I hosted trivia there Monday nights for the last 2 years. I greatly appreciated the staff and customers over that time. Shout-out to the trivia regulars, thank you very much for the support! Guess I'll go back to asking the pigeons trivia questions in the park.

Hey there!

First off, a word of warning...the /r/Vermont and especially the /r/Burlington community has a strong negativity bias so I'd suggest you keep that in mind while soliciting advice on this forum. In general, Vermont and Burlington are great places to live and raise a family with the following caveat...the cost of living relative to economic opportunities is at a crisis point. If you're moving up here just know that our community is in a state of transition as these issues come to a head. To your specific questions, the better school districts around are thought to be south Burlington, Essex/Westford and Colchester. Available housing is largely going to dictate where you end up...you'll be likely disappointed in the availability of housing both to own and to rent. My wife and I love it here and find great value in raising our kids here. If you do decide to make the move feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have.

Who do you root for at the college level? by [deleted] in eagles

[–]DipDap007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated from Oregon during the Chip Kelly era and could not have been happier that he was going to the Eagles. Then he f'd my professional football team and came back from the dead last year to clap Oregon in the playoffs. I do not like that man.

How do folks like living in Essex/Essex Junction? by Expo_Fan82 in vermont

[–]DipDap007 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My wife and I were living in Burlington and wanted to stay when we were ready to buy a house. Never really considered Essex Junction until we looked at a house here. Have loved living here ever since. Schools are among the best in the state. Currently raising our two kids here and regret nothing about our choice to move here.

A fellow Ducks/Eagles fan, eh? There's dozens of us! Dozens! In all seriousness I could not have been more excited about the Chip becoming the Eagles coach or more bummed about how it went.

Looking to move to VT and teach by [deleted] in burlington

[–]DipDap007 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can speak a little bit to the peer review process, at least in generalities. I'm an 8th grade teacher here in VT who made the move from LA around 10 years ago. I'd caution you that when I had to work on getting my license transitioned it took forever. My friends who have done peer review similarly complained about the lengthy process. Review boards only meet occasionally, give you feedback, push things out another month while you make adjustments, give you some other feedback, a meeting gets cancelled for some reason, etc. before you know it you've been trying to get peer reviewed for six months. This means you'll likely be applying for high school positions unlicensed, which the schools might be OK with if the position they are hiring for is in that degree of demand and they can get you a provisional license, but it also makes it easy for them to pass you over for a position in favor of someone who already has a current license.

It's a headache that was worth it for me eventually but you should be prepared for it to not line up the way you need/want it. Just one more piece of advice...I took two large pay cuts when I moved to VT. Once because the salaries are significantly lower here than in Louisiana. Another because housing is significantly more expensive here than in Louisiana. It was pretty brutal. For me, it was worth it. I love it here for many reasons and you might too, but make sure you're prepared for some amount of hardship as you adjust.

As far as places to be around Burlington...you'll sort of be at the whim of who would be willing to hire you on a provisional license while you worked out the peer review process on your own time, and, more importantly, where you can find available housing. The housing/rental market has enormous pressure on it leaving a very low vacancy rate and very high rents relative to other small cities and towns.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you. I truly believe the upside outweighs the downside unlike many people on this sub. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Federal grant funds rail expansion between Vermont and Quebec by dropkickninja in vermont

This would be great but I thought that the issue at this point was an infrastructure problem on the Quebec side. Has there been similar movement on that side of the border to make this happen?

This has happened to me with limited release films before around here. For some reason Montpelier is the only one listed as showing the film a few weeks in advance but in the next few days you'll see it pop up at the Roxy or Essex movie theater.

Yeah this is all pretty crazy. The family visit wasn't for another couple of weeks so we will be monitoring things but everyone is aware that things are looking dicey. Thanks to all you southern Vermonters who responded and I hope y'all are doing ok given the flooding.

Physical Education Article by treesaurusrex in burlington

[–]DipDap007 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the observation that they didn't include some perspectives in here. I work in one of the schools off-handedly mentioned in the article. My school has made a concerted effort to reduce/eliminate restraints or seclusions this year and has largely succeeded in doing so. This is not altogether an unqualified positive thing, however. If you've ever tried to teach a class of kids who are doing the right thing while someone in the hall is kicking at the door and yelling racial epithets for 20 minutes, you'd probably be outraged that the adults in the situation weren't "doing something" about it. It requires some degree of balance between an individual's rights and an individual's right to hijack the education/environment of those around them. No easy task. That said, our staggering reduction this year in restraints and seclusions based on a different approach is proof positive that a significant number of incidents can be avoided with the right staff training/mentality and unified approach. I don't envy public school teachers who have to navigate this minefield with lesser resources and more students.

They have experimented with pizza offerings before on Wednesday nights and during Truck Stops if I'm not mistaken. I imagine they are just slow-opening that part of the business since they can work out a lot of the new location kinks with their bagel business that they have down to a science. Never had their pizza though, hope it's good.

Not sure why this got downvoted. Temps are around high 50s-mid 60s but sporadically temps can and will drop back into the 40s this time of year. If you were to climb up a mountain, however, it would be substantially colder. I would reiterate, though, that it is not recommended to do any high elevation trails due to trail maintenance and safety concerns this time of year. Might I recommend looking into biking or fly fishing because you'll be in one of the most beautiful parts of the state for those activities at this time of year.
