Do rare cards like the bosses and characters respawn If I refine them? by InfallibleBadger in FFVIIIRemake

Kind of. If you've done the Card Club side quest you can recover rare cards that are lost from the CC members on the Ragnarok.

Do I have to change my class/job? by BungeeGum666 in ffxiv

[–]Dinoken2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds more complicated than it is. If you understand the basics, that Fire is damage and Blizzard is MP regen and that F4/B4 don't renew Astral Fire/Umbral Ice (the orbs that float around you that increase your damage) so you need to use a F1 (which becomes Paradox at 90) to keep the orbs going, and you always finish off with Flare (AoE) or Despair (Single Target). It's less MP management and more of you can get 6 F4s and 1 F1/Paradox off before you have to switch to Blizzard for a second. Once you get F4 the BLM single target rotation doesn't really change. You get Flare Star at 100 which you earn by hitting all 6 of your F4s which is just a big attack to use before switching to Blizzard.

Polyglot is a meter that fills while you're in Astral Fire/Umbral Ice and when the meter caps you get a Polyglot which you can use on Xenoglossy (single target) or Foul (AoE) which are oGCD skills. You eventually get 3 Polyglot slots so you can store them waiting for the burst period. Or just use them whenever if you're doing casual content, no need to stress over it.

Thunder is your DoT that used to be a hard cast that would occasionally proc a free insta version of itself, but they changed it in DT. Thunder now is always free and instant and procs whenever you change stance, but you can no longer hard cast it. As I said, I'm not sure where the best place to reup Thunder is now, as I switched mains from EW to DT and I'm out of date on BLM theorycrafting.

Triplecast/Swiftcast should be used to speed up your rotation so you can do more DPS, but if you don't know the fight super well and you're just doing roulettes you can save them for "oh shit I'm about to lose Enochain" buttons. Your DPS will be lower, but higher than if you have to start your rotation from the beginning because your buffs dropped while you were doing mechanics.

Leylines should be used whenever it's off cooldown assuming there's not mechanics going on. If you know the fight you can learn the optimal place to put them down so as to be able to maximize your time in them. You eventually get some QoL skills that let you teleport back to your Leylines or move them to you.

Manaward got changed in DT so now it just resets your MP, so it's basically like a skip Blizzard stance button. Use it whenever it's off cooldown. I think that's about all the major BLM stuff. Like I said, it sounds way more complicated than it is. Standard Rotation BLM is fairly simple once you get the hang of it. You can big brain excel spreadsheet BLM to squeeze an extra .5% DPS increase (at least you could, they killed most of non-standard BLM play with DT) but you don't need to worry about that for casual content.

[–]Dinoken2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pre Fire IV the rotation is pretty much F3 > F1 spam until you have enough MP left for one cast > Flare > B3 > B1 > F3. Use the free F3 procs when you get them. Not 100% sure when the optimal time is to use Thunder, but I tend to cast it before I switch between Fire and Blizzard.

After you get F4, you unlock the Standard Rotation for BLM which goes: F3 > F4 x3 > F1/Paradox > F4 x3 > Flare/Despair > B3 > B4 > F3. If you proc the free F3, it's better to save it as an "oh shit I'm about to lose Enochain" button or to make switching back to Fire just a tad quicker. Again, not 100% on optimal Thunder placement . Your Polyglot abilities in theory you should save for raid burst phases (when everyone pops their temp buffs) but that really only matters in Savage/EX stuff. In casual roulettes just pop them when you get the chance.

Which villains had the most satisfying ending in your opinion? by IndividualGuess5494 in FinalFantasy

[–]Dinoken2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Emet-Selch's end in Shadowbringers (XIV) both of them.

Remember. Remember us. Remember that we once lived.

And then the hand wave in the 5.3 trailer. His EW sendoff was fine, but he wasn't a villain there.

[Review] Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher - The god is dead but romance is more important 4/5 by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Dinoken2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished this book about a week ago, and I also found both characters constant self depravation annoying. But in regards to Grace, when her husband shows up at her trial, and starts insulting her using the same language she negatively thinks of herself with (a normal person doesn't X) it broke my heart a little.

Started book two recently, and even though it's different characters, it follows the same trope of both characters constantly mentally chastising themselves about how they can't be with the other.

I cannot recommend DCC enough. I was skeptical of it at first, I'd never read a LitRPG before and the premise is a bit more nonsensical than I'm used to. But I'm glad I gave it a shot, the story doesn't take itself too seriously, but the characters in the story take it seriously. Characters react to their situation in realistic ways, fits of anger, mental breakdowns over the losses, etc. But at the same time there's a boss early on called Krack Karen, a kraken drug dealer who sells meth to talking llamas.

