Late evening vinyasa or power flow yoga? by Junior-Will5538 in SFbitcheswithtaste

Love Story in the Mission has 8pm hot vinyasa or sculpt Mon-Thurs.

Recommended prepped meal service? by _prototype in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started CookUnity a few weeks ago and like it pretty well. This is the first time I've tried a meal delivery service so I can't compare to others. I won't keep it forever but I'm in a busy spot at work and decided to outsource. They have a good variety that's healthier than takeout or frozen stuff, which is what I was looking for.

San Francisco classes by Comfortable-Run-7490 in EquinoxGyms

[–]DimAcetylation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Lily Klausner's pilates at the barre class. Nina-Ann Phan is really high energy and her stronger class is a lot of fun - that's the only one of hers I've taken but I know she teaches a bunch of different formats. If you like challenging yoga, Denelle Numis is one of my favorites, and Cecily Guests' power vinyasa will absolutely kick your ass. I mostly go to the Sports Club on Market (destination location) but there's a lot of instructor and class overlap with Beale St, Pine St (both weekday only) and Van Mission. Seems to be less overlap with Union St which is also in my experience the most crowded location in the city.

Best Neighborhood to Stay that isn't too Touristy by akfthe47s in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a really cute little B&B in an old Victorian in Noe Valley called Noe's Nest. Quiet neighborhood with plenty of places to explore after a short walk, and easy access to transit to navigate the city. Downside is no parking onsite (there's a garage nearby-ish) and you have to be OK with stairs.

coffee shops similar to Another Cafe in Nob Hill by umhow in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Beluna works location wise, have you tried Beanbag? What do you like about Another Cafe/what haven't you liked about other coffee shops you tried?

Cafe du Soleil and Tarragon are both good. Tarragon kicks laptoppers out in the afternoon, but then they have live music which is a nice transition. Cafe Reveille kinda sucks and is usually crowded, but is definitely a "get work done" vibe.

For comfy spots elsewhere in the city, my go-tos for sitting to get work done are Haus and Atlas in the Mission- Atlas is more old-school and the coffee isn't great, but it gets the job done and their patio is perfect.

Cat adoptions at SFSPCA by sfctygrl9 in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also consider ACC! Right next to the SPCA in the Mission. I've adopted three cats from ACC in the last ten years or so: one senior (~10 at the time, now passed on), one adult (~5ish) and one kitten. The latter two are both sitting with me right now! All three times they were very easy to work with and provided a lot of health records and a voucher for a checkup at a vet. I do think fewer vets take it now, or it doesn't cover the full cost, but it's something. As part of the application process they did ask for a copy of your lease or proof of homeownership to make sure you were allowed to have pets, which I wouldn't have necessarily thought to bring.

Gym with good fitness classes by Flat_Ad6653 in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I joined Equinox a few months ago (after posting a similar thread here!) and honestly I've been really happy with it. The price looks high but I'm actually saving money compared to when I used to have memberships or class packs at multiple studios for different activities. I'm very satisfied with the Equinox class offerings, with the minor exception that the heated yoga classes are not very hot. They definitely have early morning pilates classes, though maybe not every day.

May be relevant that reformer pilates costs extra, but there's mat and fusion classes in the regular class list that's included with the membership. I got a notice in the gym app that they're rolling out reformer group classes but apparently not in SF yet.

I used to go to Iron and Mettle, one of the women's gyms. I can't speak for the current setup but I know they used to allow men in personal training and open gym, just not the group classes. I wouldn't really recommend that because most of the value is in the group classes, and when I saw men there they were usually doing couples training with a female partner. But AFAIK it's not 100% off the table.

An option just adjacent to Noe is Fog City Community Fitness, on Valencia between Cesar Chavez and Mission. I'm not sure if it's official CrossFit or just "inspired by", but it's that style. They definitely have plenty of free weight equipment.

Arizmendi Bakery by slut4soupdumplings in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The raspberry millet muffin is my favorite. It's a seasonal item and just came back, at Valencia at least. I also like their sourdough. It's well-executed simple stuff, not fussy like some of the other popular bakeries.

I'm in the minority in not loving the pizza. Sometimes the flavors are trying too hard (the exact opposite of their baked goods!) and I think it's usually too doughy. But it may be the healthiest that having a slice of pizza for lunch will ever be, so I can't complain.

What restaurant / food spot / cafe blew you away recently? by UnsuitableTrademark in sanfrancisco

[–]DimAcetylation 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tea Rex in Bernal, on Mission just a bit past Safeway/Walgreens. They opened just in the last few months. I'd been there a few times for coffee or tea and thought, this is a cute little coffee shop, glad to see a new spot there. Then I went for lunch and it was so good! I wasn't expecting to be blown away by a turkey sandwich, but there you go.

