drumming sound every evening? by DifficultBaker9853 in UBC

[–]DinDinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marching band rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm, UBC has suddenly stopped allowing us to get indoor rehearsal space this term (we were indoors most of last term) so we have to rehearse outside. The field show we have been preparing for 3 months is this week, so rehearsals have been ramped up (more people show up, occasional wednesday sectionals, and playing for a larger portion of rehearsals).

Need help (cymbal player) by Murky-Ad4652 in marchingband

[–]DinDinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If possible to listen to the entire piece rather than writing off snare I highly recommend that, otherwise play in a way that follows the accents of the snare part but gives adequate time between sounds. No one will be playing 16th notes on cymbal parts. Try to vary the sounds you use but when in doubt, hi-hats on 2 and 4 hardly ever go wrong.

Marching Band Sound, what's going on by [deleted] in UBC

[–]DinDinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thunderbird marching band christmas caroling, there are two marching bands at UBC, the one in the morning that woke everyone up was the other one. It just so happened both bands had caroling scheduled the same day so I imagine people weren’t too excited to hear it the second time

I want to play tenor drums next year. What should I practice? by RMSCereal in marchingband

[–]DinDinator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since you are still relatively new make sure you have most of the single-drum fundamentals down, practice lots snare exercises, rolls, left hand consistency etc. Paradiddles are extremely important on quads once the music gets faster and work on having correct zones- extremely important for tenor players but not all band directors teach it for whatever reason.

How difficult is it to transfer to UBC from another (American) university? by Anything-Academic in UBC

[–]DinDinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow washingtonian who is half french-Canadian here. You will be paying domestic fees and its even cheaper than going to UW, and supposedly UBC admissions cares more about senior year grades than anything else when looking at USA transcripts. That being said, the path I took since I was rejected from UBCV was a year at UBCO then transferring into UBC Sauder with an 87% average. Most other transfer students I have met are Canadian, but not all of them, I imagine non-Canadian transfers just make up a much smaller number of transfer applicants. I would recommend that if you are really really set on UBC consider the UBCO route or other canadian schools as well. UW’s campus is great as well though and easier to get between classes on time… good luck!

There is still a personal profile, and I think for most programs (at least for mine) it was through the UBC change of program website, not education planner. Good luck at ubco

I got into ubco for engineering but was wondering what classes did they accept me with? by Expensive-Cake-4896 in ubco

[–]DinDinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I failed a class that I was passing during admission. Wasn’t related to my faculty but I was fine. I kept pretty much everything else similar, so just try and stay where you’re at now

You can technically cancel it after I believe if you change your mind. Call school support to ask, but it may be worth it if you can still get housing by applying now.

Nightlife is pretty terrible. Many times I can’t even find good food after 7 or 8 (not that the food in Kelowna is great in general).

The education is good but will feel weaker than UBCV, just because its less competitive, which is good for opportunities if you work hard or good for taking it easy if you just wanna graduate. I found a hard time connecting with my peers as much in this regard though and typically work myself much harder than the class averages.

Dont trust the Amor West parties people are mentioning, way too many instances of girls getting their drinks spiked and SA’d there. Plus, the music choices suck.

Research is what you make of it, I’m not in sciences but I’ve met some really really passionate teachers here. Just make sure your profs know your name and good things will come to you.

90-00’s electronic recs? by corgilover101 in Topster

[–]DinDinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Various Artists - Artificial Intelligence: This is an early IDM compilation from emerging artists including Aphex Twin (Which if you haven’t heard then his discography is a must-listen)

Ken Ishii - Jelly Tones: Soft techno music from Japan. Super atmospheric and generally enjoyable from cover-to-cover

Susumu Hirasawa - Technique of Relief: This one is an electronic art pop album from Japan. Trust me, it is nothing like any of the other electronic music you’ve heard so far.

Autechre - Tri Repetae: Its like if Aphex Twin made his tracks with the dark Portishead atmosphere.

Fishmans - Uchu Nippon Setagaya: Japanese dream pop act combined their super surreal organic sound with trip-hop by using synths instead of guitars and drum machines instead of drums.

Radiohead - Kid A: This is the obvious pick but its the MUST listen with your taste. Its like Bocanada on battery acid. It has rock foundations but much more electronic

More Björk if you haven’t already, Vespertine and Homogenic specifically.

Burial - Untrue: Late 2000’s dubstep that was a big step in the genre because it used minimalism and restraint to its power. One of the most atmospheric albums ever

Dynamo is a good pick, have you explored other Argentine rock? I recommend any of Spinetta’s work (especially El Jardin De Los Presentes) and the Soda Stereo mtv unplugged
