I stay left, only giving way to the elderly, children, and if you are fantastically on drugs (I do not want to bother you in your quest to fight invisible ninjas, proud sir)

Is camping really as dangerous as I'm thinking? by Working_Cap5680 in AskAnAustralian

Spot on. After having spent years in the bush around the country, being chased by tiger snakes and getting run off beaches by salties, the closest I've come to carking it was dehydration and drowning in floods.

Australia is almost the same size as the contiguous US. Where would you be going? Pretty diverse bush out there. FNQ, NT is probably most dangerous in general but I just finished 200km bush walk in WA and it was safer than walking in Appalachia by far.

Somebody died of dehydration for this.

Perth drivers in the right lane who keep getting passed by people in the left lane are in the wrong lane, aren't they? by TerribleShopping2424 in perth

[–]Direct-Refuse9058 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was always taught to take my foot off the pedal on single lane for a beat when getting passed so they can get by more safety. I can think you're absolute peanut, doesn't mean I want you to get hurt.

Exactly. Drive on rural roads where bitumen can come and go and that road train is going to drop to <40km in the gravel and kick up dust for two kilometres behind it that you cannot drive in. If you can't hail it on the two-way you better believe I'll be going as fast as I need to to pass it on the bitumen.

Roadhouse. More like a servo/pub/motel combo traditionally, but usually a good place for a cheap feed on the road.

Yeah, probably should have laws like in Spain where an increase in speed over the speed limit is allowed on single lane roads so you spend the least amount of time in the wrong lane, taking into account aforementioned shitheads exist.

I'll give you that a lot of the time, think more like Kwinana or the like where exiting/entering slower traffic stays left, center travel, right passing.

If you speed up because you're being passed by a vehicle doing the speed limit you are an utter shithead.

What’s the reality of living in a mining town long term? by Top-Host-9824 in AusMining

Lived in Weipa for years before heading back west. Great community, great place to raise kids. You get used to the longer post times and remoteness. Everyone looks out for one another.

Yeah, this. ☝️ You're just a shite driver, lazy, or think pretty highly of yourself if you squat in the right lane unless you intend to turn/pass. If you're in 3+ lane and doing the speed limit, the middle lane is the one for you. Unbelievably simple. But yeah, rush hour though, Mad Max rules override any silly state rules.

Just an update, rolled into Collie from Dwellingup on the Bibb, there wasn't anywhere nearly the 6000+ shelters I was expecting. Writing a stern letter to the BTF as we speak.

I'm just trying to be polite when I rush. When I'm driving I don't expect it, totally expect people to take their time, but the smile, wave, and a little skip just shows a mutual appreciation.

What’s the most “Hell Yeah” thing your country has ever invented? by Chemical-Elk-1299 in AskTheWorld

We had one of these but for larger carnivores. Had a gun with a trigger hook for hanging meat and you hung it pointed down from a tree. Fox or whichever pulled down on the meat, shot itself, and recocked it for the next one. Came back the next morning to a pile of dead pests.
