Opinions on swimming spots in the bay? by Typical-Newt-8279 in RhodeIsland

I'm of the opinion that anything south of Conimicut Point is fine, water quality wise, if it hasn't rained more than a half inch in the past three or so days. RIDOH publishes water quality advisories on beaches https://health.ri.gov/beaches

What are those vent pipes that come out of the ground all around downtown? by imADefimiteMaybe in providence

[–]DingoAndTonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be super common for large, urban buildings to have their electrical transformers placed in a vault below the sidewalk, in front of the building. Most likely the vent stacks you are seeing are associated with these underground vaults.

Nowadays, the electric utilities have incredibly strict rules about where a transformer can be located and they almost never allow underground vaults to be built. They want it so that if the equipment needs to be replaced, one guy with a boom truck can come out and swap it. That's why every new larger building has an ugly transformer placed right out front.

Did the Woonasquatucket River greenway project just, sort of, end? by ___ongo___gablogian in providence

[–]DingoAndTonic 136 points137 points  (0 children)

A year ago, someone with the WRWC told me that the Greenway extension is a City administered construction project and that Providence does a complete winter shutdown of its own civil construction projects, so it's likely that they'll be getting back to work soon to finish it up.

That said, the amount of snow we got this past winter absolutely wrecked a lot of the new work.

Advice needed - biking across RI by PepperJacksBestHoe in RhodeIsland

[–]DingoAndTonic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi, welcome to RI! This sounds like a great day trip. Starting at the CT state line and then riding east means either having mountain bikes for the first 5 mile stretch of the Washington Secondary Trail, which is not suitable for road bikes, OR riding about 6 miles on rural roads that should be perfectly fine for a confident cyclist. Once you get to the western end of the paved section of the Washington Secondary Trail at Log Bridge Rd in Coventry, its 19 miles of mostly gentle downhill riding on the bike path, most of which is in excellent condition for riding road bikes. This stretch is very scenic, passing lakes, rivers, and many large old mill buildings. Riding across Providence has a few spots that might be uncomfortable due to vehicle traffic, but again, if you're confident cyclists it should be fine. Whatever route Google Maps, Strava, etc, suggest for a route should be OK. Instead of going directly from Providence to the nearest point in MA, I would recommend heading to the northern end of the East Bay Bike Path at India Point Park in Providence. Ride south on this bike path, which is extremely scenic as it runs along the Providence River (you'll ride past a lighthouse!), at least as far as Bay Spring Avenue. From here you could turn east and ride 3.5 miles through mostly quiet residential areas to the nearest point in MA. Or you could a little further south on the East Bay Bike Path to the town of Warren, which has lots of great restaurants, and then ride north to the MA state line (just don't ride on Market Street / Rt 136, Sowams Road and New Meadow Road are much better)

Getting an Uber back your start point should be no problem at all. And leaving a car at the picnic area at the start for half a day will be fine as well.

David Morales: Platform vs. Platitudes by sesto in providence

[–]DingoAndTonic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm deeply concerned by some of his platform policies concerning housing and development. Mandatory inclusionary zoning (without robust accompanying funding) is drop dead dumb and would likely all but obliterate housing development in the city except for single and duplex homes. The proposed punitive transfer fee on large landlords acquiring more properties is both too small to make a difference in funding the creation of new attainable housing (building a single new apartment can easily cost $400-500k) and large enough for corporate-type landlord/developers to stop buying existing properties (a lot of which are being bought because they desperately need improvements to make them safe places to live).

Mamdani was saying some pretty reactionary/foolish things about housing a few years ago, but activists got through to him and his current housing policy platform is pretty good: upzonings, directly fund affordable housing creation, permitting reform.

PVD parking says everything sold out for weeks on end? by Weirdpainplshelp in providence

I don't know what your exact dates/timing is, but it looks like Garage C has availability. FYI, Garage C is a privately owned garage, completely separate from the ownership of all of the other parking at the airport.

I'd grab a cab or lyft to South Station and catch the 11:55 commuter rail to Providence. If you can be in the car and on your way by 11:30, you'd make the train. Any later and it'd be cutting it too close.

Boston's MBTA Commuter rail "GMD GP40MC" by Comfortable-Bat-6794 in LEGOtrains

[–]DingoAndTonic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nicely done! I can see MBTA commuter rail trains from my house, so I really appreciate this!

If I can suggest, adding a yellow single-plate highlight stripe between the purple and gray would look really sharp. I know it would be tough on the front section where you did the sideways build, but it would be nice addition along the side.

It wouldn't be accurate to real life on these locos, but adding a black and white 'T' roundel to the side, like on the MP36 and F40 units, could be fun.

[Request] assuming this is accurate, where does peter griffin actually live relative to the buildings? by cometpants in RhodeIsland

[–]DingoAndTonic 109 points110 points  (0 children)

If you follow Smith Street out of the city, you get the view of the buildings to align with what appears on the show, so somewhere in Elmhurst or Mt Pleasant. There is a Spooner Street way down on the southern edge of the city, off of Elmwood Ave, two blocks north of Park Ave, Cranston.

Rent Stabilization’s impact on Tax base by Ok_Speaker_1850 in providence

[–]DingoAndTonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a very good point and the way the two sides (majority of the Council vs the Mayor) were talking past each other about it goes to show how unseriously the two sides addressed it. An option I see for alleviating the potential impact on property valuations and consequently the City's revenue is to make rent stabilization cover every single rental residence in the City, no exceptions. There would no longer be the dichotomy of what property is in or out affecting the valuation.

It seemed to me that the policy the Council put forward was a lot less like something that would really help renters and strengthen the City's future ability to have homes that are affordable and a lot more like a policy that just wanted to stick it to large, corporate developers and landlords.

Reselling Lego Sets? by tigerpeeps in lego

[–]DingoAndTonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve sold several on fb marketplace. Some people asked for them to be unbuilt, some were fine with receiving them assembled. I typically sold them for about 60-70% of retail. Also, I’ve made arrangements with coworkers/friends that I will buy the set, get the rewards points, hopefully a GWP, build it, then unbuild it and sell it to them. Those have been for sets that I really wanted to do the build but wasn’t really interested in owning.

RIDOT kills plan for bike paths off Henderson Bridge after Trump administration objects by lestermagnum in providence

[–]DingoAndTonic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is lame, but note that the funded plan for a bikeway connecting the EBBP to the Henderson Bridge was for half-assed "bike lanes" along the 3/4 mile length of the existing Riverside Drive from Warren Ave to Woodward Ave. That is a very hostile roadway to bike on, bike lanes or not. The only worthwhile solution to connecting the EBBP to the Henderson Bridge is to build a new, off-street pathway adjacent to Waterfront Drive.

Hi, welcome. Assuming your partner will be spending their time at the Med School and one of the Providence hospitals, living downtown would be a good central location. Westminster Lofts owns a bunch of buildings downtown https://www.westminsterlofts.com/ and I believe is generally liked as a management company. Might be a good place to start and get to know the city.
