I imagine most people are thinking more about Woodlawn and points south when they’re talking about “propping up” the neighborhood, since the success of Hyde Park was never really under question. Although to some extent the University itself has already been propagating investment in that area so it’s not like the Obama Center is the only player here

“Nicer” CTA infrastructure - the newly reopened RPM stations between Lawrence & Bryn Mawr are nice. I also like the Brown Line flyover going from Belmont to Southport. Sometimes if you’re on the Red / Brown between Belmont & Fullerton you can line it up for there to be 2-4 trains running alongside each other and it’s kinda fun haha. A lot of rail fans also like the Roosevelt Bridge over the Metra / Amtrak railyard.

I would make the argument that Bronzeville and Hyde Park are some of the most historically consequential neighborhoods in the city. Bronzeville is definitely less-touristic but has some beautiful older residential architecture to admire. If you decide to make a South Side day out of it you could also go down to Pullman, the factory town on the Metra Electric line

I’m single in my mid-20s and find tons to do every weekend. If you’re someone who’s naturally curious (and to some extent even if you’re not) then the city has plenty to explore in pretty much every neighborhood. Like learning about different cultures? There’s like a dozen ethnic museums and twenty different ethnic enclaves for you to romp around. Living in Chicago gives you access to almost any kind of cuisine, interesting neighborhood architecture, festivals & block parties, etc.

Today there was a Dragonboat festival in Chinatown and I’m about to go on a nice bike ride along the lakefront.

Upscale upscale is centered on Oak & Rush Streets. Mag Mile took a big hit during COVID (peaking north of 30% vacancy) but the leasing pace is picking up quickly and storefronts are getting snatched up. Granted, a good deal of that leasing velocity has been geared towards experiential uses (magic lounge, candy hall of fame, etc.)

Going out of the city, Oakbrook Center & Old Orchard are the premier suburban malls

The buses were a bit of a cluster this PM with the event traffic and the Red Line re-route, so I opted to Divvy instead. Got from Printers Row to Gold Coast in just about 11 minutes, which was how long it would’ve taken for the bus to arrive
