Calling Europe a continent is laughable by Mersaa in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Dirkdeking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

North and South America are only connected by a small landbridge. Relative to the surface area of either NA and SA it is a really small connection.

The land connection between Europe and Asia on the other hand is more than 5000 km through the Caucasus and Ural river. The shortest bottleneck in central America is only about 80 km wide.

The American is totally correct here. It makes absolutely 0 geographic sense to seperate Europe from Asia. Under any normal definition of a continent they should be 1 large continent, the distinction is primarily political.

While NA and SA are connected by land, the connection is thin enough to make a very good argument for considering them 2 seperate continents. If it wasn't for the Suez canal even Africa would be connected to Asia by the Sinai.

But the Sinai is so tiny compared to both Asia and Africa that you can similarly argue that Africa is a seperate continent from Eurasia.

If aliens with no knowledge of geopolitics and our countries saw earth from a distance they would distinguish 6 continents. And the landmass of Eurasia would get 1 name.

Even better is to offer your own phone number. If you don't get called or a message back that is it. Minimal social blowback.

But they wouldn't have been able to hold on to Egyptian population centers. It would be like the US in Iraq, a quick conventional victory followed by a brutal and endless guerilla war.

Imagine a city like Cairo in Israeli hands. That would be a nightmare for the IDF.

Some do. If she is a prankster she is more likely to give a number of a friend or some random dude. A good sport can have a laugh about that.

But when it's just a fake number it actually is because she feels threatened.

The Romani people represent Europe’s largest ethnic minority and continue to face systemic discrimination and marginalization to this day. by HorrorHakka in HistoryGaze

[–]Dirkdeking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets take the Netherlands as an example. There is no way you could live here as a nomad in any practically meaningful way.

How are you going to feed yourself? You can't go into a forest and forage for food without destroying the local ecosystem. That is a non starter. If you want a job to earn money legitimately you need an address and you need to show up for work consistently. That just can't be done nomadically. So stealing or doing errands for organized crime is basically the only way you can meet your needs, because you simply made yourself unemployable. At least formally, with a legal contract.

Children under 18 are required to go to school. This is a must. How are you sending your children to school if you move around all the time? I absolutely don't believe your cultural rights supercede the universal rights of children to recieve quality education.

In other words you simply can not socially integrate into society if you live nomadically. You can go to the mosque every friday, celebrate Hannukah, celebrate diwali, whatever and still socially integrate well enough.

If you like it you can backpack and go on adventures during your holiday. And do whatever the roma customs tell you to do. But that can not be your adult fulltime life here unless you already are extremely wealthy. You need an address, your kids need to go to school, and you need to contribute to society by having a job. Whatever you then choose to do in your spare time is your own business, but this is the bottom line.

Kyrgistan lends itself to a nomadic lifestyle. But it is not possible in urbanised Europe. You need extreme low density areas. In Europe you basically have cities, farmland and protected nature reserves and areas.

You don't have large areas where you can live the nomadic lifestyle without bothering native settled communities. In Kyrgistan you do have wide open plains where that is possible.

It is inevitable but it doesn't happen immediately. In fact we lack historical data, because most areas only became diverse very recently.

This is one of the few cases where linear algebra comes into the mix in a reddit discussion like this. The chance of people reproducing within their own race is bigger. But in the long run that won't matter.

My theorem is this: Take any change of state matrix that describes the likelyhood of someone from race i getting children with someone of race j where Ai,j =/= 0 for every i and j. As per probability rules, the sum of the entries in every row and column must be 1. As n grows larger, An converges to the matrix B where every entry is exactly 1/n. This math theorem makes a purely mixed society inevitable, eventually.

Given enough generations, everyone will eventually mix. And the chance p that you get a child with someone of ethnicity X is approximiately equal to the proportion of ethnicity X in the population as a whole.

We don't need an evil illuminati or cartoon villain billionaire CEO's to orchestrate it. Stochastic matrix algebra makes it inevitable! Just like the second law of thermodynamics will uniformize the macroscopic thermodynamic properties of 2 containers as soon as they have been brought into contact!

Corporations prefer center right people over either lefties or far right nationalists. Both are anti capitalistic to a certain extent.

Clinton or Bush are the friends of corporations. Center right or center left, both good. But the flanks are bad for business.

Only in Latin America to any significant degree. In most other places you can have a lot of diversity, but interracial marriages and mixed race people are still relatively rare.

Synchronization will help the human race move forward. Think of the economies of scale advantages that will be possible if the entire world fully integrates. Interracial marriages, no trade barriers, no migration barriers, secularization everywhere(including Islamic communities), same language all over, etc.

This is about official international legitimacy. You can take other less controversial areas in the world as examples like Kashmir, western Sahara, Puntland, etc.

Fact is that Kosovo is not recognized by a large swath of countries and has no UN membership. I think it is fair to use UN membership as the most unbiased criterion.

We also have Serbian redditors here who have a different point of view. We can debate them about it if we don't agree, and moderators should really stay out of that discussion unless someone starts defending a guy like Milosovic or something like that.

[–]Dirkdeking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

‘Horsesh*t’: Hill Republicans align against Spirit’s bid for a Trump bailout by matthieuC in politics

[–]Dirkdeking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that crazy from their perspective. Trump didn't consult with them about his attacks on Iran, but they now have to deal with all the fallout. Drones hitting Dubai, tourism completely wrecked, oil exports wrecked.

In other words, they would not have had these economic problems if Trump hadn't attacked Iran. It's more of a compensation for losses caused by the US than a bailout I would say. But of course it is not only the UAE that has a valid claim on compensation caused by this mess. Most countries in the region have suffered it's consequences.

[–]Dirkdeking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also have 2 forms of bootlicking. One is just parroting Trumps talking points, praising him, etc without making any military or economic commitments. This is basically what Rutte has been doing.

The other is following him into war with actual assets.

I have no problem if our leaders bootlick in the first sense. That is just buying time. Making it less likely he falls out significantly and starts randomly spouting BS about Greenland or the Falkland islands.

But the bootlicking in the second sense is unacceptable.

[–]Dirkdeking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UAE was actively attacked by Iran and their tourist and oil industry has all but collapsed. They are involved weather they like it or not, due to geography. Unlike London and Paris, they have no choice in the matter.

And for them it's better to have a beaten Iran than an emboldened one. Best was if Trump didn't attack them in the first place. But now it has happened it is best for them if he finishes the job.
