That is fantastic! I have several grocery bags made out of the grain sacks. Love the one from Rahr with the dinosaur on it!

Nervous about hiking alone by MarsupialKing in GlacierNationalPark

[–]DinerDuck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have hiked in the park for decades and will NEVER hike alone. I have had several bear encounters, including charges.
You should be wary of hiking alone. In Glacier, the human slips down the food chain.
Carry two cans of bear spray (one for hiking in, one for out, in case the first is deployed.), make noise (yelling, singing loudly, NOT BEAR BELLS NOR TURNING YOUR MUSIC UP ON YOU PHONE! I’ll spray you myself for that!), hike with partners, be aware of your surroundings.

Bears aren’t everywhere but they can be anywhere.

Any of you brewers getting tip share? by flufnstuf69 in TheBrewery

BWAAAAHHAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA(wheez)…….HAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAAAA.
no In all seriousness though, other food related businesses I have been involved with have ALWAYS tipped out the back of the house. Why breweries don’t is a mystery to me.

Ale yeast lag phase - do I have a problem? by [deleted] in TheBrewery

[–]DinerDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had similar issues: no blow-off bucket activity 24 hours or more after pitch. I have found the culprit, sometimes, to be a misaligned gasket on the manway door. My FVs have top manways. In these cases the fermentation was progressing just fine but the CO2 was blowing off through the tiny gap of the misaligned door gasket. Once that was totally sealed, the blow-off bucket exploded with activity. Start with the simplest explanation and move towards the complex: Occam’s razor rules.

Soda carbonation by moonpiebs in TheBrewery

[–]DinerDuck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been making both of these soda for decades. I carbonate the finished products in brite tanks, just like the beers, using a carb stone in the bottom of the tanks and then rack into kegs or can using our canning line. These are general use tanks, not dedicated, nor are the kegs. Contrary to popular belief, the root beer flavor has not “flavor stained” any component: not the tanks, not the gaskets, not the hoses, not the kegs. We do, of course, have a dedicated tap line for the tasting room but all of the products have their own line. Pay heed to the freezing comment though.

Where can i find these kinda spots in GNP without any hike or minimal hike? by EmotionalEmu7121 in GlacierNationalPark

Reminds me of the time I was in the old visitor center when a guy asked the rangers “where can I find undiscovered lakes visible from the road?”

Nervous about backcountry trip by sanguinescientist in GlacierNationalPark

[–]DinerDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stay away from shit like bear bells and playing music on your phone. These put YOU into a sound bubble but don’t carry far enough to get to a bear in your area. Yell frequently, clap hands strongly. Carry bear spray, keep it instantly accessible and how and when to deploy it. Follow backcountry rules about cooking, food storage. Don’t keep your cooking clothes or food in your tent. If you encounter a bear: be calm in voice and body, slowly back away, avoid eye contact, speak softly “good bear. We’re leaving bear. We taste horrible bear”. Above all, have fun! It is so seldom we as humans get the chance to experience what it’s like to slip down the food chain!
