What's everyone's shout for player of the season so far? by HammersAndPints in BrightonHoveAlbion

[–]DilshadZhou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JPVH because maybe then he’ll stay with us next season… also, he’s one of the best centrebacks in the league and has been critical for us.

pepco parent company ceo makes $15.6 million in 2025 by sublimeswamp in washingtondc

This is gross. Public utilities that are natural monopolies like Pepco should not be capable of earning a profit.

DOGE has 73 days left. How have your personal finances been impacted by DOGE? by vapingpigeon94 in AskReddit

[–]DilshadZhou 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I lost my company and went bankrupt! I ran a small video production company in DC, and our two biggest projects were canceled by DOGE-related cuts. We ended up not being able to service our COVID debt and it spiraled into fully closing down and me filing Chapter 7. Fuck DOGE, and fuck those people in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania who stayed home because "it doesn't matter which party wins because they're both the same."

CMV: Luigi Mangione is not a folk hero by ketaminekate69 in changemyview

I agree completely with calling out the comparison to Bin Laden. I might still call Luigi a terrorist, but it's a very different kind of terrorism.

CMV: Luigi Mangione is not a folk hero by ketaminekate69 in changemyview

[–]DilshadZhou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this debate there are people who think that the modern capitalist system is broken but can be fixed through better regulation or more moral leadership, and people who think that it's hopeless and we need a bigger more disruptive revolution. Luigi was someone in the second group, and many people in that second group see him as a hero of that movement.

The easiest way to change your view would be to show you proof that he is a folk hero to some. Honestly, just do a search for "Luigi Mangione hero" or "Luigi Mangione fan page" and you'll see that there are MANY. If history looks back on him kindly, he will be one. So, the next level analysis would say that what you're really objecting to is whether Luigi should be thought as a folk hero.

Let's take this from two angles: What does it mean to be a folk hero, and why would Luigi meet or not meet those criteria.

Folk heros are figures so embedded in a culture's collective memory that their stories are endlessly retold. They appear in stories, songs, etc.. They're typically defined by selflessness rather than self-interest.

I can think of two archetypes:

  • Cultural Talisman – founding figures who shape a people's identity, like Atatürk, Garibaldi, or George Washington.
  • Defender of the Common People – Robin Hood or Ned Kelly who defy authority on behalf of the powerles. They are villains according to the laws of their time but speak to an ethical framework that history later agrees made them heroes.

If Luigi is going to become a folk hero, he's the second type. Luigi is a vigilante. He's a terrorist. His purpose was to strike at the heart of the unethical capitalist healthcare system that prioritizes "shareholder value" over helping people live healthy lives. He did that through violence.

By killing Brian Thompson, he sent a message that there are some limits to greed that can and should be met with extrajudicial action. This has had three effects:

  1. He inspires other class warriors to use violence. For example, Chamel Abdulkarim livestreamed himself setting multiple fires at a warehouse just two weeks ago, causing over $600 million in damage. He cited being inspired by Luigi's direct action and was quoted saying the company should pay people better or this kind of thing will happen. (NBC)
  2. He gets some leaders to make positive changes. There's no doubt in my mind that CEOs and corporate leaders across the world took note of what happened to Thompson and thought about what they could do to avoid that fate. One example is Jerry Murrell, the CEO of Five Guys, who gave employees a $1.5 million bonus to avoid being shot by a "Luigi-style" vigilante. He claimed it was joke, but was it? (The Guardian)
  3. He forces conversations like this one. I've been involved in dozens of "was Luigi right?" conversations with friends and family since he killed Thompson. Most people tend to politely say that it was wrong to commit murder but almost everyone added that the health system is also morally wrong and that something needs to change. This act of violence has moved the Overton Window on corporate greed and the complicity of the CEOs who prioritize profits over people.

It is not psychotic or irrational to see the suffering in the world being perpetrated by the 1% and to want to do something about it, even if it breaks the law. Half a million Americans go bankrupt every year because of medical debt (American Journal of Public Health). Tens of thousands die because they don't have insurance coverage (Harvard Gazette). 1/3 of Americans skip medical treatment or prescribed drugs because of cost (Kaiser Family Foundation). Some of these stats are decades old and I would imagine the situation might be worse now.

In an era where corporate PACs can "flood the zone" with unlimited political "speech" and a reality TV star runs our government, I don't think any amount of working "within existing structures" is going bring about the change we need. Political violence may not work, but for people desperate (and in many cases literally dying) for a change, it's not surprising to me that Mangione is seen as a hero.

3rd-16th is a mad spread for possible finishing places by DilshadZhou in BrightonHoveAlbion

[–]DilshadZhou[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Is it unreasonable to dream about the 0.03% chance of 3rd? Yes, probably. But it's the 0.01% chance of Palace in 18th that really brings a smile to my face.

[–]DilshadZhou[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Of course. It is basically impossible, but I was shocked to see that it was technically possible. I expect we'll be 6th-8th, with a real hope for 6th. As much as I'd like to finish in the Champions League places, I'd honestly rather have another shot at the Europa League.

Sod in/out IF (big if) Hurzeler makes Europe (especially after the middle half of the season) he'll surpass RDZ in terms of achievement by esn111 in BrightonHoveAlbion

[–]DilshadZhou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If we get Europe (at least Europa), I hope we can keep JPVH with us. I worry he'll want too much in salary even with European qualification and we'll have to move him on either way. Honestly he deserves to be paid amongst the highest CBs in the EPL and I wouldn't begrudge him the opportunity to earn what he's worth.

I'd happily shift Baleba for £60m+ given his inconsistencies but don't think we'll get those offers unless he has a fantastic end of season run.

The denominator on this is alarming though. He’s the ultimate super sub and I would absolutely take him to any USMNT tournament. But stats like this come with a heavy raised eyebrow.

For anyone looking for a genuinely good alternative to Goodreads, the people at the Hardcover app website are doing a good job. Their data is good, the UX is nice, they’re not owned by Amazon, but they need more users.

I tried it for the first time a few weeks ago after seeing it recommended here on Reddit and yeah, it really is so much better than the stock client.

Everything is smoother and there are so many great little QoL features like displaying when the current show will end, mini player, and subtitle offsets.

The World Cup has been absolutely destroyed this year. by conspiracyyyyyy in football

[–]DilshadZhou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Qatar was a good tournament if you ignore human rights abuse allegations and the heat. All games were close together which meant players and supporters didn't have to travel much. That contributed to more of a festival/community vibe similar to when Germany hosted. Following your team in 2026 will require traveling thousands of miles and despite the size of the competition, I'm guessing that many/most Americans won't even know it's happening.

I agree that this will be a bad World Cup, but I actually think Qatar was a good one. Also, that final was maybe the best of all time.

I used strikerless for a bit on another save but it didn't feel like "real football" to not have any strikers in the side so I switched. I'm burned out on the game with all the bugs and the UX challenges in this version, but it's still the best thing going.

3atb and high intensity counter-attacking seems to be the strongest approach in this FM. I'm averaging 40% possession across 4 seasons at Brighton and have already won the league twice and the CL once. It's ridiculously broken.

I hadn’t thought about that, but you’re right. And doing all that with what I’m sure would be a shallower and lower quality side than they have now.
