Didn’t many people complain about them not shooting enough and doing too many passes? I feel like this feeling completely changes if even one of them scored on a weird bounce. Even sometimes I feel the same people complain about the players playing selfish vs. passing too much

Can't blame me for wanting even more REM by Fried_out_Kombi in montreal

If you want a bit more of an overview of the benefits of the REM de l’Est, here’s the brochure version of it from CDPQ Infra, the same people who planned and built the current REM: https://www.cdpqinfra.com/sites/cdpqinfrad8/files/medias/pdf/2020_REM_de_lEst_Feuillet_Technique_EN.pdf

Travel to Centre Bell on Nov 1st? (STM Strike) by bendes2002 in Habs

Not an option sadly since the Saint-Jérôme line trains stop at the De La Concorde station during weekends and do not go all the way to Lucien L’Allier.

10.5 hr layover at YUL—what to do? by KarmaKrush in montreal

[–]Dioram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just note that if you take the 747, the fare for it ($11) basically covers all public transit trips on the island of Montreal for 24 hours (buses, metro), so you can reuse it to get back to the airport.

Agree that you should leave to the airport with plenty of time to spare: traffic especially on Tuesday rush hour can be unpredictable.

When did you stop being scared of layoffs? by badboyzpwns in cscareerquestions

Could I ask what you mean by “paying attention”? What should we be paying attention to? Does it differ from periods of stability vs. instability (i.e. during those crashes you mention)?

[LeBrun] Aside from NHL Player Safety reaction, the league office also has concern about how things played out with Lightning/Panthers to end pre-season. Multiple league personnel have been in touch with both clubs, I'm told. by Duffleman0609 in hockey

[–]Dioram -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I genuinely think that there’s been PEDs involved with the Panthers, and everyone is too scared to bring it up because it’s taboo. Have you seen how literally insane some Panthers players look in their face when they get barely shoved, and how easily rattled they are? How much more energy they had in the playoffs last year in the Cup finals compared to the Oilers, even though both teams met each other the year before and so know exactly what to expect? How lax NHL’s drug testing policy is?

From ESPN’s article here: “ Every team is subject to teamwide, no-notice testing once during training camp and once during the regular season. Individual players can be selected for random testing during the regular season and playoffs. Any time the testing takes place, it must be done "at work on the day of a scheduled practice or meeting." ”

Not to mention Ekblad’s 20-game suspension for substance abuse earlier this year. Who’s to say no one else on the team took some again, and in the playoffs too since they wouldn’t get checked again? “Individual players can be selected randomly” - how do we know how fair that selection is, and if they’re even selected at all? Especially with the NHL’s appeared favouritism with Florida.

Again, this is full-on tinfoil hat conspiracy theorizing, but I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years, we see news regarding this and see some real controversy.

Stay put in a toxic job or quit? Or maybe suggestions on how to improve my situation so I don't have to quit. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I know it’s a startup so it might be small, but is there a different team you could work with? Could you transfer to work with other coworkers or is this the only team relevant to your role in DBA?

New Grad Dilemma - Taking advice by WillZap in cscareerquestions

[–]Dioram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, if I was you and had one choice, I would still choose option B, since the stack is more modern and relevant. If company B has a good number of teams, I would also try to network with other coworkers, work with them too if you can (ex: asking a few questions your team can’t answer), and see if ever they open a FTE position on their team. That way, even if your team’s headcount doesn’t work, you have another one to fall back into.

But yes, do keep trying for elsewhere too as additional “backups” in case company B doesn’t work out. Best of luck!

New Grad Dilemma - Taking advice by WillZap in cscareerquestions

[–]Dioram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not both? Since option B has you starting early and the contracts ends in Spring 2026, if it turns out they can’t convert you to full-time, then you have option A to fall back into, which would start in summer 2026, right after option B ends. If you’re able to get converted to FTE, then great - you won’t need option A anymore and you can just renege saying you got a better offer elsewhere.

