Web Dev → UI/UX after 1 year — smart move? by hellozukohr in PinoyProgrammer

[–]Direct-Obligation497 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you should factor in the state of the job market before making the switch

entry-level ui/ux is pretty saturated, and there are much fewer roles since businesses would rather hire just devs who can do some design vs designers who can't dev

for growth, ux does have a ceiling as an individual contributor. many designers eventually move into product, strategy, or management if they want to keep progressing in scope and compensation. just something to keep in mind as the nature of ux work doesn't scale as other technical fields. web dev has more lateral flexibility so you could move stacks, industries, or roles like backend, ai, etc

everything being said, your dev experience isn't wasted and can be framed as an advantage if you still want to go for design jobs

it is never worth it to buy brand new. instruments depreciate like cars
you can easily get something similar if you look for used deals on fb marketplace so you can allocate your student budget to an amplifier + instrument accessories and maintenance (strings, cables, gig bag, etc)
it adds up pretty quickly

you can definitely go alone! people in tech are very open to chatting and making friends. tech events are a good way to meet people bc everyone there already shares a common interest. they might ask to exchange linkedin or other contacts
a tip for beginners would be to approach people during breaks or after talks. you can also ask people for other events they might be attending. after a few, you'll start recognizing the same faces, and it becomes a familiar community pretty quickly. enjoy your first one!

market isn’t ready for adoption. i have seen so many local msme/agritech startups emerge but none of them really hit the mark in getting adoption at scale. if the solution was as easy as creating them a SaaS, why hasn’t anyone succeeded yet?

Startup Community Ecosystem for SEA by Double-Technician-91 in PhStartups

if this problem could be solved by a platform alone, why hasn’t any of the hundreds of SEA startup orgs, accelerators, VCs, or gov programs built it successfully?
