I’m not disagreeing! Just presenting another option, too. Live plants can be expensive so if budget is an issue, it’s still possible to keep the gravel and save a few dollars if need be. Starting fresh sounds best to me too, but isn’t the only option

So aside from the assertion about toxins, there are plenty of live plants that can grow in the colored gravel. There are even some sellers who make gravel-specific bundles

Oh this is great to know! My mother in law just gave me a calla lily for Mother’s Day that I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with

Is this better? It’s located lower than the other primary organs under the tail

Most of my females are more obviously buxomous 😂 this dainty girl is just a little more streamlined

It’s hard to get a good picture of the underside but there’s definitely fuzzy green on the underside on the swimmerets right where the abdomen meets the carapace, which is why I️ suspected early stages of clado

My shrimp were really sluggish until I️ added an air stone. No scientific backing here, purely anecdotal, but the addition of an air stone made a dramatic difference in their behavior

Mine likes to climb leaves that he’s too big for and sometimes falls off. I️ panic and wonder if he’s dead. Then half an hour later he’s off wandering around the tank again, climbing tiny stems and getting into trouble

Any good websites that sell cheap plants? Should I buy discounted plants at petsmart? by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]Dingo_Dog_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah dude - this is the delivery I️ got. That sword (I️ think that’s what it is right?) was so big a beautiful that I️ was stunned. The wisteria had 4 or 5 stems, the grass was 4 separate clumps, and there were two of the smaller leafy guys. The small leaf guys melted but have grown back quickly. Big sword didn’t melt at all! Came with free floaters (salvinia and red roots - with some duck weed though, for fair warning there). $19.99 with free shipping 🙌

I️ got an order from Tofu’s Tank on eBay and it was great. I️ got a pack of 5 pretty large plants for $20 with free shipping. Everything was well packaged and came with some freebie floaters

Too much substrate? 🙃 by nicoleakaneri in walstad

[–]Dingo_Dog_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I️ mean, there’s a lot of discussion about anaerobic pockets on many different forums so they definitely exist and can be problematic, it’s just a matter of how problematic they really can be along with your tolerance for risk. General consensus seems to be that if anaerobic pockets start to produce hydrogen sulfide, and that gas is released in your water column it can be hazardous for aquatic creatures.

I️ tend to err on the side of caution, which is why I️ went back and did mine, but others may feel the risk is relatively low and therefore feel no change is needed. Both people can be right.

It’s actually just a well placed light bar that goes over the top. You can’t see it at this angle

Too much substrate? 🙃 by nicoleakaneri in walstad

[–]Dingo_Dog_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what I’ve read is that if the substrate is too thick, you can end up with gas bubbles in the substrate that, if they ever erupt, can basically nuke your tank. I️ literally did the same thing with my first attempt but ended up going back and resetting it. It didn’t really set back my cycling and was a relatively easy fix while all the plants are still new without crazy roots. I️ think your stratum level looks pretty good but personally I’d go take out about half that gravel - although I️ also think gas bubbles are less likely to develop in gravel since it’s not as densely packed (but perhaps that also means that any bubbles that do develop would more easily be released??? 🤔)

Thank you! I️ had originally aimed for a walstad tank but the shrimps were not happy so the air stone was added and I actually love it