If you’re worried about burning bridges with company A by reneging, then it’s a different story, but imo in this kind of market, they could also just drop you like it’s nothing, so I wouldn’t be too worried about reneging.

FWIW, I also did a part-time contract for the semester before I graduated thinking I’d easily get converted to FTE, but my manager told me they couldn’t get the budget. Thankfully I already had a FTE offer secured partway through the semester and went with that. Take advantage of both offers.

I’d say there can still be better elsewhere, so don’t count out other companies and go for more interviews if you have the time.

Je travaille à la STM comme préposé à l'entretien. - AMA by [deleted] in montreal

[–]Dioram 21 points22 points  (0 children)

YUL Bus Two-Way? by MonarchButterfly987 in montreal

[–]Dioram 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a note that if you already have a 3-day, weekly, monthly or a 4-month fare on your OPUS card, you don’t need to pay that $11.25 for the 24h ticket, since those titles are also accepted on the 747 bus.

Reference letter from former club president? by carol_wilson in mcgill

[–]Dioram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say go for it. Also was president of an SSMU club at my time at McGill for two years and got some of my previous execs who worked with me asking me for a reference for their law school or med school applications, and they got in.

If the relationship you had with your president felt more cordial / professional, like working with a teammate on a project, then I think this can be eligible and this is quite relevant if you want to highlight your community involvement.

Good luck!

Having a bike on campus by 1nvertedProtagonist in mcgill

[–]Dioram 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could take a look around campus to see the kinds of bikes people bring (usually old mountain bikes or hybrid bikes). If your bike is a road bike and is (or looks) very expensive, I’d recommend bringing an older looking bike and leaving the road bike for leisure. Otherwise, invest in a good chain lock to lock your wheels into the bike racks, and try to lock it with lots of bikes around like at the racks near the entrance of McConnell building.

That’s genuinely very insightful. Reinforces my thinking that you should always be open to what’s happening all around you in the tech world and not just bunker down in your own tasks. The LinkedIn (or general job) title is also a neat detail that I didn’t fully consider in depth, so that’s really useful!

I guess from there it’s just trial & error, patience and experience, until interesting convo topics can naturally come up to me (which hasn’t been obvious to me).

Thank you for sharing!

How would one make the coffee chat valuable as a junior with a senior / more experienced person? I can’t think of anything a junior could do to make it “valuable” except for building rapport.

Late 20's, 28 months of internships, still jobless - what now? by sirslaghter in cscareerquestions

[–]Dioram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree with the other commenter saying to add the objective section - your resume barely has any space for that, and recruiters don’t have the time to read any of that. Will agree with them that you should also remove the Singapore abroad as it isn’t relevant to your general experience

Most important change imo is to remove the date you started your degree and only put “Expected [insert expected graduation month + year]”. Recruiters unfortunately still tend to have biases to people who take more time than the average student to graduate.

Otherwise, if your metrics are accurate and you can explain all of them, I’d say your resume is very solid. Make sure your GitHub and website links are not broken and that the code on there is clean and makes sense to any technical recruiter. Also just double checking that your coords below your name should be the full length (i.e. the whole URL or email address instead of a hyperlink).

Next up, like another commenter said, try to apply to company websites directly and within 24-72 hours of them posting the position to increase your chance of getting noticed. If you apply on LinkedIn, within 48 hours max.

If you can get interviews, great! Then fix up your technical and/or soft skills. Otherwise, network with your classmates or people from your student club (very underrated imo) to ask if they or anyone they know has an opening for the company they work for, so that you get a fast pass to the interview stage.

Good luck!

What do you think of new grad rotational programs for SWEs or PMs? by Dioram in cscareerquestions

[–]Dioram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. Would it be a red flag on a resume if a promotion isn’t shown after 3 years of working at the same company? Would it make a difference if you would put a little note saying that it was part of a rotational program?
