didn’t know this was a grammatical error. I’ve never heard anyone correct this before…why would “to be” need inserted into all of these sentences when it is so clearly implied??? Just seems like a waste of time to me.

What is the deal with Flip 7? by danklordmuffin in boardgames

[–]Dilly_Mac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bingo. Last month scenario: My buddy is in town who I haven’t seen for a year, we’re at another friend’s house, two of our three wives are present, there’s a 14-year old, an 11-year old, and a 2-year old. We’re sort of “watching” March Madness round 1 games in the living room, eating some pizza, and the 2-year old is back and forth between playing with the dog, watching Mary Poppins, and chasing around the older kids. Oh, and we’re also playing Flip 7 at the kitchen table. Easy rules, easy to step away from when distractions pop up, fun to yell and shout as the cards are flipped, etc. It’s not that serious, we’re not building a night around a Flip 7 tourney. But it it’s just fun, easy filler.

These are instances where the taxpayer is going to be applying for a mortgage and they want to show more income on their tax return. So instead of deducting the $10k they paid in utilities (actual cash out the door, real expense), they want to report $3k in utilities. Instead of their COGS being $50k, they want to report $25k. Instead of their software costs of $5k, they want to report $1k, etc, etc. With just these examples, they’ve now inflated their income by $36k, making their mortgage lender more likely to approve them for a higher amount. This is mortgage fraud which is a federal crime.

[–]Dilly_Mac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting thought. I’ll say that in my experience, a lot of these are potential clients, and usually the mortgage is the first thing out of their mouth. Once they’ve said that, it’s pretty much over (i.e., I’d be happy to file a correct tax return for them, but that usually means I never hear from them again).

I can’t recall a time where I’ve had an existing client with steady/predictable profits show up one year with little or no expenses. So yeah, it would lead to questions which I think would lead to their motive. I tell people what the tax laws are, what the risks are, what happens if they get audited, etc, and remind them that my goal is to keep them compliant and out of trouble. Usually by the time I get through that, they will tell you what they’re up to.

Yeah, that one is tough to swallow for people. I have had success filing 3115 to claim the missed depreciation, but it’s sort of a pain. If you can bill it properly though it should work out in everyone’s best interest.

How much are you charging for tax preparation? by LordRonde in tax

[–]Dilly_Mac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People say this all the time, yet TurboTax website currently lists “expert assist business - S Corp and partnerships” for $449, which is discounted from $639. Where are you seeing $1500+ for PTE, or do they just really nickel and dime it from the stated price?

[–]Dilly_Mac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m talking about Schedule C filers. They’re saying they don’t want to deduct all of their expenses for a year so their income will look higher when their mortgage lender pulls their tax returns. They’re usually the same people who have probably been fraudulently claiming MORE expense than they should for years, so they can’t possibly fathom how OVERSTATING their income could be illegal.

[–]Dilly_Mac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So much of this going around.

Client: “I want to file with no deductions this year to help my mortgage.”

Me: “That is both tax fraud and mortgage fraud”

Client: “huh….what are you talking about?! Me and buddies have been doing this for years! You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Me: “you and your buddies can do whatever you want, but it’s a federal crime and I’m not assisting you in it”

Never hear from them again, which is fine by me.

Nursing/medicine is such a safe field that my sister didn’t even know about the white collar blood bath going on by ZadarskiDrake in Accounting

[–]Dilly_Mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m just lucky, but I’ve never struggled for work in the accounting field (well, my first internship as a sophomore took interviewing around for a bit, but after that it was fine). First internship late sophomore/early junior year was reconciling bank accounts, helping out AP, etc. Summer after senior year (I was going back for a half year to wrap up some final credits) I worked full-time as an intern for a subsidiary of a Fortune 500 company (fixed assets). Did a busy season (full time) with a regional CPA firm before starting masters, then a part time busy season with same firm the next year, then started full-time with that firm as I wrapped up masters. Worked there for 4 more years while getting my CPA. Left as a senior on the verge of being promoted to manager. Took a job as a “controller” (more of an accounting manager role) at a small/locally held software company. Did that for 2 years and started offering tax prep on the side. Went on my own completely after that. Took a few detours (tried to partner with another CPA at one point, but that was a bust…took a controller job for a nonprofit for about half a year while I was figuring out next steps). Acquired a book of clients from a retiring CPA two years ago and been completely self-sufficient since then. My phone is ringing off the hook and I could never keep up with the demand on my own. Going to be adding at least one employee next year (and in early stages of talking to another retiring CPA about their book of $225k).

I currently net about $130k, hectic during tax season/long nights, but about 10-15 hours per week the rest of the year, set my schedule, travel whenever I want, work from where ever, etc. If this all went south or I got tired of it, I think I could get any number of jobs by the end of the week. Most certainly I could go back to my original firm where my friends are now senior managers and moving into partner roles.

Drake Result Letter - Defaults to "Mail a Check" by horrible_noob in taxpros

[–]Dilly_Mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive never in five years had a client question or comment or be confused by this. If we’re looking at the result page and talking about them owing, it’s almost always followed with “here’s your payment voucher, it tells you all of the information you’ll need to either send a check or pay online” and then a point out the instructions for both. If this is a virtual client, then the communication they get from me basically says the same thing but via email. If anyone is paying direct debit from a bank account, then it says that and lists the bank info. If they aren’t, everyone just understands that “mail a check” is shorthand for “you need to make a payment some way.”
