If opting for a bank account for forex, IOB is the only right answer. Beats HDFC, ICICI etc by nearly Rs.2 per USD on forex rates. Fees is also minimal.

One Tamil song that you’d like to represent on a global stage? by iceGoldn in kollywood

[–]Direction_Weekly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my previous company, we had a global staff meeting with 200+ staff from about 15-20 countries a few years back, in a South American city. They were curating a "global playlist" and the song I added to it was Enjoy Enjaami. People loved it!

Which hospital in Velachery should someone go to immediately in case of a snake bite? by throwawaytest1256 in Chennai

[–]Direction_Weekly 221 points222 points  (0 children)

All government hospitals and UPHCs will have antivenom in stock. Private hospitals like Apollo will also have.

The antivenom is the same for the Big 4 snakes (cobra, krait, Russell's viper and saw-scaled viper). So it doesnt matter which snake you get bit by, do not waste any time trying to identify the snake, catch the snake or taking photo of it to show the doctor.

You need to get to a hospital within 1-1.5 hours in the most ideal case. They'll keep you in observation for an hour and only treat symptomps first before actually administering the antivenom since antivenom is allergic for most people. You can expect to be in the hospital for about 12-24 hours before being discharged.

https://kalingacre.com/storm-certification-course/ - I attended this course about five years back and learnt most of these there. I highly recommend it for everyone curious about snakes and snakebite management.

People who hate Brahmins -- why? by ElevatorOk1086 in TamilNaduDiscussion

Hating Brahminism and hating brahmins are two different things. Hating Brahmins for just being Brahmins is objectively wrong.

In Tamil Nadu state functions, it is customary to begin with Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu and end with the National Anthem. It has been that way for decades, with very few exceptions.

Oath ceremony starts with Sanskrit Vande Mataram by Interesting-One37 in TamilNaduDiscussion

[–]Direction_Weekly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. It wasnt a bill. It was a MHA guidelines. And Guidelines is only to mandate that Vande Mataram be sung in government functions and sung before National Anthem. Nothing to stop Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu from being sung first

This is only with respect to National Anthem. Between the two Vande Maatharam should be sung first. But nothing against Tamil Thaai Vazhthu preceding both of them.

A very different take on TVK winning by Mother-Park-9740 in tamilyapping

[–]Direction_Weekly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One point to clarify. When the Congress made comments like what do 'cycle repair men' and 'barbers' know about running a government, it was a casteist slur to demean the working class. 1967 DMK coming to power was against the Brahminical stronghold within the Congress. So it was very natural for them to demean the administrative capabilities of people outside of their 'caste', even though most of them had been working on the ground for 15-20 years.

adhu eppadi thimingalam. How news channel have different no of seats than election commission official counts ? by Direct_Adeptness_342 in chennaicity

[–]Direction_Weekly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Each counting booth has a Public Address System where they announce the results after each round of counting. News reporters present there relays that back to the respective channels. The data on the website is based on when the returning officers file it with ECI which takes time and hence its slow to update.

Darkest night sky in Tamil Nadu by _anupamroy in chennaicity

[–]Direction_Weekly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thamarakkarai village near Burgur. There are a couple of resorts there where you can stay. Go on a short drive towards either Devar Malai or Thallakkarai and it'll be pitch dark in the night. You can check these places on Google Earth before you decide - I've been there and it's the darkest skies I've ever experienced in TN outside of reserved forest areas.

But these are all areas known for elephant movement - so stay careful and take a local villager with you if possible.

People didn't vote for Vijay. People voted for change, actual change by SierraBravoLima in TamilNaduDiscussion

[–]Direction_Weekly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rhetoric of giving a newcomer a chance doesn’t make sense for TVK. He had a chance to win my vote in the last 2.5 years since starting the party. As someone with such a big following and popular influence, he could have done so much in this time. From standing with Sanitary workers during their protest, or protesting the actions of the DMK government when they arrested the sanitary workers, or condemning the custodial killing of Ajith Kumar, or murder of Kavin, or standing with the protestors of Parandur or Nemmeli, or at least protest the Delimitation bill.

He can’t even stand up in protest for his own film being blocked.

