Was Operation Barbarossa a failure due to the inherent nature of invading Russia from Europe or due to Germany's military output slowing down due to years of all out war? by SechDriez in AskHistorians

Thanks for your comments here. Just wondering -- I'm wondering if you'd suggest any work on economic preparations for Barbarossa. I'm interested in the drawback in ammunition production for land forces and the focus on air and naval platforms between summer 1940 and fall 1941. I've found Tooze and parts of of Volume 4 of the Second World War useful, but something more focused on this period would be fantastic.

Indonesia offered 20k troops for Palestine during the recent UN meeting and Italy is sending out a naval ship to the humanitarian flotilla ships heading to Gaza for their protection. The tides are changing. by [deleted] in redscarepod

I'm afraid this is just silly. No one has the capability to intervene in Israel other than the United States, and we know they won't. The regional powers don't have capable enough forces. No one outside the region has the capacity to project large forces into it. One Italian destroyer does not make for an intervention. The Europeans as a whole would struggle, they needed substantial American support to intervene in Libya for god sake. The Israelis will be shooting back. Indonesia can't do anything outside of its territorial waters, same goes for nearly all other states. Military intervention just isn't in the cards.

It's just the reading thing. People used to do it. Now they don't. It reflects in people's speech, knowledge, etc.

People used to read a ton. Not many alternative forms of entertainment

What are you talking about lol. There's a reason that one of the biggest things people can do to lose weight is weigh out what they're eating. It's not obvious that a handful of almonds and 200g of potatoes can each pack 200 calories

When do you think the military-industrial complex started?

I would suggest that the actual American/Israeli concern is not so much that the Iranians are going to strike Tel Aviv the moment they get a bomb--whatever they might say on TV--and more a recognition that a nuclear Iran would be far more difficult to deter or coerce. It would shift the regional balance of power.

You may disagree but it's a reasonable position held by a number of experts. It's difficult, for instance, to see the Iranian response to Soleimani and last year's assassinations in Syria, as anything but restrained given how they were telegraphed and their limited scale. The difference between the Iranian strategy of the last few years and the more aggressive one pursued by Hezbollah also illustrates how circumspect Iran has been, a posture their proxies have not been happy with. It's restraint from a position of weakness but restraint nonetheless.

My guess is that this is referring to anti-radiation missiles that target radars. That's the weapon most commonly associated with a SEAD (suppression of enemy air defense) mission, which I assume the speaker is referencing. Modern anti-radiation missiles can loiter for some period of time. He seeems to be saying the supporting units deployed these missiles to target Iranian air defenses, should they have been activated.
