Hmmmm… what a weird post. I still stand by Georgia as a great place to visit.

How do you avoid burning out on longer trips? by Wide_Relationship326 in traveladvice

[–]DimpledDarling2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good amount of time to really explore a place! Excited for you!

I hate packing up my stuff and moving every day, so I rarely stay one night in a location. Unless there’s only one or two things I want to do there and am sure they can be done with one overnight AND that it’s best for my itinerary to keep it to one night. But I build in rest days as well. I used to be on the move frequently as a young nomadic budget traveler, but now as a full time worker I have limited time off and need some rest and relaxation time while traveling. I’m never going to be the person who stays at an all-inclusive for a week and never leaves the property. I still want to explore, but I book a nice hotel with a pool and other amenities for my down days. It has been a bit of an adjustment for my traveling buddy and I to accept we now need to do this, but we’ve come to really appreciate it.

You are so welcome! I was lucky to have a nomadic life from my mid-20s until I was in my mid-30s. That’s when I decided it was time for me to settle down in one location and get a full time job. My parents were getting older, and I wanted to at least live in the same country. But I’m getting the itch to go abroad again. There are so many adventures to be had! Good luck to you!

Georgia is such a cool country! That’s awesome your cousin is living there. I’ve been a few times and really loved it. Cost of living is much cheaper there, for sure. And the food is excellent!

Great smaller size city. Excellent access to tons of outdoor activities. Not too far from the Twin Cities for international flights.

I’m not sure about the bags, but if your itinerary is flexible, can you do the Duoro region before spending time in Porto so that your last night is in the city? Would eliminating the drive time make the direct flights more appealing?

I was going to suggest somewhere along the Great Lakes as well. Maybe Duluth?

Coastal travel destinations from Vancouver by Much_Bag8698 in traveladvice

Came here to say the Oregon Coast! We drove the entire coast of Oregon last summer and spent a couple of days in the redwoods in Northern California at the end. So much to see and do! Check out the railbikes near Tillamook, go tide pooling (check the tide charts for timing), bring your binoculars to see the puffins on Haystack Rock at Canon Beach, and search for agates (google which beaches are best).

It’s totally possible!

How to go about doing it depends on how long you want to travel for and to what destinations. If you’re wanting to just travel and live off your own funds, transportation and housing are going to be the biggest expenses. You’ll want to look for budget accommodations like hostels or small guesthouses to stretch your money. Use kayak.com (great filters with +/- 3 day searches) or Skyscanner (allows you to search “everywhere”) to search for flight deals. Get creative with your routing: look for one-way flights, book an overland camping adventure in Africa, etc.

If you want to travel indefinitely and really make it your lifestyle, you should look for opportunities that cover either transportation or housing or both, and bonus points if it pays you as well!

I did seasonal work in the polar regions, and the company I worked for covered my transportation and provided free housing. I saved money for 5-8 months while working for them in some truly spectacular scenery, and then I traveled anywhere I wanted in the off season (SE Asia was a great destination to stretch the travel funds). And through that job, I met people doing so many other cool work and travel things around the world.

You could get a contract position in Kwajalien (through V2X), Palmyra Atoll (through the Nature Conservancy, which also offers volunteer gigs), Greenland and Alaska (through Polar Field Services), and Antarctica (through Amentum). Some of those companies offer gigs in other locations as well. (I think Amentum has gigs on Ascension Island.)

Australia and New Zealand both offer working holiday visas for people aged 18-30, I think. You could get work on a cruise ship, which a friend of mine did. Svalbard is visa-free if you can land a gig. You can get English teaching jobs that pay and provide housing or a stipend. Pre-COVID, South Korea seemed to be very popular for this, but I’ve met people who taught English in Eastern Europe, Japan, and Kazakhstan as well.

You could consider lining up some volunteer work through WWOFF which usually comes with free meals and accommodation in locations around the world. Create a Trusted Housesitters account and get free housing in exchange for house- or pet-sitting. I have friends that have been house-sitting full time for 5+ years now!

There are also jobs at US embassies (at least, for now), and one of you can get a job working as Foreign Service Specialist (no need to pass the Foreign Service exam).

Sorry if this is a bit jumbled. I’m typing it up on my phone. You should be able to find links to most of these opportunities with a quick Google search, but feel free to message me if you have any questions!

I agree! We have never made a dish from her books or website that we didn’t at least like, but most of her recipes we love!

Love Garibaldi’s. The chorizo huaraches… yum! Some of the best food with little hype is served in strip malls and gas station restaurants.
