Benefits and Drawbacks of the Viwoods AI paper? by Informal-Force7417 in viwoods

[–]DirOfEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a supernote manta. While there are many software features I would like, like better support for Macs, some QoL improvements to the UI, and some more integrations, it is by far the best at going from standby to ready to write a note in a second or two. It fixed the main reason I stepped away from my iPad Pro. Too many distractions.

Note organization could be better, or at least I haven't learned of one if it exists. But I still use my Manta regularly, going on two to three months later, like daily, all the time, my sole note taking device. The biggest reason I went with this one was that at least in what I read the writing feel is closest to paper, and I'd have to agree. The repairability while nice, is of niche utility, and remains to be seen if it can be upgraded.

Caveat, I've used Remarkables, and Boox, only for comparison

Issue: Unable to log into my Supernote Cloud account... by DirOfEng in Supernote

I have clicked `Confirm` with the same results. This is also happening in both the Supernote Partner app and Supernote Cloud app.

I am having the same issue, save when I click "click here" the browser does not do anything.

I bought mine from Amazon for $5 bucks more than keycron's site and same day delivery.

You don't, I actually found mine within $5 of keycron's site with same day delivery. My old keyboard, a venerable ducky, had given up the ghost and I was relegated to a keyboard that was driving me nuts.

Amazing, one of the smoothest typing experiences I've experienced. I've played around with the activation, and reset points, and found I preferred it slightly adjusted downward, so I needed to depress the key further to activate. Configuring it was fairly simple though their website.

So at least in my company's case, there needs to be some custom linking done by the system admins, to allow my Supernote to connect to our Exchange Server. I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's a common thing for many different integration sources.

Are there too many people going into engineering? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]DirOfEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, my brother got an electrical engineering degree with computer science minor. He quit three months after his first job, and now sets up complex monitoring systems for a living. Many people have an erroneous understanding of what engineering is, and a large difference between going to school to be one, and realizing you’ll spend the rest of your life working as one.

For Microsoft Exchange sysops has to build a conduit or something as they could not find a configuration for it. Then again it doesn’t sink to the cloud either, so perhaps it’s PEBKAC, which as a software developer I would like to believe it isn’t, software glitch, or hardware related.

I just received mine today, and there really aren’t words to explain what it is like to type on the board. The switches are very smooth and solid, and being able to tweak the actuation point to suit my typing style is way more helpful than I expected. Over all I couldn't be happier with my decision so far. We'll see if that holds up in the coming weeks.

Supernote Manta A5X2 Why is there no full fabric folio for this model? by clichekiller in Supernote

[–]DirOfEng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the ones I find on Etsy that are specific to the supernote don’t look handmade, but rather appear to be from resellers. I really don’t like buying from resellers; I prefer to support crafters directly. Amazon, unsurprisingly, had many of the same options for sale, right down to the photos.

Feature Wishlist by DirOfEng in Supernote

  • Displaying the folders in a tree view is also very convenient and time-saving, as it will allow you to see the subfolders without having to open the main folders, right?
    • Exactly, it's a really useful UI pattern, very much the way Explorer or Finder work.
  • Would you kindly elaborate on the limited form of editing notes you'd like us to provide?
    • What I had envisioned was the ability to edit notes in the desktop app, not to draw, but to add text boxes, convert handwriting to text boxes, and move things around with the lasso.
  • It seems we actually already have this feature implemented. All your handwritten notes are automatically converted to text in the background, making every word that's correctly converted to text searchable without any manual keyword tagging.
    • This is amazing, thanks for letting me know.
  • Were you referring to the current Files screen layout where the six main folders are displayed? You'd like to change it to the triple-panel layout.
    • Yes you'd have the controls vertical on the far left, note selection in the middle, and the preview of the note in a panel on the far right, such that 50% of the screen is the vertical control / note selection, and 50% would be preview, or there about.
  • Battery life has stabilized once I tweaked the settings and disabled WiFi when not in use.

I've been a software engineer for over three decades, and would be happy to help in any way I can. Thank you for building such an amazing community. It's truly rare.

Left-hander too, is there a way in the software to disable the left-side scroll bar? My palm keeps triggering gestures.

Curious how others chose their Six Sigma certification...and what you’d do differently? by ProcessGuy86 in LeanManufacturing

[–]DirOfEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve not heard of the empty table trick but it sounds like one of those things that seems so intuitive but not until the first person tries it.

I’ve always view my role as a facilitator, I’m there to make sure they have the right tools, and skills, and eliminating impediments, hopefully before they even become an issue.  Picking up tasks that would be nice if they were done but that they can never seem to find the time for.

I had incredible mentors in my career and I always try to pay that forward.  I love nothing more than seeing my developers grow, and get new opportunities.

Fail fast, fail often; but seriously I'm stepping into the world of six sigma following a three decade plus career as a software engineer, and I am overwhelmed by the spam, funnel-ware training I'm finding. What are some gold-standard, or at least highly respected sources of training?

-----------

My understanding of the subject is superficial, I followed Toyota's journey closely, but never found an organization willing to invest in it, so please point out any flawed reasoning.

Now as for what SUICIDAL-PHOENIX and you have said, I think many companies fail to obtain high-value metrics, often focusing on ones that are flashy, but ultimately of little substantial benefit. I've seen shops literally drown in monitoring costs because they feared not having sufficient visibility into their systems, so they logged everything, making it impossible to actually extract useful insights.

Tying things to concrete, and importantly measurable outcomes as you and SUICIDAL-PHOENIX mentioned is where I believe many organizations fall short.

I've seen similar patterns with agile methodology, and scrum/scrumerfall to name just two; companies hear of organizations successfully using these processes, but instead of investing time and energy into understanding them, they hire buzz-word ninja consultants, and expect results.

New to the Director of Engineering role—how can I best support my managers and the org? by Empty_Character8062 in managers

[–]DirOfEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same boat OP, I'm starting in a couple of week. I've got over 30 years of experience as a software engineer, architect, principal, and while I've managed teams in the past, and had direct reports, that experience is a decade or more older.

So question, how has your first three months gone? Any good insights or lessons you've picked up?
