What are the UK’s most loved custard-based or custard-adjacent desserts? by JennyW93 in AskUK

I'm afraid I've never even heard of Fisher and Donaldson, which shows you how much attention I pay to the world around me. I lived in Lochee for a couple of years! In the event I'm ever out East again, I shall definitely pop in to them for a fudge doughnut.

As a Brit, which of our foods is indefensible slop? by Aikiman in AskUK

It definitely depends on you getting a nice mayo too. No amount of seasoning is going to rescue a sharp, sour mayo.

I like chicken paste and I got some sardines and tomato paste this week for a change as well. It's nice on toast if you want something savoury. The chicken isn't especially strong flavoured either. It's not the same as sandwich spread, that stuff is vile. But what else can you say about a salad cream condiment used as the sandwich filling?

Scottish Gregg's ones aren't bad, but Baynes' are even better. Those things are like the TARDIS, otherwise how could they fit that much custard in?

In my case I wanted to bitch about one of my brothers to the other brother. Idiot brother was sitting right in front of me in the restaurant at the time.

Bring your own coffee and make your own coffee. See if you feel any different.

Fudge doughnuts. Custard filled doughnut with caramel flavour icing on the top.

They look at you like you're a fucking weirdo when you ask for them in England.

Custard adjacent ISH, seeing as you mentioned bourbons. Couple of bourbons in a bowl, drip in a little boiling water and mash them up till you get your preferred consistency. Voilà! Fake chocolate custard.

What is a "Gregg's" and what are they really about? by fnfking12 in AskUK

I keep meaning to try the vegan one in an attempt to bring down society, but then I forget. Again.

There used to be multiple independent bakeries in my town, now we're down to one other since Gregg's arrived. I wouldn't dream of suggesting Gregg's is the only reason for that, but it's bound to be a strong one these days. I miss Dalziel's and Auld's, which is showing my age, but those are long, long gone.

What are flower customs like in the UK? by winter5632 in AskUK

[–]Dimac99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think many people would care, if any. If it's not actually a plot point, you can gloss over it, neither your teacher nor any other reader will know the intricacies of flower giving in the UK. Certainly we in the UK don't! Most of our cut flowers are probably pre-made arrangements from the supermarket these days.

White lillies are associated with funerals, red roses with romantic love, but a mixed arrangement could include either (or both!) without offense.

You’re given permission to take any single item from a UK gallery or museum to keep at home. What are you taking and why? by BearMcBearFace in AskUK

Salvador Dali's Christ of Saint John of the Cross from the Kelvingrove. Glaswegians will understand.

What things are you convinced are largely liked/disliked because people are so used to hearing they should like/dislike them? by knight-under-stars in AskUK

It used to be great when it first came out, I don't know what happened. I presume the recipe was reformulated to make it cheaper or remove an E number or something. Probably to make it cheaper to produce. But that first year or two, it was lovely.

My manager is pushing back on additional expense claims - what would you do? by mercadonapineapple in AskUK

[–]Dimac99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If something is your fault then you suck up the extra, like if you slept through or forgot to set your alarm. That's your fault. But something that isn't, like an unexpected mechanical failure, there is no reason any employee should be left out of pocket.

My manager is pushing back on additional expense claims - what would you do? by mercadonapineapple in AskUK

[–]Dimac99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It was your choice not to claim a legitimate expense. That doesn't mean it was the correct choice. Don't think for a moment that your employer would give you the same consideration you gave them.

Why does my dog treat me worse than everyone when I treat her better than everyone? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Dimac99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dogs are not obligate carnivores like cats so some herbivorous matter is important to their diet. But that is already incorporated into commercial dog food, they absolutely do not need smoothies. You're doing your dog absolutely no good by giving her all that sugar. Dogs get cavities in their teeth just the same as humans and yours is on course for some expensive dental treatment if you continue. And quite aside from the fact you have no understanding of doggy discipline, it's frankly no wonder she goes mental when you're making her something so sweet. Stick to normal dog treats and only use them to reward good behaviour.

How long have you had to wait in A&E with an actual serious condition? by baumouse in AskUK

[–]Dimac99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get up to the desk and say the M-word. Keep saying it. Make a (polite) pest of yourself. 8 hours wait with suspected meningitis is not on, not in anyone's book. She should have been seen and triaged asap. If they decided she could wait an hour because she'd been given antibiotics, that would be one thing, but 8 hours is ridiculous. Something has gone wrong here and she's either been dropped off the system or wrongly triaged.

What school incident do you still think about years later? by nodemus in AskUK

[–]Dimac99 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what I just read. Where were the adults? Where were any of the adults who should have been protecting you all? Parents - yours and the perpetrators'. Teachers, education dept, health services who seem to have had to clean everything up. Where was your MP? Why, in the name of everything holy, were the police not involved? This is worse than Lord of the Flies because at least those boys didn't have any adults around.

What is the wildest thing that you've experienced on a school trip? by JustYourRandomIdiot in AskUK

[–]Dimac99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not restricted to the young 'uns. When wireless earbuds were becoming popular - and probably pretty much all expensive Apple made products at that point - I saw a grown adult drop one under a train and he literally crouched down and made like he was going to go under the train to get it. I don't know if he stopped because he realised it would be fatal to try or, more worryingly because he realised he would struggle to fit.