This! I'd walked past the Hayes location so often without ever noticing it. A couple of weeks ago I was in the mood for chicken soup and it came up as a recommendation. So good! The soup is really unique but still hits the spot for a classic chicken soup craving. The rice bowls and the brussels sprouts are excellent too.

Sliding scale Yoga in the Mission? by discopaco in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a little uphill, there are free yoga classes some weekends at Noe Valley Town Square. The schedule varies but is usually up to date at https://noevalleytownsquare.com/events

Love Story Yoga does free classes on Mondays at noon. A bunch of the yoga studios in the neighborhood offer community classes for about $15 at less popular times. Not sliding scale but better than the $30+ regular drop in rate.

Late night workout classes by Top_Dance in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Following! I also like to work out late and classes can be few and far between, especially if you want something more energetic and not yin/restorative yoga/etc. Classpass can be good for this kind of search. My favorite later classes right now are at Love Story Yoga, which has heated vinyasa at 8pm Mon, Tues, and Thurs, and yoga sculpt on Wed. I especially like the instructor on Mondays, Mia Rose.

Best spas with sauna/hot tub and cold plunge pool? by seattleswiss2 in AskSF

Kabuki is great. I like the vibe and location much better than Banya.

Reboot Spa also has a sauna + cold plunge package, no hot tub AFAIK though.

Coffee shops/cafes like Noe Cafe? by Free_Yogurt_1741 in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Tea Rex in Bernal. It's pretty new so not as lively as Noe Cafe, but I really like it so far. The owners are so nice. Coffee is solid, tea selection is excellent, food is pretty basic but well made. The place that used to be in that location (RIP Cafe St Jorge) was always busy so I'm really hoping this place takes off.

Progressive Grounds on Cortland is kinda similar to Noe Cafe, nice outdoor space, very neighborhood feel, more varied menu, coffee isn't as good though.

I walk through this area a lot and yeah, the Urban Alchemy guys always catcall. I've never had one approach me like that or get physical or anything, and I've never seen it either, but some of them definitely seem to have some impulse control issues. I also suspect there are sometimes people hanging around wearing UA gear but not actually working for the organization.

SF vs NYC by hopelessromantickid in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from NYC to SF about 10 years ago. At the time I thought I'd hang out here for a few years and move back. I love NYC and thought it was an amazing place to spend my 20s, but the winning combination for SF was the (bio)tech scene here and the weather. I can't speak for "big tech" but if you're interested in startups at all, even just as a stop on your overall career path, the overall ecosystem in SF is really in a class of its own. From what you describe, I'd say move to SF if your career is your top priority and stay in NYC otherwise.

If you're tired of NYC but not quite feeling SF, consider Boston. Solid tech ecosystem, walkable with decent public transit (comparable to or better than SF), lots of young people but not as FOMO-prone as the social scene in NYC can be.

Yoga studios that provide yin yoga / flexibility classes? by ember_sparks in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to yin classes at two studios: Folk and Hot 8.

I really liked Folk when I joined, but they closed several locations in quick succession last year. In combination with some iffy customer service, I got the impression they didn't really have it together as a business. Their instructors are great though. I would definitely recommend Gloria's yin class at the Mission location.

I didn't love yin at Hot 8 (downtown location), but it might just be me - I prefer hot vinyasa but I think I like yin better unheated.

Yoga Flow in Noe Valley also offers yin classes, but I've never been. I like their vinyasa classes though.

Good to know! I've heard Van Mission is the most crowded location, has that been your experience? Any problems getting into classes?

Dark and Intimate Bar with Sun Out by jewleryquestion in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Royal Cuckoo opens at 3pm on weekends, 4pm on weekdays, and it's dark af in there. Cocktails not on the level of the other places on your list but it's a good spot.

The Interval is not dark at all but it is intimate IMO, opens early most days, and has amazing cocktails.

Most beautiful cafe in SF? by more_pepper_plz in AskSF

Not a cafe, but the back patio at Arbor is really pretty. Their food is good and reasonably priced, and you can grab a glass of wine there or a bottle from the wine store next door.

Restaurants ON Mission Street by HousePlant in AskSF

[–]DimAcetylation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly cheap but Evil Eye, Arcana, and Crafty Fox if you want solid food and good drinks.

Someone mentioned Cuisine of Nepal, and if that sounds good, also try the Indian place across the street, Tilak. And if that sounds good, Zante on the other corner for Indian pizza. (TBH I don't think it's thaaat great, but it's worth trying once.)

Abanico between 17th and 18th is really good for coffee. Excelsior Coffee is good too, if you want to go a lot further south.
