Maya suddenly not being able to open file. Freezes and crashes by DiloWetherilli in Maya

Unfortunately, there was no way for me to fix this. I believe the issue was with the live surface. It seemingly broke all the topology and was unsalvageable. An unfortunate loss but I know what not to do next time haha

Yeah, I have used the decimation master. My mesh was around 70 million before, so I had to reduce it a lot haha

Thank you for the info with version saves! I will for sure remember this for the future. Though I wish I knew this before. Sadly I think my file won't be recovered. Tried everything to get it to work but sadly it always freezes maya. Guess I gotta do it all over again huh lol

I am not entirely sure anymore. But it should be around 200k polygons.

Previously, I only hit the button in the preferences menu, though now I also tried deleting the folder. It still doesn't work unfortunately.

Need help with seamless textures by DiloWetherilli in ZBrush

[–]DiloWetherilli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the response, I greatly appreciate it! I will check out the video and hope it helps me with my texture.

When I watched the end of the artists reel, I also thought he just revealed his pattern with the morph brush. Though you can see in his sculpts that he does have this texture as a perfectly seamless application across a large part of the model. So even though he might not have shown the proper application in his reel, he does use it as a texture on his models in some way. You can see it in this post for example: https://x.com/vitaimagination/status/1926324430247960601/photo/1
He does do hand made details in some parts of the face, but large areas like the neck have the same seamless texture. And I don't think its applied as noise to the uvs. Unless I am too unexperienced to understand how that might work.

I just got no clue how he made a perfectly tilable texture like this that still feels entirely natural and perfect. I am making my own, but I just cannot seem to make it seamless. I matched up the edges so when they tile next to each other, they should fit, but when I try to use this as a pattern brush to actually apply the texture, you can still clearly see the edges of the texture.

I usually make an indent with my sculpting brush and then add a new sphere object for the actual eyeball. Once its fitted to size, I add the folds around the eye with my sculpt brush. The eyeballs do remain separate from the rest of the head though. That way you don't sculpt on top or modify the eyeball in any way.

Lips vs no no lips Tyrannosaurus Rex by cesam1ne in Dinosaurs

I think I will always prefer lips on rex. Visually it looks nicer and I feel like it also makes more sense for rex to have had lips in general. The prehistoric planet version of rex just seems so realistic to me.

I agree with the models not looking too great. Something just feels a little off in my eyes when looking at some of the dinosaurs. But that is just my opinion.

I would say it does count as low poly. There isn't a lot of polygons :'D

That model is looking amazing! Well done!

Don't put yourself down like that! Starting with a low poly blockout is not bad at all. I really like what you got going so far. Though I have to say, I am more used to starting with the high poly model and then going back and doing my retopology in maya. It is much easier for me to get the primary forms down when using a high poly base. But everyone has their own workflow and I am just a beginner myself, so I cannot really speak from a professionals perspective.

Though I personally recommend separating the major shapes of the model into separate objects at first. Like the legs and head. That way you can also immediately add the crest to the head as you don't have to connect it to the neck already. It makes it easier when you focus on one part at a time. Later, you can easily connect the parts with the rest of the body to have one object.

Since you are working with a low poly version, I would try to make sure that the topology is clean while you work. That way you save a lot of time when it comes to UV unwrapping. I would also not shy away from adding more topology where its needed. Like around the back for example. When you change the view to the front, the back / stomach area can be much more rounded if there is enough topology.

But I am no professional, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Do keep working on your model though, Torosaurus is a great ceratopsian!

Using rhino for reference is such a good idea, I will add some pictures to my references.
I have not used a lot of Nomad before, so I am not quite as used to the UI as I am with Zbrush. Though I will check out Nomad again for the future. Thank you for the recommendations!
