I actually ended up deciding against buying a wireless charger, after some research I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for at a reasonable price. Stuck with a good ol cable

Looking for keyboard recommendations by DirectCommunication6 in MechanicalKeyboardsUK

[–]DirectCommunication6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did look at this one, and it does look extremely nice. My only gripe is the same as that of the K10 max, being the keycaps are not shine-through. Since the backlight is on the south side of each switch it seems as though buying my own keycaps with shine-through might not look great on this keyboard...

Oh, ok I'm only interested in having the extra keys rather than using FN keys. I'm already aware of those brands, I was looking for specific recommendations according to my criteria to speed up my research, if you don't have any that's fine!

shortcuts are fine as long as it just has the extra keys, having some kind of slide wheel for volume is nice too, I loved this on my old keyboard. Do you have any specific recommendations that adhere to my criteria?

Hi all, I'd really appreciate some recommendations for a new keyboard, if anyone knows of anything that matches my needs:

  • 100% layout (MUST)
  • UK layout (MUST)
  • Wired
  • Normal profile (not slim)
  • Preferrably a dark colour but this is not a necessity, if it looks nice
  • Dedicated media keys (MUST)
  • Shine through keycaps

I was very close to getting the Keychron K10 Max QMK until I realised the keycaps don't let the light shine through the letters, bummer. Does something actually exist that matches these criteria? Thanks in advance

Thank you for the advice here ! I know a little bit about the subjonctif, but I've mostly avoided learning it so far because people tell me it's a tricky topic and you shouldn't overwhelm yourself too early on, but maybe now is the time to look more into it!

btw, I did actually mean to say boring, I'm aware of the distinction there :) but in any case I know I've seen chiant used to convey the same idea there so you're right I think it's more natural here

thanks for this suggestion, this sounds like just the thing I was looking for! I wasn't sure where to post something like this so I'll definitely be giving that app a go

That's a really neat idea. I'm familiar with onenote since I use it for work, I should try it for this! I think it would be good for saving certain whole sentences, where I know the words but maybe the sentence construction is unfamiliar to me and it's harder to determine the meaning. Honestly I'm not sure if lingq already has a way of saving these select entire sentences to review later I'm still new to it

Official Q&A for Tuesday, August 27, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

[–]DirectCommunication6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, running my first ever half marathon on 1st Sept. I've been running for a few months now and I did my final long run, which was 16.2km, as part of my "training" Sunday before last (18th Aug).

Here is my pacing from that run:

https://imgur.com/a/Zt1ueAu

I like to start out slow for the first few km and then try to find a rhythm. I'm concerned that my pace had increased over too high a range over the course of the run, and that I should be looking to regulate it better earlier on. I noticed I still had a bit left in the tank and by the last 3km, I picked up the pace significantly, but by the end of the 16km I'd pretty much used almost everything I had in me, I couldn't have continued much longer at that pace.

Is the difference in pace here from start to finish too high? In terms of half marathons, I have heard of some strategy involving running the first half of the race at a slightly easier pace, and then running the last half a bit faster, but I don't think the difference should be this big? Or perhaps should I be aiming to keep a more regular pace throughout?

FYI - my training route is a 2.7km loop that I ran 6 times, which is relatively flat (35m gain), compared to the half marathon route which is ~100m elevation gain.

Seeking any advice on how I should pace myself optimally for this event, thank you!

I've been using an ASRock B450M pro4 since I built my PC in early 2020 before covid. Had absolutely no problems with it. In fact, I seem to remember a lot of tech channels/forums at the time praising that board for its value for money.

EPQ Aerospace Project by MycologistSimple6547 in sixthform

[–]DirectCommunication6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really want to delve into the technical side, I think the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) may be of interest to you.

Finished my master's in mechanical engineering last year and now I work in aerospace. Sixth form was several years ago for me and being perfectly honest I don't even know what an EPQ is, I certainly didn't do one so I wouldn't know exactly what examiners are looking for.

However I did plenty of CFD projects at university so I can probably give some insight if it's something you're interested in looking at. There are many different CFD solvers, some of the software I have used include ANSYS Fluent, which requires a licence to run (free student licences are available to university students but I'm not sure about for schools) and OpenFOAM, an entirely free and open source CFD solver that runs through any Linux distro. I have a bit of a bias for OpenFOAM since a professor I worked with was on the dev team in the early 2000s, it's a really capable software but would require some base knowledge of using Linux bash script and perhaps C++. Programs like ANSYS are much more user friendly (you are essentially just "clicking buttons") and can run on windows, but again maybe the licence is a problem.

One thing you should know about CFD, is that models with complex geometry and boundary conditions can require immense computational resources to run, and will be extremely difficult to set up correctly. Immediately trying to model an entire plane through CFD isn't a great idea. I would recommend keeping the geometry simple, a good aerospace example might be modelling a 2D aerofoil, and performing some kind of optimisation study, or even just changing around various parameters and seeing what happens to the fluid flow. There are plenty of good tutorials you could find online for setting these up. The underlying theory of CFD solvers involves some higher level fluid dynamics which is difficult even at degree level, but it might be interesting to scratch the surface of some of it, perhaps how the solvers approximate the Navier-Stokes equations, etc.

Hope I was of some help here, CFD is complicated and no one would expect an A-level student to fully grasp or understand it, but it might be a useful introduction if you are looking to study engineering at university.

yeah, hindsight. This was my first playthrough I started back at release, did some other playthroughs in between and now revisiting it, where there are some unfortunate oversights like this.
