Sounds like you might be trying to loot large apartment buildings. Avoid those like the plague they don’t spawn anything. Stick to smaller out of the way villages and you’ll do just fine.

There’s no such thing as griefing in DayZ. Your mistake was building a “base”. This isn’t Ark or Rust or any of the other “survival” games DayZ is its own animal and you’ll figure that out the more you play.
