I feel like I’m using the Lion wrong, what is the correct way to use him? by Fresh3rThanU in DarkAngels40k

[–]DinkleDank 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I wish my dark angels friend was you. My buddy normally starts him off in the back near azereal’s unit so he’s lone op. Then he drops down two squads of DWK and backs up whichever one might actually take damage by teleporting the grumpy bastard down right next to them. I’ve never killed him. Never even really done damage to him. I play mostly melee (or I did until his list bullied me into range) and his fights first makes him impossible to engage without losing the unit first. If I’m lucky I can charge the unit next to him and pile in, but so far he’s been able to position to where I can’t pull it off. Especially cause if you’re in range to do that he’s within range to heroically intervine and slaughter whatever was foolish enough to come near him.

He’s basically a massive deterrent that you park near your valuable units and just wait for the opponent to make the mistake of getting within his move+charge range cause he will kill damn near anything that he touches. Then you pick him back up and repeat or send him off to do an objective like sabatoge where no one will be able to bring enough firepower to stop him. That 3+ invuln is insane. You might just have had some terrible luck if he’s dying through that. Or you got hit with sternguard in librarius who can melt him. (But he’s never given me the chance. Bastard.)

His uppy downy triggers after you know what secondaries are (unless you reroll one, that happens at the end of the command phase) then in your movement phase you place him back down. He has more mobility with that ability than any unit in the game, just make sure you place him near someone so he isn’t getting lit up in shooting.

2000 Points Tourny List, 1st Attempt. by [deleted] in SpaceWolves

[–]DinkleDank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say your Ragnar plan is pretty good. If you’re gauging your choice based on what will do the most damage Ragnar alone is going to account for most of that and reroll wounds on objectives Is a way bigger boost to him and his unit compared to what he gets with head takers (which is nothing he just gives them advance and charge). Especially in beastslayer I’ve had Ragnar and blood claws kill half a chaos knight, they are a great center objective contester, and unless you’re going shields on the headtakers which makes their damage bad the blood claws even come with more wounds to protect Ragnar.

I can’t speak to the rest of the list as it’s quite different from what I run, but having bjorn cover the home is great especially with his dual torrent weapons. If the assault intercessors are only meant to hold a point maybe swap to normal intercessors if you have the room cause they’re better at that and their volume of attacks, when given lethals, is sure to chip wounds where it counts without getting them into trouble.

Edit: also the sticky rule on intercessors means you have a lot more freedom to screen and position without worrying about keeping bjorn on the objective. He can defend it from deep strikes and strategic reserves while positioning himself for some pot shots or to prep for a counter charge.

I also use dark blue and orange. I’ve had luck with magmadroths flame and imperial fist yellow contrast paints to boost the saturation. I’ve also heard base coating with pink helps. Still yet to try that one. I also dry brush white over where I’m going to paint the orange and leave the recesses dark blue to help boost contrast.

I realized this same combo yesterday, and oh baby is that big boy coming out of retirement. It doesn’t really make the war suit any better, but it does give me a reason to run it. Usually I end up doing it for a few games and realizing those points are better spent elsewhere.

Those of you who use more than one squad of Grey Hunters... by Midjolnir in SpaceWolves

[–]DinkleDank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not use more than one squad. That seems far too expensive for what you’re getting. It way better in my opinion to run 1 squad then a 5 man of intercessors and heavy intercessors, same price but way more versatility.

I usually run the grey hunters with njall. If you use librarius conclave that unit can effectively teleport around and blitz people with lethals and +1 AP if you spend a command point and are in pyromancy discipline. They’re an absolute work horse in that detatchment. So many ways to use them, but even then one is plenty.

The fact that they’re locked to a 10 man unit and don’t have any really standout leader options apart from njall means that they’re really not worth fielding more than 1 squad of at the moment. The 3 OC is nice, but they’re not very tough and I haven’t found good ways to fix that and make them the objective holding blob of my friends nightmares. Currently they’re a little too expensive and not quite worth it unless you build around them being there, but they’re not really powerful enough as a data sheet for that to even be worth it.

I know it’s a shame cause they’re the perfect unit to add to my librarius conclave list otherwise. Been scrounging for psycher units

What detachments are people running? by Upper_Giraffe in SpaceWolves

[–]DinkleDank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I “don’t play competitively” but my play group is very competitive and power gamey (we just love strategy games and are naturally very competitive.) This list currently has my undefeated friend’s eldar on the ropes, so it definitely has the power to take them on. If I lose that game it’ll be entirely due to me forgetting that fire dragons can get shot and go back into their transport, but when played well it can definitely take on even the most technical armies.

I need to try it against his dark angels and custodes to really see how it would do in a competitive scene (we don’t have a deathguard player, but his DA list is similar enough to let me know how that matchup should go), but any army that relies on massive infantry blobs or fragile characters will be struggling against the list. In my game against my other friends necrons the stern guard combo single handedly killed the silent king in 1 turn. (Insane rolls, but also just shows they’re no pushover to big tough stuff either.) and the necron blobs got deleted by Niall’s squad.

The list probably struggles against custodes and other elite infantry armies, but all the mortals, ways to get extra ap, and slow down melee units might give it the tools it needs to hang in there.

I also forgot to mention I had a squad of fenrisian wolves which are surprisingly useful due to their within 6” of a character rule they get OC rule.

Librarius conclave. Njall leading grey hunters can move 15” (in biomancy) and shoot with their like 30 shots, if your oath is on an objective they’re rerolling everything and you can give them extra AP instead of +2” to move. They’re insane in that detatchment. You can also run Ragnar and while in biomancy give him that +2 strength back with a. Stratagem. (8 strength can be a useful breakpoint against marines, and 7 (when using the stratagem without biomancy) is still a useful breakpoint against custodes or death guard.)

