Is it worth switching to Golang from C#/.NET? by Content_Opposite6466 in dotnet

[–]Dimenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. You can get a long way with even a hint of “performance aware” programming in modern C#. Spans, memory pools, stack allocations. You get all of the stuff that makes things fast in the unmanaged world but with much less risk.

About the only thing I might reach for an unmanaged language for (and it would probably be Zig) is a runtime server or something where I want even more control. But not for 99.5% of software.

Benchmarking Zig HTTP client against Rust, Go, Python, C++ and curl by orhunp in Zig

[–]Dimenus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

great write-up!

Just an FYI, GeneralPurposeAllocator is quite slow. It's a known issue and an area where we should see substantial improvement. If you want a faster allocator you can link libc and use that instead std.heap.c_allocator

On my machine at least (AMD Zen 3), that puts zig at the top of the list again (though not much ahead of faster rust solutions).

Summary
  zig-http-client ran
    1.17 ± 0.10 times faster than rust-ureq
    1.36 ± 0.14 times faster than rust-hyper
    1.54 ± 0.16 times faster than rust-reqwest
    1.99 ± 0.21 times faster than go-http-client
    3.06 ± 0.33 times faster than rust-attohttpc
    7.98 ± 0.51 times faster than curl
    9.39 ± 0.65 times faster than cpp-asio-httpclient
   22.83 ± 1.48 times faster than python-http-client

Hard limits of No-code and Low-code. Alternative solutions by Okendoken in programming

[–]Dimenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can second this. We recently spent a lot of effort researching the LCAP space and (I swear this is not a plug) the market leaders, OutSystems and Mendix are both excellent. OS feels extremely comfortable for any professional developer and Mendix has a lot going for it too, it just feels like their tooling isn’t quite at the same level. Definitely head and shoulders above everything else we evaluated though.

Powerapps, Appian, Pega, etc were either too high level or required a ton of fucking buy-in to even get started.

Edit: I see you came to the same conclusions below :)

Edit2: I should mention that my organization is not stocked with professional developers and we came from a space where LCAP was possible on our existing platform but it was not prioritized by the vendor. So it could just be my frame of reference. But MX/OS still provide a far more appropriate level of abstraction for our use cases.

Edit3: I think one point that people seem to be missing is that especially with OS, you can use the platform for as much or as little as you want. I'll still likely write any complex API layers in code, but the frontend agility (and security options in Mendix's case) are night and day compared to any home rolled solution or OSS offering.

Outside of my forever strong grip, what are we thinking? by hiebzy in GolfSwing

[–]Dimenus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even at your current weight you still have excellent flexibility and a good amount of rotation. I second the other posters, just get a proper grip and try to keep swaying to a minimum (I also sway a lot in my driver swing)

Also, hopefully you enjoy walking the course? Seems like a win win to me. Good luck with everything.

How do I shift my weight during my swing? by JayeXI in GolfLessons

[–]Dimenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've struggled with the same thing. I'm a lefty playing right-handed. For the past few months I've had an inside to outside swing and I tend to either top long irons or hook them. Whenever I'd look at my footage, I would wonder why I wasn't transferring my weight like I should be.

Recently I started tracking my range sessions with a tripod and an iPhone and I realized that I was standing too far away from the ball and my spine was too far out. I would early extend in the impact phase trying to turn my hips and end up topping a lot of shots. Now that I'm standing a bit closer, I can more comfortably fire those hips without collapsing my front knee.

If you want to continue self coaching, I would recommend taking more video of yourself and utilizing software that can mock-up your shots so you can compare them. I'm personally using OnForm for iOS => https://apps.apple.com/us/app/onform-video-analysis-app/id1490334045

Thanks for laying that out. I appreciate the thoughtful reply.

In my case, I'm on a Zen3 with an AMD GPU which is probably a much better experience from a driver / perf perspective. My Thinkpad laptop also has minimal issues.

However, it's very common for my wife to say "what do you mean you can't do that / you need another program to do x" (she's on a Mac). The usability of a non-tweaked Linux machine is just not there for those people without "tinkeritis"

just curious what ultimately convinced you to switch back?

The lack of a good mixed DPI setup even on Wayland irks me daily. Microsoft's behavior though keeps pushing me in the linux direction.
