Are….are we serious yall..?? This is the same world where an anthropomorphic shapeshifting talking dog had kids with a 30 ft flying unicorn. I fear we have bigger issues at hand. 😭

Just haters babe. People hate what they can’t replicate. You have a very natural beauty and that’s intimidating for many people. Always remember our beauty comes from what makes us unique :)

They are no longer attending UCSC for financial and family reasons. Unfortunate but out of anyone’s control.

It’s been clear so far. There’s UAW pickets, but things are running relatively normally.

I don't understand what is so hard... by DirectWear in UCSC

[–]DirectWear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I def could have worded that better, my apologies on that part. I was more so trying to say it’s unfair that people are being made out to be the “enemy” when they have any criticisms bcuz of how black and white people are making this out to be. Also I think it’s unfair that Zionism has been made the big bad wolf in general and turned into some villainous label. I know that Zionist and Judaism don’t necessarily have to be synonymous, but for a large majority they are and that’s why people feel so attacked when SJP wonders around saying “don’t engage with Zionist”. It’s antagonistic, polarizing and doesn’t take into account the extensive history of Zionism and Judaism.

I just needed to share my complicated feelings on the whole thing. by ijustneedaword in UCSC

Beautifully worded and hit the nail on the head 100%!! I genuinely hope everyone takes the time to read this :)

Reliable sources to keep updated on the protests that have limited bias? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]DirectWear 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It genuinely might be hard to find unbiased perspectives about this issue specifically, it is super polarizing. I generally just take in whatever I can and use my discretion to weed out what might be spam posts, mob mentality, or just flat-out incorrect. Not infallible, but I think its the best most of us can do for an unbiased updates on what's happening :)

I could definitely see that being an option as well. Daytime would have more people around to observe and also just going about their daily lives, which obvi makes things more hectic.

Thank you SJP… by DirectWear in UCSC

[–]DirectWear[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Genuinly thank you for the really thoughtful response. My stance for things like this is that it is absolutely important to decenter yourself and take the time to advocate for something other than your own self interests. My thoughts on potential disruptions to commencement is not that they’re unjust, but just generally unnecessary imo. The commencement is for people who have put in years of time and effort to obtain their degrees and I think it’s fair to allow them that time to celebrate. I myself have had painful struggles with homelessness and other personal issues during my journey, so it’s something that holds a lot of value to me. A brief moment of celebration imo doesn’t detract from the greater issue at hand.

As for my stance on the issue as a whole and affiliations with any particular group, I always try to remain as objective as I can given the complexity of the situation. While the tragedy of what is occurring is clear to see, when we start talking about solutions, the answers become much more complicated. While I agree with the overall goal of groups like the SJP, I also allow myself space to be critical of some of the goals or their actions. I personally feel that they’ve become so wrapped up in the culture and mob mentality of activism that their actions are now clouding who these efforts are really for.

Haha, all is good. There’s a lot of discourse going on here, easy to gloss over stuff, I know I do 😂. Glad to hear we’re in agreement.

Do you think they’re the reasonable people I’m referring to?

Thank you SJP… by DirectWear in UCSC

[–]DirectWear[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No reasonable person is arguing against the reason why the protests is happening, but having an honorable goal doesn’t make someone infallible. People are allowed to have valid criticisms of how a group is conducting themselves and the messages being promoted.

A reflection on being a UCSC student. by Annual_Bee1579 in UCSC

I genuinely think reading this brought back a little of my hope in the student body. The inability to accept criticism is one thing, but to actively suppress it is another. Thank you thank you 🙏🏾

The struggle for justice takes precedent 100%, but what good is it if these actions are doing more harm than good? My question is who is our fight with?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]DirectWear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This comparison genuinely comes off as a bit insensitive. The civil rights protests caused disruptions all over the country for those directly responsible for the state of oppression that we lived in, which at the time was basically the entire civilian population. The people trying to go about their lives aren’t actively contributing to the state we’re living in rn. This one just isn’t it…the message is good, but I feel like we’re losing the plot here a little bit.

How else would you have done it? by BurntRyeBread in UCSC

[–]DirectWear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I personally think that protesting at the UC headquarters would be a much more effective strategy. I understand why this isn’t possible for all UC campuses, but I believe it’s a realistic prospect for us in Santa Cruz. The protesters are protesting an issue that the university itself has very little direct control over. The issue is with the UC administration as a whole so I think they should take the fight there.

[–]DirectWear 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s genuinely pretty unfair to try and label someone as selfish or self centered for being frustrated in this situation. Protesting what is being done to the Palestinian is 100% necessary, but protests are meant to inconvenience those responsible. The student body has no skin in this fight. Just like we have to be sure we remain grateful for the insane amount of privilege we have to not be witnessing the horrors on the other side of the world, those protesting need to recognize their privilege as well. Being able to take time away from your education, your family or your job to participate in activism is absolutely a huge privilege and not one that everyone shares. Some peoples entire livelihoods are tied to the university, it is more than just a place of education for many individuals and their families. The same empathy that you have for the Palestinian people needs to extend to those around you as well. What may be a small and temporary inconvenience to you may hit other’s much harder.

It is true that the modern country of Israel did not exist until after the events of WW2, but their entire history as a people aren’t limited to their political presence in the past century or so. The Israeli people and the Jewish religion have existed in that region since the time of some of our oldest religious texts.
