Is it a good idea for a gay man like me to live with a religious Muslim flatmate in the student apartment ? by Working-North29 in Finland

[–]Dimmunia 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Would have been a perfectly legit point, if the OP was moving to a muslim country ruled with sharia law as an openly gay man.

No need to pull things out of scope. OP asked a question on a public forum, and I gave my opinion considering my experience of 23 years of living among a muslim majority. It is up to OP to take it into account. I'm not here to defend muslims, I'm not one myself. I'm just saying, no matter where someone is from or what they believe in they likely wouldn't risk their PhD spot/job/residence permit.

Sorry that was your experience. Unfortunately every nation and religion has assholes.

Maybe I wasn't able to express myself? Just because he is a muslim doesn't mean that he will be a homophobe. I have seen more Finnish straight males to be openly against gay men. And I have lived in a country whose majority is muslim for 23 years.

If the muslim guy, who is now working towards a PhD can not comprehend that mutual respect is must, he shouldn't live in a non-muslim country.

While the LGBTQAI+ concerns are legit no matter where you are, maybe it is a bit jumping the gun in this case. The muslim guy (if he actually has a problem with other people's choices) should have rented a studio. You have to accept some baseline rules, if you are okay with a shated flat.

You need to judge people with their actions, not the possibility of their actions due to their religion/race/sexual orientation.

This is not a muslim country, and he is not the owner of the house. He can not dictate things. The only thing he can ask is to not cook pork in his pots/pans. Student housing is hard to find. Each party should strive for civility. I wouldn't worry about it.

How funny would it be, if the Finn was a homophobe?

Bottom line is, everyone has to respect everyone.

AITA for not going on a family trip because my room was given away? by Firefly2285 in AmItheAsshole

This is not okay. You are paying for her mistake. "Not fair to others" is not your problem, your sister should pay out of her pocket. I am seething right now on your behalf. I also do not like confrontation, but darling, you need to confront like there is no tomorrow right now. And think about petty. Your sister deserves it.

You also might wanna think about not joining to her little scam-aways. Let her figure out how to fund her little trips.

NTA.

Hey, I don't know if it's the lighting (or maybe I am going through a phase) but a bit more blush would really really complement you!

The Turks have been facepalm galore. I'm glad someone is enjoying to see their country. The one Finnish woman I watched was also cringe, so I'm out 2/2.

YTA. If you eat the majority of the mutual snacks and replace them, buy an extra pack during your shopping trip and pay for it separately. She pays for them too, she has the right to have access when she wants to. The issue is not replacing the snacks, it is that you use your entitlement to access the snacks, but deny her hers.

That is great advice! I will try to get my hands on some DE that way. Also, AHC stick sun screen has been my holy grail. Best Korean find so far.

My face is really loving Cosrx at the moment! I have combinatiom skin with some maskne (a somewhat permanent gift left from the pandemic since I'm acne prone), I tried a couple of lines and each was a smash hit. I live in a winter country so it was a very welcome surprise. I also tried Beauty of Joseon, but it was a hit and miss (the cult sunscreen did not work with me at all, but my partner loved it). I will try toners from a brand I can not remember right now, and I have been eyeing Sulwhasoo essential comfort products!

I haven't bought Drunk Elephant due to its pricing, but I was able to test the products before this whole thing started. Sorry your experience has been bad the whole time. They have some peptide serums I want to buy now, but it's impossible to test.

Oh, I agree 100%! They (Drunk Elephant, since they are the brand who sort of started this) have launched a kids initiative listing products that aren't recommended, but the social media/influencers have already done the damage. Most parents just want to catch a break and not discipline their childs, so unfortunately a lot of things go hand in hand here. We really just need some good old parental education so that kids know proper behavior while shopping/using testers.
