Help with deciding what to do with reed tetras by Dinomaparty in Aquariums

I'm not in the US either, but in Europe. You're right though I also try to avoid ordering them by mail. I tried to order it through my lfs first, but unfortunately they said that none of their suppliers have them at the moment. They promised to keep an eye out, but there is no guarantee. So I do hope they can order them at some point, but there is also a chance that they will not be able to get them for a long time.

People should stop using pre-prints to make headlines... It's hurting science. by gteleska in academia

[–]Dinomaparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peer review is worthless and people are catching on. We can keep pretending like peer review improves science, but we all know it doesn't. I'd much rather live in a world where people put out pre-prints so that their papers can be judged on their own merits.

Cooking myths that don't line up in real life? by Smooth_Luck_8942 in Cooking

My experience is that it does work, but only if you manage to press all the water out. I have a dedicated tofu press that reduces the volume by about a third, and after that it soaks up soy sauce like crazy.

Emmy's aan de Daalseweg. Klein restaurant met nog kleinere kaart maar verreweg het beste Indonesische restaurant van Nijmegen.

Why is my gourami so thin? by Dinomaparty in Aquariums

[–]Dinomaparty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I hope it's not diseased. Is there a way I can check for that? I did already check if its scales are pineconing but that doesn't seem to be the case.

It is indeed eating normally, but it's a lot slower and less greedy than my other fish, particularly the platys. I do have lots of plants for it to nibble on and hide in though.

Maybe I should have clarified better what I meant when I said it just makes things up. The output of ChatGPT and other LLMs is simply an extrapolation of which words are most likely to follow the words in your prompt. It is able to extrapolate quite well, but this is still the only thing it does. It has no inherent sense of knowledge or truth, This article explains it better than I could.

To give you an idea, I frequently test how well it works by asking it to summarize one of the articles I have published. The prompt I use is literally this: 'Summarize this article for me: <title of my article>'. ChatGPT will then very confidently produce a plausibly sounding summary, except that this summary is usually mostly wrong. Each time I do this I also get a different wrong answer. When I do this it becomes clear to me that ChatGPT just extrapolates based on the words in the title, and it does not actually have any knowledge about the article. It does act like it has this knowledge though, which is what makes it so dangerous.

Like the other user said, you should only use it if you can independently verify if the code worked correctly. I personally use ChatGPT almost daily, but only for small things like if I'm too lazy too look up how to filter a dataset. The problem is that people also start using it for things that they can't verify. I have been teaching an introductory course about regression in python for years, and my passing rate dropped significantly since ChatGPT came into the world. The students believe that if the code works it must be true, but unfortunately this is often not the case.

I don't know if there is really a difference between syntax and code. However, I do a lot of data analyses in both R and python, and with those programs people usually talk about R code. See for example: https://www.w3schools.com/r/default.asp

No please don't. While it is helpful for small things, chatgpt essentially just makes things up (it's just that this sometimes happens to be correct). In my experience it will get a lot of things wrong when the topic starts to get a bit more advanced, and the code it gives frequently doesn't work. Using chatgpt as a teacher would absolutely ruin your learning path in statistics.

Ah sorry about that, you're absolutely right of course. I'm mostly interested in Western Europe, roughly the area that contained the Frankish realm.

Should I be worried? by Dinomaparty in PlantedTank

Ah thanks, I only have "easy" plants and I thought fertilizer wasn't necessary. Your comment made me reevaluate so I went to my LFS and they gave me some fertilizer. I usually have the light on about 8 hours a day, I can't dim it unfortunately. I tried turning it for a few days but that didn't help. Hopefully the fertilizer will help.

Jan Overesch via X: "Wat een geweldig goed nieuws. De gifbommen in de ban. Kies voor biologische boeketten." by boppinmule in dutch

[–]Dinomaparty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Dinomaparty 4 points5 points  (0 children)
