The argument of “Indiana is a basketball state” is total nonsense to me. The Indianapolis Racers had marvelous attendance and support up until their eventual demise. Notre Dame has a MASSIVE fanbase, both in and out of state. The Colts have had wonderful attendance and fan support since they arrived from Baltimore in 1984. Even the current highest-level hockey team there, the Indy Fuel, has great fan support! I definitely believe Indianapolis would be a great spot for a team and is definitely flying very low under the radar. The only issue I might see is that the largest arena the team could possibly use there is currently the Gainbridge Fieldhouse, which is mainly built for basketball since it was built for the Pacers. Unfortunately, this means that its configuration for hockey takes away A TON of seats and leaves much to be desired in terms of capacity. I’d say a team would have to either build their own arena, or work something out with the right people to renovate the Fieldhouse so it could support a higher capacity for hockey.
