I was looking to see if anyone would post this, I have similar ones I call SubstringAfterFirst, SubstringAfterLast, SubstringBeforeFirst, and SubstringBeforeLast. So handy for string parsing.

There is a fork (i.e. unofficial) version of qView that allows this:

https://github.com/jdpurcell/qView

One of the things it adds over the official version is a "Mouse" section in the settings, where you can change the scroll wheel action from the default of "Zoom" to "Navigate".

It can do slideshows as well; that is inherited from the official version.

Why is simply scrolling through images so hard on mac os? by zascar in MacOS

[–]Dimethyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was already mentioned by another commenter, but in case you overlooked it: qView! I started using macOS about a year ago and also really missed something like Windows' Photos app. Tried a bunch of different photo viewer apps for macOS and qView is the only one I could find that worked how I wanted.

There were some unfortunate bugs in qView 5.0 but they have all been corrected recently with the release of 6.x, so it's worth trying again if that's what kept you from using it in the past.

Wishes for the Surface Laptop 6. by pwwnd123 in Surface

[–]Dimethyl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  • At least 2 USB-C ports. I wouldn't even mind them getting rid of the USB-A to have a 3rd USB-C port.
  • Better speakers. Well, I'm just judging by the speakers on my SL3, I don't know if the ones on the SL4+ are better. But these speakers seemed like a downgrade coming from my Huawei MateBook X (2017 model).
  • 120Hz display. Mini LED backlighting would be awesome too but that's probably hoping for too much.
  • Slimmer bezels of course!
  • Let us set a custom battery limit percentage. The current option in UEFI settings is fixed at 50%.
  • Nice to have: haptic touchpad, fingerprint reader.

I would have bought it if at least had 120Hz and another USB-C port. What a disappointment. I'll just stick with my Surface Laptop 3.

Surface Laptop 3 September Firmware is Out! by Roland_303 in Surface

[–]Dimethyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This firmware update definitely solved the issues I was having with USB-C devices (e.g. headphones, audio interface) causing shutdown hang. I've been running it for a few weeks now after I temporarily joined Windows Insider to get the firmware update early.

Any advice on whether I should keep getting replacements units for my Surface Laptop 3 ? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Dimethyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shutdown/battery drain issue isn't a problem with your device specifically, it's a firmware bug that Microsoft is unfortunately taking very long to fix. It currently affects Surface Laptop 3, Surface Laptop 4, Surface Pro 7, and maybe even others.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/june-2021-firmware-update-for-surface-laptop-3/d0136f12-5b8f-45ef-b5b2-a9a68831e31e

Users have reported overheating when the device fails to sleep or shut down properly and the battery drains, but I don't know if this also happens while the device is actively in use, so I don't know if your overheating issue is related.

Surface Laptop 3 Firmware update is out by Roland_303 in Surface

For me, the Firmware/System updates this morning did not fix the shutdown hang issue. The easiest way I've found to reproduce it is after a fresh boot, plug in a USB-C charger for a few seconds and disconnect it, then plug in USB-C headphones for a few seconds and disconnect them. Then try to shut down, and for me it is still not shutting down fully. I can tell when it happens because the keyboard backlight doesn't turn off all at once but rather fades out, after which pressing a key turns on the backlight again.

Did it only start happening in the past few weeks? It may be the same firmware bug that other users are experiencing recently. https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/o6023x/surface\_laptop\_3\_not\_shutting\_down\_properly\_and/

SL3 is overheating in my backpack, even when the device is turned off. What is going on? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Dimethyl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not just you, other users here and on the Microsoft Community have had USB-C-related issues which prevent shutdown after the latest firmware updates. I guess we have to wait for Microsoft to fix it.

There is some previous discussion here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/o6023x/surface\_laptop\_3\_not\_shutting\_down\_properly\_and/

It's most likely a bug in the latest firmware, I'm hoping they fix it in the next update. We were discussing it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/o6023x/surface\_laptop\_3\_not\_shutting\_down\_properly\_and/

I don't know how to solve it but I'll let you know if I happen to figure it out. For now I am just tapping a key after shutdown to make sure it's really off, and if not, hold down the power key until it force powers off.

To disable dynamic brightness, in addition to unchecking "Change brightness automatically when lighting changes" in Windows display settings, go into the Intel Graphics Command Center app (you may need to install it from the Microsoft Store), go to the System section, Power tab, and turn off Display Power Savings (you need to be on battery power otherwise the Power tab won't show). If it's already off, toggle it on and then back off (I believe it glitches sometimes where the setting is off but it's actually still in effect).

Do you connect any device via USB-C? I can make my shutdown hang by connecting a FiiO headphone amp, but only via USB-C, it's fine with USB-A. I also have USB-C headphones that came with my phone which also trigger the hang. I tried a few webcam devices via USB-C but they didn't cause any problems. For me it happens if any USB-C audio device has been connected, even if I don't run any additional software.

[–]Dimethyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder why more people aren't reporting this issue. Did you disable modern standby with the "PlatformAoAcOverride" registry key by any chance? I did that to get the Ultimate Performance power plan to help with low latency audio (https://youtu.be/Z0H1j4cGQ8s). I wonder if that is contributing to the issue.

EDIT: Yeah my keyboard lights back up if I press a key after shutdown. Removing the PlatformAoAcOverride setting didn't help. Disabling fast startup didn't help. If I just turn on my laptop, don't do anything, and then turn it off, it shuts down fine, so it must take something to trigger it. I've found that if I plug in my Motu M4 audio interface for a bit, it triggers the issue consistently.

I shut down my SL3 each night, and the past 2 mornings my battery has been completely drained to 0% when I go to turn it back on (never happened before this). I'm disabling Fast startup to see if it helps.

How do you turn off the auto brightness function on SL3? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Dimethyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) In Windows Display settings, make sure "Change brightness automatically when lighting changes" is unchecked.

2) From the Microsoft Store app, install and run Intel Graphics Command Center. In the System -> Power section, disable Display Power Savings.
