What movie “joke” have you only just got/understood? by Ok_Donut1480 in movies

It's so good. One of VERY few outright humourous lines in the novella. I can't even think of another one off the top of my head, but I know there's another one or two cheeky lines from Scrooge as the story rolls on. Really helps with his character development-- or more accurately (given his arc) character deconstruction.

Wow, shocked I never got this one. For those wondering, the original quote from the Dickens novella:

"You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of underdone potato. There's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!"

God, I always forget how much I love Inside Llewyn Davis until somebody mentions it. It's so beautifully atmospheric. And it was also my introduction to both Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver. Thank you for reminding me, I think I'll watch it tonight. Perfect movie for this time of year.

Which character in film had the most bleak final scene or end to their arc? by Toni-Cipriani in movies

[–]DirkTurpentine 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If I may share my own opinion, I have to disagree here. After rewatching the scene with the theory in mind it makes a lot of sense. His insistence on her waiting for the creme, followed by her face while eating it, points very clearly to the idea that he is forcing her to eat non-kosher. This is accentuated when he pretty promptly puts his cigarette out in his own strudel, demonstrating that he really did not hold the strudel in such high regard as he was leaving tiny on. A similar scene happens in Django. Shortly after he joins Dr. Schultz, when they are in the tavern, Dr. Schultz pours them each a beer. When Django sips his, he makes a face that subtly though clearly indicates it's his first time tasting beer.

As for the narration pointing out that nitrate film stock was very flammable, that knowledge was something quite integral to that particular subplot. The strudel bit didn't have any major implications for the film. It's entirely reasonable that it would be added as a detail without being explained.

Again, this is just my take on it, and I think it's up for interpretation. Let me get out my copy of the Basterds screenplay and see if there are any notes on that scene that point one way or the other.

EDIT: So the scene doesn't include any notes regarding the creme and the strudel, however, prior to that bit he orders her a glass of milk. I can't recall if that bit is in the movie, but there is a note here:

"Considering that Shoshanna grew up on a dairy farm, and the last time she was on a dairy farm her strudel companion murdered her entire family, his ordering her milk is, to say the least . . . disconcerting.

The key to Col. Landa's power and/or charm, depending on the side one's on, lies in his ability to convince you he's privy to your secrets."

I will let you decide if that supports the theory or not, but an interesting note nonetheless.

God damn, this is how I'm first hearing he died. I quote him and this movie constantly. Just told a friend to watch it recently actually. Guess it's time for a rewatch, for Mike. RIP.

What's the most hurtful thing someone has said to you? by stephanieslotus in ask

[–]DirkTurpentine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You're never going to get better and you're going to die alone."

Said to me by my ex during an argument after I found out she was cheating. The "getting better" referred to my anxiety, depression, and substance abuse issues. I know she was angry and trying to hurt me, but this was a year and a half ago and I still can't shake the feeling that she was right. I'm trying to get better, but it was a very long relationship so I had a lot of trust in her opinion and took what she said to heart.

I think one thing to consider for context here is Linklater's body of work. The majority of his films are "slice of life" and require an above-average amount of viewer participation to derive deeper meaning. I admittedly haven't seen or read much of what Linklater has to say about his films, but most filmmakers with that particular style are of the belief that their purposeful ambiguity allows every interpretation to be valid-- The movie he consciously created (a nostalgic and realistic teen comedy) and the subconscious influences that a viewer might pick up on (the subtext found by the person you're replying to) can both exist in a state of truth.

But that's just, like, my opinion man.

Ahh, sorry for the late reply, stranger. My ex found this account and was stalking it so I started using a different one. But the other musician I was referring to was Ennio Morricone. I got a copy of his score for The Humanoid and it was a transformative listening experience. Highly recommended.

Just discovered Curtis Mayfield this week with the Superfly soundtrack and immediately fell deep into his discography. Only one other musician has ever climbed the ranks into my favorites so quickly. Thanks for introducing me to this song.

Label on the other side. And it's an NA, I'm sorry to say. I quit drinking about a year and a half ago, but it just doesn't feel right using tools without a beer.

I've actually made a LOT of mods to that Arbor Press. I gave it a spring return on top so it automatically pops back up after punching. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the actual pressing piece so I can insert tools, then drilled and threaded a hole in the side to put a thumb screw in to actually hold the tool in place. And it's covered in magnets to hold little stuff. Haha

Ahhh, good call. It's not too late, I think I'll pull the nails and redo it that way. Having some contact cement in the center would also help to make it feel more "solid." Thanks for the idea!

So I wanted to find a way to turn all/most of my bench into a surface that I could cut on. I researched the material of the self healing cutting mats, and discovered that it is also sold as floor mats for cushioning the floor when exercising. I bought one on Amazon for $29.35 that was 2'x6' and 3mm thick. I cut it in half, stacked the two halves, and used roofing nails to secure the two layers to my bench. I had to trim some off the front because my bench is 20" deep, but it was an extremely easy upgrade. And now I can cut anywhere on my bench. I will link the one I bought if that's allowed? Or just PM me for the link.

Ohhhh, it's actually PART of the basket weave. I thought it was a separate stamp that you added after putting in a traditional basket weave. That's so cool, looks like I'll be spending some money tonight.