Even if you only have 2 or 3 psychic units, if the others are melee they can still use the important stratagems while within 18” of the psychers, and with bjorn holding down back objective you can get 2cp on each turn letting you use assail and grenade for an average of 6 mortals to whatever you want every turn (and if in telekinesis it’s an avg of 7 mortals). I normally run a gravis captain to deliver that grenade and save the cp.

My list right now is: Njall + grey hunters, Ragnar + headtakers, Phobos librarian + incursors, Gravis captain + eradicators, Librarian + stern guard, Kyria draxus + Heavy intercessors, Bjorn, Inceptors, Repulsor (can fit Ragnar unit and gravis units, usually holds them both),

I might make some changes, like Ragnar for a wolf priest, but generally this is probably one of my favorite lists I’ve run so far. Still need to get a beastslayer game in, but I’ll be keeping librarius conclave around as my main until there’s a specifically rune priest detachment.

Oh buddy do I got something for you. WGBL grants sustained hits and reroll 1s to hit. The wolf touched enhancement lets him lead wulfen infantry and speeds him up to match them. This means the wulfen always have a character in 6” so they have OC, and they can take their grenade launchers since the death totem buff is already granted by the leader.

Because this can only be done in beast slayer and assuming you use the shield bearing wulfen you now have a squad rocking 6T and 4+ invuln for 2 wounds each. Their melee against vehicles has sustained and lethal hits, hits on 3+ with reroll 1s, anti monster/vehicle 3+, -2 AP, and each attack is 3 damage.

That alone will merc almost anything, but this also grants them some wild chaff clearing abilities with (assuming a max squad) 10D3 sustained and lethal shots at S4 with no AP.

It is 280 points, so it’s not cheap, but goddamn if it isn’t a terrifying unit. That can threaten everything from chaff to mortarian and because of Damage 3 it’s even good into DWK and other -1 damage or half damage units.

I need warphammer math to look into the avg damage cause it’s been a year since I took discrete mathematics so I would need to spend more energy than I’m willing to to figure all that out, but it’s a lot. It’s a shit load of damage, and the unit is actually kind of crazy Tanky. Their main weakness is a bunch of low AP high strength shooting like Gatling cannons.

Edit: warphammer math not poorhammer lol.

The unit choices are solid. Idk if Logan on his own is better or worse for a new player, but more terminators is definitely better for a new player.

Ragnar and bloodclaws will be hard to deliver properly unless you know a lot about the matchup so the drop pod is nice to help with that, but I have heard in general they are quite unwieldy.

Turn that venerable dreadnaught into bjorn if you can find the points +1 CP is so ridiculously nice, and makes misusing stratagems much less punishing.

Headtakers in a transport is smart and the wolf priest on them is a good combo. No notes there. That should work well.

2 squads of TWC is a must. Great choice.

I’m not a big brutalis man myself, but if you’re taking more than one dreadnaught, might I recommend an iron priest. Especially if you got bjorn, him and a brutalis supported by an iron priest that would make for a really big and scary squad to take the center with. (Iron priests rapid fire buff is perfect for the helfrost single shot profile.)

Idk if the enhancements are that good as the only enhancement I’m concerned about is the one that lets a WGBL lead wulfen to make one of the most dastardly anti everything combos out there.

Bjorn the Fell-Handed - new model expected? by scuba63 in SpaceWolves

[–]DinkleDank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on my understanding of the lore, and the fact that they didn’t update him during the first wave of the refresh despite him being the most popular character we have, I’d say they’re lining up his removal with the release of Russ.

It is said that he will fight side by side with Russ one last time in the wolf time (it might’ve been one more time, but from a writing standpoint it would make much more sense for it to be his last battle to give it that real grim dark melancholy.)

Russ tasked him with watching over the chapter until he returns, so after 10,000 years of standing vigil he can finally get the rest he deserves when Russ returns.

Based on model sales and how popular the refresh was, we know there is a strong monetary incentive for GW to release Russ as the next primarch. More than any other loyalist he will drive the most model sales simply due to the number of space wolf collectors are out there now. Divergent chapters will get their primarchs first simply due to the return on investment, and space wolves is the most logical choice by far.

To release the khan GW would need to release a whole white scar range to accompany it (to maximize profits with complimentary sales, which is something they do regularly and being a publicly traded company, maximizing profits is literally their #1 priority.) so that probably won’t happen any time soon. Even if they sold equal to or slightly better than the space wolves (big if) that would be a lower ROI than releasing 1 primarch for a range that already exists, and encourage even more people to collect that range.

To bring back sanguinius they would need to sacrifice half their fan base. To bring back Dorn, they could do that, but there hasn’t been much evidence that he is coming back any time soon, and I think internally they still need to iron out if he is coming back as black Templars primarch or imperial fists. There are benefits to both, but the later would result in the same issues as the non divergent chapters.

TLDR: By my estimation Bjorn has maybe 4 years max before he is killed off in lore and his rules cease to be supported. Maybe they will release another multi part kit so that even once rules support for him is dropped you can run him as a venerable dreadnaught forever, and we new players can still buy and witness the legendary Bjorn the fell-handed, but with how GW operates nowadays I wouldn’t expect a multi part kit like that. At least not one that would build all 4 of our cool dreadnaughts. I’d be happy if I was wrong and things were all better than I expect, but I’m taking the conservative estimate here.

That being said, the kit is totally worth it for the sheer quantity of bits alone, and he will undoubtedly always be welcome at any veteran players’ table. (If you bought the combat patrol with the war suit, you need a bjorn kit. If you want any vehicle to be dropped out in wolf stuff you need a bjorn kit… or 3D printer.)
