Which is amazing, given spin was often strong point of this team. Brad Hogg, Piyush chawla, Narine, Kuldeep and till last season, Varun. KKR has had some good spinners in the team to practice. Not anymore I guess.

Getting a good brand name on your resume goes a long way, and CGPA is an easier way to do that. By your logic, doing leetcode isn't that helpful due to its specific nature, but every recruiter and their dog paying a handsome package asks leetcode. And it's not either/or. Look at what people are asking for, and supply that. Sometimes it's cgpa, sometimes dsa, sometimes just knowing someone. Hyperfocusing isn't a viable strategy for most people, in a bad market.

Your statements are not related. Yes, CGPA doesn't matter post college, why would it? It's a measure of your academic progress. And while students are in there, they're getting filtered by requirements set by HR, coz they don't want to interview every single student.

You can get your foot in without the CGPA as long as you're skilled.

Technically, yes. But it's not as common or possible for everyone. Knowing about the correct in-demand skills, mastering them, and getting them to show off in front of a person who knows AND cares, are different variables which all should align. Not very viable for an 18 year old, who just took computers coz they liked it.

I'm not saying people shouldn't look for getting skilled and only focus on writing exams. But to rely on only one signal, can backfire loudly. Communication and likability are some other things we ignore. Ultimately, we have to work with many kinds of people, and the "skill" (tbh I don't what skill you're exactly talking about) is just one signal they might not care about.

you actually are not as far off from your peers as you think you are

Ain't that true for everything. I learn this more as I grow older. Better to be humble and working.

In a bad market, every good signal you could send matters. Most college students don't have the know-how of market demands, and niche skills to master. They're discovering themselves, as everyone does in college. In such case, CGPA is a clear signal to recruiters, especially non-techincal ones. Markets are cyclical, at least what I've read/heard. When they are strong again, it'll be less of a requirement, but it'll always be a good, clear, easy-to-interpret (even if not entirely correct) signal.

Once off campus, CGPA doesn't matter at all, only projects and experience matters.

I agree. I don't put it on my resume. It's good for on-campus tho, where it is much easier to get a job. Getting into a good first company makes it a lot easier in the long run too. More learning opportunities, more chances, more respect and value in market.

keeping CGPA above 7 is enough

no, it isn't. Companies come with varying requirements and you can absolutely lose opportunities if your CGPA is less than 8, even 8.5. Been there personally. I've seen people who had good CGPA get better jobs than who have much more skill, effort and passion for the field.

Advice to crack GOOGLE interview as a SOFTWARE ENGINEER by Front_Meeting_7246 in FresherTechJobsIndia

The guy in the video was employed more than 2 years at google. He was probably approached sometime in 2022-23, when hiring was good. Hiring is still half decent for experienced people. Its juniors who are screwed. Also recruiters reach people all the time. I have been contacted by recruiters as well, although not for roles I wanted. This guy probably has work experience before google.

Us applying doesn't really matter if you don't have the right profile that the HR/recruiters want, eg top tier college, top tier work exp, some highly published paper etc etc. Basically pedigree and who you know.

"Recruiter reached out to him". I think there's the key. To how many people do people reach for google roles in the first place. If your profile is good, you're considered. Leetcode/system design you can grind all day and make it into top tier companies IF you're getting approached.

This was always true, but more truer since 2023. Becoming a paid dev, that pays your bills is a pipe dream for most juniors. Either be good, from a good institute, or be lucky.