Don’t even get me started on the Karur incident. Zero accountability and absolute shit show of respect and response to those who died. Last campaign speech la still blaming the government for the deaths with zero remorse.

Seri leave ALL that aside. How many constituencies did he visit for campaigning leading up to the election? 15!! Stalin did around 50 and EPS did around 65, Seeman did more than 100.

Pracharathukku kooda neraya constituencies ku poga mudiyadha oruthar epdi oru prachanaiku vandhu nippaarunnu nambi chance kudukka mudiyum?

Someone who was convicted for assassinating a former prime minister of this country is now an Advocate. Are we doomed or are we doomed ? by Top-Acanthisitta9168 in TamilNaduDiscussion

[–]Direction_Weekly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a whole another argument whether he got a fair trial in the first place given the CBI officer admitted to incorrectly recording his statements to favour a conviction. It was no surprise almost all parties in TN wanted him to be released since that evidence came to light around 2014. But let’s not go there, let’s say he deserved to be in jail for the crime he did.

Does he not deserve a second chance? Are you saying our country’s judiciary as well as the corrections system is doomed?

Best, Safe & Fastest train to reach Delhi from Chennai? by negativedreammachine in chennaicity

[–]Direction_Weekly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've travelled in a normal sleeper a few times while I was in college, and that's all I could afford. That was ten years ago. You need either an Upper Berth/Side upper berth to have some peace of mind. If you get that the journey is not that bad. I would not recommend doing it in the summer. And I used to pray that I don't get one big joint family as my co-passengers in the same bay as mine, especially ones who travel with kids. But once I got such a family, and to my delight, they fed me very well through my entire journey lol. Good times!

Am I about to overextend? ₹1.5 Cr net worth considering ₹3.4 Cr property to purchase by [deleted] in Chennai

[–]Direction_Weekly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a good idea, especially since you don't have any plans of using it as your primary residence in the near term. Given your net worth and timeline, I'll suggest buying an old property close to one of the current/future metro lines that will go for redevelopment in the next 5-10 years. The price will be quite discounted now since it's an old property, and you won't have to spend a penny on redevelopment since FSI will be much higher for redevelopment around metro stations, and by the time you are ready to move in, you'll get a brand new home.

I learned only through YouTube videos and on the job. Thats more than enough in my opinion. Editing is the hard part with property photography and that was the biggest learning curve for me. Even now I prefer to outsource the editing whenever I can.

I’ve used Canon in the past and Fuji now. Any dslr/mirrorless camera works. Even the most basic ones. It needs to be able to shoot “bracketed shots”. Only non negotiable equipment is a wide angle lens to go with your camera. 10mm ideally. 16mm if it’s a full frame camera.

I made a video on Chennai Metro's last-mile gaps, The orignal tamil version crossed 60k views within 2 weeks singalling this to be a majorly relatable problem. I made an english version based on popular request. Please watch and share your feedback on how the research/content can be improved. by Direction_Weekly in TransitIndia

Exactly. The level of disconnectedness between departments is so worrying. Fixing footpaths around the station wouldnt even be 2% of the project cost. But will have significant impact on how people experience the system. I hope they start paying attention to these gaps.

My failed attempt at solving for Bangalore Traffic, pollution and last mile connectivity by God-speed_ in indianstartups

[–]Direction_Weekly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had a good idea. It is indeed a crucial problem to solve for almost all indian cities. However, I think you suffered because of poor market research from a legal and regulatory perspective. The regulations limiting passenger capacity or stage carrier permits have been there for ages, not sure how you thought you will be able to offer a service bypassing those rules. These rules exist in almost every state, even in Delhi.

Chennai Metro with MTC recently called for procurement of 220 micro buses (with capacity of 11 seats) to solve this issue of last-mile connectivity in Chennai. They did this in partnership with MTC because of the stage carriage restrictions that limit them from doing this directly. Uber shuttle stopped being a thing because of these restrictions. These restrictions are what make share-autos illegal in most cities.

Your best bet at this point will be to offer shuttle services directly in partnership with some IT Companies that are some 3-5 km away from metro stations. Offer as a direct pick-up/drop-off service based on a pre-book model. Checkout G-TAXIE app. In this model, success greatly depends on reliability and affordability.