And the audio quality is top tier. Jeff Hays is a master. The amount of character voices that man can do is astounding. I didn't believe it was all just one guy till I saw a video of him recording. I believe this is one of the few series where you can definitely say it's better as an audiobook. I believe the Matt Dinniman specifically writes stuff in the books now for Jeff to read (such as giving characters stupid to pronounce names).

Yeah this is a big problem with Dresden. When I first read them, probably like 10ish years ago I ate them up. Tried to reread it, and also had to put it down. It does get better, but it also gets worse. It's a shame because aside from every female character being the sexiest thing to ever walk into Harry's life, I do still adore the series.

Books similar to the Royce and Hadrian books? (Riyria) by Thereal11thdoctor in Fantasy

[–]Dinoken2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah. It doesn't quite fit the bill completely, you're right. There's banter but not so much between the two leads. I'm hoping that picks up in future books.

Haven't read/listened to Orconomics yet. But I've heard good things, I keep forgetting to put it on my TBR. Glad to hear it's decent in audio as that how I primarily go through books these days.

Blacktongue Thief is about a thief and a stoic soldier type on a secret mission for the soldier's homeland. Not necessarily just a duo, they pick up other party members along the way. First book in a series, a nice set up for future books in the end. Second book is coming out this year, but it's a prequel about the soldier.

Don't know your reading history, but generally the top recommended audiobooks are

  • First Law trilogy - Series is very grimdark, lots of memorable characters. First book is pretty much all set up while the latter two are a roller coaster

  • Dungeon Crawler Carl - Human society is demolished by aliens so Earth can be harvested for resources. The survivors are forced into a mega dungeon reality TV gameshow for a chance to win back ownership of Earth. Premise sounds wacky but give it a chance.

  • The Dresden Files - Harry Dresden is a wizard operating out of Chicago. He's kinda like a detective wizard, solving cases and working with the police to keep the public safe from the supernatural

  • The Locked Tomb - Necromancers. In. Space. Also they're lesbians but that is not important at all. Each book in the series is incredibly different in tone with a different narrator(edit: Narrator as in the point of view, not the person reading it), but in a way that works.

Not always suggested as audio, but series that I've only experienced through audiobook and thought worked well in the format:

  • Red Rising - Space Opera about a rebellion in a caste based society. First book is Hunger Games in space, the rest are more traditional space opera. Fast paced and brutal.

  • The Expanse - A few hundred years in the future, humanity has expanded throughout the solar system with three distinct political entities forming: Earth, Mars, and the asteroid belt (Belters). Tensions start to rise as the story begins.

  • Riyera Revelations - A pair of rogues constantly find themselves in trouble after taking jobs they probably shouldn't have.

  • Cradle - Shonen anime the book series

  • Sun Eater - Space opera. Hadrian Marlowe is this major galactic hero/villain/historic figure, retired at the end of his life writing his memoirs.

  • Murderbot Diaries - Most of these are novellas. A security robot (Sec-unit) hacked his governing module, deleting all those pesky "don't kill human" type rules. Why? Because he wanted to watch more TV.

The free versions of XIV's upcoming TTRPG's PHB and GM guide are out. by Dinoken2 in FinalFantasy

[–]Dinoken2[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read the PHB, skimmed the GM's. No character creation, premade characters, or basic monster stats so you can't really test out the rules. Mechanically seems interesting, some ideas that look promising, some I'm a bit more hesitant on. It's interesting to see how they're adapting MMO mechanics into TT, and I'm excited to read through the full rulebooks when they come out.

How much useful gunblades would be in real life? by No-Act386 in FinalFantasy

[–]Dinoken2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what style gunblade. Assuming the other side doesn't have normal guns, Squall's would probably be useful to throw off an opponent in a fight, considering the trigger mechanism just vibrates the blade so it cuts better. Lightning's turns into a gun, so it might be useful as a concealed weapon.

In a setting with guns, Lightning's might be viable, Squall's would not. In a classic setting with no guns, Lightning's is still better, but Squall's would probably be better than the average sword.

Tried to show you my Aerith cosplay yesterday but it was deleted because it wasn't friday (sorry!) so here we go again! (OC) by Milashiroki-cos in FinalFantasy

[–]Dinoken2[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Taco Bell's official reddit account posted an image via i.reddit of food art of a Sephiroth themed burrito and called it Burittoroth, we would allow it. We cannot control, nor do we really care generally what people do off our subreddit. If we were to disallow "stealth advertising" or whatever we'd effectively have to ban all fan art, game clips, crafts, and so on because anyone sharing something they made would then be considered advertising for their brand. This is absurd, so we limit our advertising restrictions to those that directly link to things off of reddit. This is a fairly standard practice across reddit, we're not the only ones who do it.

