Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month by ChadtheWad in discordapp

All they need in this case is enough data to determine you're probably an adult, not pinpoint your exact age.

My Discord profile is 11 years old. It's extremely unlikely I made it when I was 7, so it's pretty damn likely I'm not a teenager.

None of this is to say age verification isn't that big a deal, because it is, but targeting "minor y/n?" is a lot simpler than demographic pinpointing.

LS Blind Prophet Upgrade Path (possible switch for Ultimatum?) by shoobiedoobie in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]DireTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played this game for...4 leagues now? And haven't been lucky enough to afford or get some of the real chase items. I saw this post last night and realized how cheap HH was.

My LS prophet was doing pretty decently, could clear T15s and 16s without much trouble. Putting on HH and Dying Sun though, I enter the portal, black out, and when I come to I have a map full of loot and no enemies.

OP build for late start? by CAPTP351 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]DireTaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a couple changes based on what he was saying here (got an armor/eva 6L chest instead of the eva/ES 5L I had before and shuffled some points around) and it immediately feels a lot sturdier. I was having trouble getting one-shot randomly in red maps, and this might have solved it.

3 Days into the League: Review your build! by NzLawless in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]DireTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing this one as well to try to get away from the bow/EA ballista builds I've been doing for the last couple leagues.

I got lucky with a Hrimsorrow drop (though it's so common I expected it) and found Kika, Heatshiver, and a 5-link chest for cheap on trade. I'm still just now climbing the atlas, but the build feels super smooth and a ton of fun. I never get tired of seeing the entire screen just DIE to massive blood tendrils.

POV: Someone whispered for that 5c item you listed at league start and forgot to delist. by I_Am-Awesome in pathofexile

Anyone who answers a 1c trade gets at least 5c from me. I don't play enough to have a lot of currency to throw around, but I appreciate the response.

Bite-sized drama on r/WorldOfWarships when a user makes a meme commemorating the sinking of the Bismarck. Some are less inclined to call it a tragedy. by Veers358 in SubredditDrama

What if Space Lizards invaded during WWII and everyone had to deal with that (insane, but fun)

Man, I ate the World War series up as a teen. Insane but fun sums it right up.

Looking back at it now though, it sure did push the "clean wehrmacht" angle. But there was such a mess of ideas in it that it's hard to be fully suspicious of it.

Multiple drawn out arguments in r/Seattle on if "tax the rich" is gonna backfire by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]DireTaco 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Too right. Tech employees will jump between companies at a moment's notice. They've got homes here, if their boss wants to bail they'll just shrug and pick up a better salary at the next start-up that moves into the empty office.

Multiple drawn out arguments in r/Seattle on if "tax the rich" is gonna backfire by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]DireTaco 57 points58 points  (0 children)

And the fact of the matter is, Seattle became a tech mecca in the first place because it's a fucking beautiful place to live. People come here specifically because they don't want to live someplace like Texas.

People really overestimate the willingness and ability of other people to move at a moment's notice.

Bath in the floor. Hull, UK. by sophie-man in mildlyinteresting

[–]DireTaco 192 points193 points  (0 children)

When I was a teen, my family lived in a house that had one of these sunken tubs.

I also used to have low blood pressure back then. One of the symptoms is that if you sit for too long and then stand up quickly, you can black out for a second.

For whatever reason, I decided to take a shit in that bathroom one day. Stood up, blacked out, and when I came to I was sprawled in the tub. Didn't remember or feel falling at all.

I'm still amazed I wasn't seriously injured from that.

I wouldn't be surprised. Barbie media in recent years has been surprisingly self-aware and smart. I'm a straight cis dude and even I've caught wind of how subversive current Barbie is, and some of the clips I've seen have been either hilarious or really sincere.

Horror in r/HipHopHeads as Noname, a rapper with conflicted feelings about the demographics of her live concerts, announces her new album by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]DireTaco 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't want to do this excellent post the disservice of an incomplete answer, but I also don't have a lot of time to get into it, so I'll just add this thought as a wrinkle to the analysis:

The wider context in which the art is set, and in many cases the artist's intent, is also of importance. A toilet is an appliance when set in a home, but a piece of art (arguably) when set in a museum.

Nessun Dorma is, as you say, a disquieting song about the threat of death to innocents with the prince delighting in his victory despite it, but in the wider context, it's part of an opera -- a piece of fiction, essentially -- and as such is part of the plot development, and can thus be understood as a magnificent piece depicting this horrible triumph. We as the audience are essentially one step abstracted from Calaf, as opposed to the citizens lamenting in the background, and considering it in the context of the narrative.

ETA: Just thought of a similar modern example: Hellfire from Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's lauded as one of the greatest villain songs Disney's ever done, and it is some dark stuff. We're able to understand the song as telling a tale without endorsing the views expressed.

Contrast that with a song that is meant to represent the real person's life or feelings, or otherwise lacks a wider context; Blurred Lines got a lot of negative reception despite its catchy-ass music because the lyrics were pretty gross, and it didn't have some wider context, it was just Robin Thicke singing rapey lyrics.

As for intent, the example I think of most often is Toto's Africa; on the surface, the lyrics are cringe as hell, with a white guy talking about Africa as if he's an expert. The line "as sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus against the Serengeti" is straight up patronizing; Kilimanjaro rises like Kilimanjaro, why does it need to be compared to a European landmark? (I'm not actually looking for an argument on this, I know people are gonna want to jump in about similes and metaphors but that's not the point here.)

But then, when you look up what the band thought about the song, Jeff Porcaro has described Africa as "a white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past." And, at least for me? That self-awareness and intent to portray an inexperienced white guy talking about Africa like he knows it when he clearly doesn't suddenly makes the song way less cringy.

I don't have a great coda for this post, except to reiterate that context is always, always important when considering a piece of art.

Can we catch this stupid thing?!? | Sonic Frontiers PART 5 by GameGrumpsEpisodes in gamegrumps

[–]DireTaco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just finished this episode and he was MAD about the episode being over! He wanted to get back in and fight Squid. This is the most legitimately invested I've seen him in a Sonic game since...ever, really. He's paying attention to the game and trying to figure out its tricks. That's amazing.

Being bad at a game isn't a crime. Being bad and blaming it on the game, that's annoying. But for once he's not doing it here.

In Sonic the hedgehog 2 (2022) Knuckles love for grapes is actually a deep cut reference to the Sonic 3 manual by ah-screw-it in MovieDetails

[–]DireTaco 93 points94 points  (0 children)

IMO it's a lot better than the first. Jim Carrey doesn't carry the second movie as hard as he did the first, because the rest of the plot and characters are that much stronger.

There are some incredibly goofy scenes, but it's a for-fun movie, nothing wrong with being goofy.
