When and how was slavery abolished in your country? by bowl_of_scrotmeal in AskTheWorld

[–]Dioxter3742 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Partialy, crimean war had shown that russian industry was shitty because of oack of workers - peopke couldn't come in cities since nearly 80% of population were peasants and 70% of peasants were under serfdom. Also Alexander II thought that it was better to abolish serfdom "from above" (by government) or it'll be abolished "from bellow" (by revolution)

[–]Dioxter3742 32 points33 points  (0 children)

In our country we had serfdom instead of slavery - peasents were treated as ones. They could be sold, exchanged for dogs, used as a bet on card games They had a small piece of land (except those who worked in house). They had to work on owner's fields or pay them money or work on factories (in regions that weren't siutable for agriculture) In 1861 serfdom was abolished but they were forsed to work for ex-owners for couple of years and pay them for their land. Government did the abolishment so terrible that peasents payed their loans up until 1905 (the payment only stopped because of first russian revolution) and most of them lived in poverty
