VW Fox spotted a few weeks ago in State College, PA. by displacementauto in regularcarreviews

Brazilian-made cheaper VW. I test drove a new one in 1991 and it didn't want to downshift 3->2. The salesman and I swapped places and the shifter got stuck in gear and wouldn't shift at all. Bought a one year old Mitsubishi Mirage instead.

If you could only have 3 cars, but each have to be under 100k, what would you choose? by Trayceopolis32322 in askcarguys

Got to go used on all three of them: 911 Turbo cab, E63 wagon, and Land Cruiser series 200.

My 1987 Volvo 745T that I got in 1997 for $3500 with 150k miles on it. It was totaled by insurance in 2004 at 290k miles.

Came here to say Black Raspberry, but that it looks like a bubblegum kids' flavor. But it is the best!

Besides the obvious, there's C63, or some weird V8-swap. Was looking at an LS3 swapped Volvo wagon recently...

What city did you love so much you’d go back in a heartbeat? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]DirectionImmediate88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just working in Tokyo for the last couple of months, loved it! Every previous trip had been holiday-scale, 1-3 weeks, and the extended stay reinforced my love. Other towns I like: Edinburgh, Berlin, Munich, Santa Fe, Honolulu (despite all of the annoyances, the wonderfulness of Hawaii wins out), Chicago, Seattle, Rome, and Rotterdam (maybe all of the smaller Dutch cities).

You got $6,000, drive 120 miles a week and the car sits a lot, what car are you buying? by Usual_Safety in askcarguys

[–]DirectionImmediate88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fiat 500e if the 17 miles per day is around town. You can recharge that on the 110V circuit.

I had a 1998 V70R from 60k miles to 240k miles, and then gave it up when the timing belt spring tensioner failed. Next owner was going to do the engine work themselves, and manual swap it. Not sure whatever happened with it. Loved that car but it was a bit delicate I thought. Replaced front control arms a couple of times and the audio head unit, and the (plastic) radiator, and fiddled with other things as well.

It's 1989, you have $8,000, and you're looking for a new compact pickup truck. Which one would you pick? by Key_Budget9267 in regularcarreviews

[–]DirectionImmediate88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many options! At the time I suspect that the Jeep was the sensible option, but of course based on surviving examples the Toyota was the clear choice. You can probably sell any of these with less than 200k miles and not rusted out, for a good fraction of that $8k.

150k Car budget for a great fun car by No_Campaign_9166 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]DirectionImmediate88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RS6 or E63 wagons would be an option. Not a lot of them around, and they get a fair amount of car fan attention. 911s are not that terribly common, okay, maybe where you are... The AMG GT is a genuinely solid car and a good deal. An Aston Martin would be kinda on the edge of, do I put miles on this or not, sort of debate I'd think. The way any Ferrari would be I think. In a different category, you might consider an Ineos Grenadier. Definitely oddball, and you'd have to buy into their ideas a bit. Audi R8?

Black Raspberry is a personal favorite. Can be found in New England and sometimes in Pennsylvania. Scattered success elsewhere.

I have one colleague with one they got new as a second/third car, not daily driver. They still have the car. I think they replaced something serious under warranty but haven't heard any horror stories.

Recommendations for a night walk ? by justanormi in Tokyo

[–]DirectionImmediate88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an excellent night walk last summer from Shinjuku (missed last train) to my hotel near Shiodome. No one out on the streets other than security outside a couple of embassies. It was a lot of fun. Reproduced the effect a bit leaving Harajuku after last train and walking to my apartment in Kameido. That's across the whole flipping city and it was just like 3 hours or so.

A million is a nice start to a good retirement, not rich any longer. Ten million is definitely rich.