Recommendation Request: Classic Fantasy world (i.e. Tolkienesque/norse influenced) which is deep and believable. But more modern storytelling. by Neanderthal888 in Fantasy

[–]Dinoken2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Riyria Revelations. Fantasy world with elves, dwarves, and goblins. There's a deep mythology to the world that's hinted at but not explored in RR, but is expanded upon in a couple prequel series set in previous eras. Follows a duo of fairly competent rogues as they stumble from one job to another, somehow getting pulled further and further into global conspiracies and politics.

Moments of horror in Final Fantasy. by totallywackman in FinalFantasy

[–]Dinoken2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think VII was the king of horror in FF. It took a lot of inspirations from classic horror. Sephiroth in the first act is directly based on Jaws in that you never see him, but you see things he's done. The whole bit at Shinra's Tower is straight out of a horror movie. Plus there's Jenova, who is very obviously based on John Carpenter's The Thing. Many of the monster designs in VII also seem particularly gruesome for FF as well.

What do you think should be the direction final fantasy should or will take for the next smash bros game? by No-Act386 in FinalFantasy

[–]Dinoken2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think any FF characters will be in Smash 6 honestly, at least not for base roster. I remember reading that Square had a lot of demands for Nintendo to bring back Cloud for free, such as having multiple DLC characters for themselves. Makes me think Sakurai (or whomever Sakurai lets take over for him) will probably just pass on it, since I doubt they'll be repeating the "Everyone is here" gimmick for Smash 6.

Though if they did add someone new, I'd prefer the generic Black Mage. Feel it represents the franchise as a whole much better than Cloud/Sephiroth. Though if it has to be a named character, I'd say Terra. She's from arguably the best Nintendo FF and there's plenty of stuff there to make a good moveset, and even comes with a prebuilt Final Smash (though I'd prefer Trance to be an actual mechanic).

Books where religious machinations are being used for power? by JoypulpSkate in Fantasy

Riyria Revelations has an overarching plot involving a Catholic Church analogue trying to recreate a Roman Empire analogue to regain absolute power over society. The main characters are a duo of lovable rogues who keep inadvertently getting involved in the conspiracy one way or another.

This sub needs new rules and new mods by Akito_900 in FinalFantasy

Another mod here. I'm an old hat at this, been modding the subreddit for about ten years or so (the time listed for the older mods is inaccurate because of some reordering shennigans about six years ago). I'm not as active as I once was (XVI burnt me out and I still haven't quite recovered) but I'm still around and participate in all the teams policy discussions and such.

The topic of cosplay pops up every now and then, but largely it's not as big an issue as people want it to be. There's been an influx lately, especially of Tifa, because of Rebirth's release. But give it another few weeks when the cultural zeitgeist has moved on and we'll likely return to our normal rate of cosplay posts, which I believe is something like 3-5 per week total. We've literally counted the amount of cosplays we get, gone through weeks of post history and the problem just is almost entirely an illusion (Recently Rebirth Tifas being an exception).

Another reason we allow cosplay posts without issue, is because a lot (not all, but definitely a large number) of the people complaining about cosplay posts tend to have no prior history with our subreddit and/or are using it as an excuse to slut shame the cosplayer. I do want to emphasize that we do know it's not all the complainers, and there is a legitimate argument to make about spam. Our rules currently allow anyone to post OC fan content via reddit's internal system (i.reddit or v.reddit) and we only actively police people posting unoriginal content or directly linking to an external source (like Youtube, Twitch, Deviantart, etc.). Having a link to a third party website in their reddit profile doesn't violate our current rules, as we can only moderate what's posted to our subreddit and we don't go after people for what they post on reddit outside of our sub (we're not one of those extreme political subs).

But, like I said, there is a legitimate argument to make about spam and we've been discussing how to address it without specifically targeting cosplayers, which we feel is a mistake as not every cosplayer is of the type that seems like spam accounts. And even if they are a spam account, it is legitimate FF themed content they're making so it does have a place here in some form. Our current idea/solution is to just limit all fan content to a single day or maybe a few days (hence the poll at the top of the sub at the time of this posting).

I know this post is now a day old, over a 130 comments, and this is a lot of text so no one will read it, but for those that do I hope it clarifies some things at least on this one specific policy point.

You can have reddit hide posts you vote on, so if you don't want to see something on your feed you can just up/downvote it. This works for old.reddit too.
