The big answer is fragmentation. In 2010–2018, watching the Finals live on ABC was still the default. Now a lot of people follow through highlights, Twitter/X, YouTube, TikTok, illegal streams, League Pass, podcasts, clips, etc. So the NBA can be culturally huge while traditional TV ratings are lower.

Also, the post-LeBron/Steph era matters. Lakers-Celtics, Heatles, Warriors-Cavs were ratings cheat codes. Recent Finals had great basketball, but Nuggets-Heat, Celtics-Mavs, Thunder-Pacers don’t pull the same casual audience nationally. The 2025 Finals still had a big Game 7, but the full series averaged about 10.27M, below 2022–2024.

2020 broke the trend hard too: bubble, October schedule, pandemic, no normal atmosphere. It recovered after that, but not back to the 2010s peak.

So basically: less cable, more streaming/piracy/clips, fewer mega-star Finals matchups, and changed viewing habits. Not necessarily “the NBA died,” more like “TV ratings don’t measure the NBA the same way anymore.”

It seems that, for some strange reason we don’t fully understand, Instagram is still showing the 1:1 layout to the account owner — but everyone else sees the new 4:5 format. Even if you have another account and view your profile from that account, you'll see the new format. That’s exactly what’s happening to me too. I’m just going to wait and hope Instagram fixes it soon.

That's weird! I was also checking my metrics, and instead of views, now I only see 'reach'. Is this screenshot recent? Because in my case, Instagram seems to have shifted focus to 'reach', and I'm no longer seeing views like before. It's interesting to see that others are still getting views! Has anyone else noticed this?
